Today's fun fact:
In the 19th century, the British government mandated that relief could not be "free," and that conditions in workhouses had to be worse than conditions available outside so that there was a deterrence to claiming poor relief. To receive food or a pittance of wages, starving people were forced to build stone roads in remote rural areas where no transportation was needed. These are still visible in Ireland today and are known as "Famine Roads."
