But compression would remove detail, not add any, no? The added white pixels just forces the file to store more data. Never really seen this happen as a result of compression at all, and discord doesn’t actually compress images (unless you sent it from your phone and it was automatically compressed. I also think it’s lossless compression, not lossy).

Compressed images are often more smooth, not grainy. Film grain naturally happens when you take photos regardless of the camera you use - it depends on how the camera samples the shot I think. Grains especially come in darker shots/scenes where there’s not enough light. A lot of people artificially add grain though to make their smooth pictures/renders look more authentic

I still like the film grain here though - gives it a lovely look! I’ve started adding grain into my renders to make them look better.

If anyone is confused as to why the grain flickers as you zoom into and out of the image, it’s because as the image is downscaled to fit the zoom level you have (normally when zoomed out), not all the grains are kept, and the same grains are not kept as the image gets downscaled while you change the zoom. This inconsistency causes the flickering.

When viewing the same picture on my end (on discord) it looks completely fine without any white pixels at all
Maybe it's discord's image processing rather than compression

Because that would explain the decrease in file size - since the file was too big the phone itself compressed the image, not discord
