Oh okay
i find A level Sciences intersting
Then what do u wanna be
and i would luv to learn it in depth
Whereas an engg degree is easy to acquire these days, and you'll probably end up in a slightly different field than you started out with
@slow widget that's 2 extrem different courses
Not necessarily
Not necessarily that every business man needs an accountant
Tbh I'm in a similar situation at home
Because with CA comes money
yes
CA offers good money
but im more inclined towards sciences
but when i say this
to my dad
he traps me saying
its been 15 yrs and u havent scored an A since
yupp
sad life
im too distracted
but its some point in life u realise u gotta bulk up
CA is probably not a good choice then
yea coz it requires consistency
but it has its benefits
i wanna explore the earth and throught
the galaxy and stuff
i dont wanna freaking account
shit
doing the same dulll task over and over again
i might invent something in the future inshallah
Point
sciences is an explanding stream isnt it?
okay so taking science doesn't always mean engineering. you could also venture into research. and if you're more inclined towards sciences and enjoy them more than commerce, maybe talk to him? about how you're into sciences and not CA.
unless of course you're also interested in dabbling around in CA because the pay is good, maybe look at business sciences? cause it's something that seems to reach into commerce and the sciences.
but he always TRAPS me saying
ive never showed progress for 15 yrs
why would i do now?
Okay, then prove them wrong
how good are you in your sciences rn?
Do it. Put in the effort and show them what you've got.
im keen on learning
i think i could score gr8 if i put in the effort
B
D
at times
without studying
Right
i never review anything when i get back home from school
and i think thats the main setback
plus i study a day beofre test
so i'd need some chnages
changes*
in my life
procrastination and leaving things to the last minute yeah?
indeed
more like not even bothering
but i believe in myself
i got the aptitude for it
Alhumdullillah
that's the spirit man, then go for it
condition is he wont let me take SAT
and if i dont score an A in A2
which may be impossible
as my exams didnt go to well in As
if that's where your passion lies, and you know you can do it if you make some minor changes to your lifestyle, do it !
he'll have my change my field
take the SAT subject tests?
he wont allow me
now
Lets talk life after bachelors of an engineer
employment?
🤔
so his condition is that if you don't score high in A2 exams he's deciding and you're gonna do CA?
because a lot of people get into engineering
plus CA takes less doe
it takes less money to be admitted whereas engineering is rather demanding a hefty fee
the worst part you don't use most of your college skills in real ife
ooof all this sudden change has made me LOST in the midst of time and space
and you're paying 120k
what kind of college skills?
okay but then you risk being stuck in a field that you may not enjoy in your life, no?
ikr
not to mention i wont have to give side subjects for CA
like urdu and islamiat which
that they teach that you might never use/apply in real life
why though
do you have an idea about where you want to do engineering?
@slow widget not exactly
ok
NUST
but the fees is hefty compared to CA
and the worst thing they let failures go thru
to the next semester
but the first year is hell tbh
failures go through?
wdym? like a low gpa you can get in?
thats failure in my dads view
no go thru....
to the next semester
but in some unis they say farewell
and U get booted out
decisive skills
...............................
so even if you score less they'll let you pass to the next sem unlike some unis who yeet you?
okay so is there a chance of getting in?
sure is
or is it really hard?
its not hard if your a good student
the difficulty varies for the type of student
its fair
tbh
but the fees
its alll about the feees
CA has its pros
scholarships? fee waivers?
only for folks from rurals areas i suppose
not even fee waivers?
who need financial assistance
you can apply for it right, if the fees are too high?
Nah man, most of us are above the financial assistance bracket
Although we could definitely use it
theres a criteria
and i dont fulfill it
so no
Education is like business these days
and if you were to do CA? where would you do it?
institutes*
lmao it is a business
ikr
a consultant told me ppl saying that CA is "hard" is just a myth
sciences require more effort compared to CA
he says
GUYS?
what is CA?
but are you willing to put in the effort if you were to pursue science?
@distant nimbus chartered accountancy
i AM
and you know your flaws and where you're going wrong with your study routine, no?
for CA?
yea
then when u get into the job
way more moola to offer
its funny the consultant has totally tried to brainwash me
mentioning setback of taking engineering
thats the most obvious thing a consultant for engineering wo
the consultant pushed you towards CA?
they would side with theur own stream of subject
hes trying to brainwash me
my dad contacted that consultant
lol
but im remain stiff
i*
i agree its the only degree which has 0% unemployment rate
compared to engineering
hes not pushing me though
U can only try to push me but i wont budge
🕵
okay so get that A in A2 Level
put in the hard work and show your dad that you are indeed capable
is it possible toget an A if i get a D in AS?
but you're going to have to make some changes in your lifestyle fosure
resit bro
yes it is. you have the aptitude, like you said, and you have the passion, ofc you can
and you want to do engineering, yeah? what kind though
probabaly somethign concerning earth and space
where these to ideas correlate
when do u get to become manager
im curious
you can do an engineering bachelors and then take up a management course
that will let you go into the more money making side of sciences
granted you wont have much related to engg, but its somewhere
ooh double degrees?
i see.
theres so much to think about
BRAINstoorm
...............................!!!!!!!!!!!!!
\
There isss
yeah there's a lot of factors that come into play, and good luck for that ! hope you end up with what you want
Ameen
hey guys
need some advice
I just finished As level (physics chemistry biology and maths)
and I'm thinking whether or not I should drop biology
I want to do chemistry for undergrat and nutrition for my master, or something along the line
so i dont know if its wise for me to drop biology
because I dont think I will enjoy ecology and stuffs
the only topic I enjoy is biological science
i want my career to do something with food (not chef tho I cant cook lol)
like food sciences?
yeet
Reported for typing
first I planned to do biochemistry but then As hit me and I realized that I don't actually enjoy biology that much
Like u finna go to culinary college or some shit like that or what
Obviously
Guys . Is it worth taking a double degree?
I'm planning to take a double degree for Bachelors of Engineering, and Bachelors of Biomedical Science.
But I was wondering whether that would put too much pressure on my studies, how would I be able to manage my studies?
So would that be an issue for me?
^ I have the same question except Aerospace Engineering and Astrophysics
same with adi
yes
aight
Guys Im interested in the fields of psychology, health, management and mainly environment. I always thought I'd do medicine but I'm more inclined towards the environment; don't think I've the passion to stay committed in medicine.
However I don't know how to find a degree that has a combination of all/most
Medicine is a long stressful journey if one isn't passionate for it
I wouldn't mind doing even a PhD in environmental sciences or related fields as I know I'm interested in it
You could try do double degree
Maybe psychology and environmental sciences
But your workload will be ripperino
in your 2nd year
@spare tulip
Uh huh
Well, from what i've heard(friends)doing engineering itself can be quite tough already. @sour dew if you're wanting to do both Aerospace engineering and astrophysics, the main differences is that one is heavily based on research and the other is related to practical application,do aerospace if your practical knowledge is stronger etc...
I have a friend doing astrophysics at cardiff,he also had to choose between the two.
He chose astrophysics as he wanted to study deeper concepts.
Well one thing I have found is that at the undergrad level astrophysics isn't usually available as a major... So if I were to pick a double it would have to be like aero and just normal physics which keeps my options open in the future...
It's not a good idea a call to do a double major in both considering aero is usually the hardest major out there
I'd say if you can decide between a BSc Physics and aero that would be the big decision you have to make
Many places also offer an MPhys in 4 years, so you can choose your optional modules through the years to lean towards astro
But I found that more places than I expect actually do offer specialisations beyond a BSc Physics at bachelor's, since I've just started uni hunting.. so look up some places where you want to study and you might be surprised
You don't need to select a specific uni, just take anything mid range and look at the courses provided @sour dew
@frank ginkgo I was thinking do medicine; if I turn out having a passion, I specialise , otherwise I get an MBA degree and do business, like fun a hospital, or just become a GP
I was kinda on the same boat, interested in doing banking and finance, wanted to do investment banking...but ultimately I chose to do medicine in the end.
I still try to fulfil the finance part of me as a hobby, investing in some stocks and small start ups, hopefully building upon my portfolio.
I too would like to specialise in the end
@frank ginkgo ikr. i like environment too and would like to do something in that aspect too, and psychology
but there's only so much one can do
why did you choose medicine over investment banking?
Just double major that bitch
must you need SAT to go to US unis
fck
Actually not everywhere, check the CAIE recognitions database to see universities that acknowledge AL
Do ACT instead if u don't like SAT @slate shore
I think @spare tulip would be qualified to answer regarding AS Psychology
@marsh dagger can you tag me on the channel she sent this? I'll respond there
Nvm got it
hi … so i'm in A levels taking Bio , Comp Sci, and Phy …. can anyone tell me all the possible career options with these subjects ?? plz help
Why didnt u take math
i failed twice so im so depressed and broken down by others tht i gave up...
its the first time i failed too
so now i have bio
When to apply to university?
@scarlet pecan you're in AS level rn, no? it would be smart to start researching unis and their requirements. and you'd need your grades to apply as well, unless your uni accepts predicted grades.
it's never too early when it comes to uni stuff, learning what they need and honing your essay writing skills (for your personal statement, or its equivalent)
@scarlet pecan … Its best to start searching now … and start applying for applications before A2 exams so tht u'll know which uni wants wht requirements for entry
Can I apply with my As level grades when I get the results?
I have a question. My school doesn't provide A level Computer Science. If I take A Level Science and other subjects with IGCSE computer science. Do I have a high chance in acceptance or nah? Considering the scores are average
I know it depends on which college i apply at
But still any of y'all know?
Should I maybe do my A level Computer in other school? Like only that subject
u can do private exam but u have to study on ur own mostly
or get tuition for CS a level
which field do u wish u continue in ?
@scarlet pecan some unis allow tht … but mostly required A2 as well ...
search for some in ur country/city tht allow admissions with AS grades
@slow widget I'd say software enigneer
not many school teach u for one subject ….
however if u can give it privately and get tuition classes till then
software engineering need a good grade in comp and maths ...
if ur school isn't good enough for tht specific subject ...get extra tuition classes from academies… dont get urself more strained with having other schools to mix up with ur own progress in ur school
Hello, so basically I finished my AS level but I'm moving to America and will be starting at Junior high.
I don't know what should I do after I graduate. I like both designing and coding. I see both field there's alot for me to learn but combining both will be Web designing, and I don't like to be a web designer. Is there any job or carrer path I could potentially look into?
Or am I just overthinking and panicking
@burnt path Game Design? I know my uni offers a major/minor in that (not sure which)
After IGCSEs you can apply for foundation course-
u can i think in public universities
just go work at starbucks
why is the SAT international curve so damn steep when compared to the USA curve?
i'm just asking out of curiosity, trying to do some of the math on there as i'm a big noob
do u need A levels if ur going to australia or u.s
@slate shore - For the US you need a form of high school education, be it A-Levels or IB.
i thought u need SAT
@slate shore You need the SAT as well. The SAT is an admissions test. It’s not an either or. You need both high school education and the SAT for the US.
That’s of course for most cases, there will always be the exceptions
@cunning snow are you applying for med? if so what were ur ig grades and where r u applying to?
@distant nimbus You looking at U.K. Med school?
She's not applying for med
@toxic python depends on ig grades, hopefully twinning tho 🤞
@distant nimbus I have a friend that didn’t have IG grades. He’s into Imperial for Med School.
HOLY HELL
Don’t freak out about your IG grades. Take them as a learning step, and most importantly, keep improving!
ur friend must be a literal god
He’s human 😂
But damn does he have focus
(Aka he’s a god in my eyes)
If it helps, not to be offensive to him, he hasn’t done anything massively amazing (that I KNOW OF!!)
Nothing out of reach for the majority
@distant nimbus nope, no med for me, im going into chemical engineering probably
Tf
Can you study in Australia with A levels
@crimson willow i am tagging you since you're the only admin with UG who's status is online instead of do not disturb. I will be having foundation lectures is lecture halls with like 100 other classmates. How do I take notes in the best and most efficient manner, while understanding the lecture material? I've not been taught in this style before and I want to be able to survive the first few weeks! Thanks in advance.
How do I get admission to hotel and farm management in areas of severe drought
Very useful majeed
XD
you should head on to #productivity @distant nimbus
@distant nimbus
oh yea i will google it tomorrow, btu for now minecraft calls!
@polar copper what's a cue column ?
idk
It's about memory cues
If were to be studying a story about Nero, let's say
Nero is the protagonist
I'd be able to recall, the story with a little more ease, if I was to relate Nero to the story
So in a way, when I think of Nero, I'd be thinking about the story too
I'd have formed a association between the two in my mind
This is called priming
And Nero would be the cue for the story
well said 👌🏻 @crimson willow
Maybe
Coz some uni sees A level first
Or As or a2 something like that
Idk cambridge programme Xd
@slow widget It’s possible without, but good IGs defo help.
idk where to ask this but
if my A level Subjects r Bio, Phy, Comp Sci … what fields r available to me ?
so sorry if I asked in the wrong place
but I searched so much online .. and I have difficulties trying to reach any unis so plz help
Bsc biology @slow widget
that itself has many fields.. @slow widget …
choosing one of them is the issue ig … since biotechnology needs maths
right?
I'm not talking about biotechnology
I'm talking about Bsc in biology
Only biology
And u can do Bsc in CS
And Bsc in Physics
hmm …
And apart from that
U can do
BA in most of the feilds
And u can also go for BBA
It has maths but it's ez
ok whats BBA
Bachelor in Business Administration
It's toooooooo ez for commerce and science student
Okay
In which field u have interest
Wúť u wanna do
??
i originally loved medical … but parents said no to tht .. choose engineering cuz thts wht the school told me to do … gave up cuz my maths teacher was horrible and was only interested to get info out of me … so now since i loved bio … i think thats wht made me come back to it
Okay
Do u want to become doctor
??
@slow widget
wish i could but parents dont want me too … i think this BSc bio is what i want now
@slow widget
or Phy is fine too
Okay listen
U could be a doctor only if u had chemistry
And u can't be a engineer cuz u don't have maths
This is the reality
Now if you wanna do Bsc biology look forward to it
@slow widget explain ur parents
Bro believe me or not they are ur well wishers
It's just dat they are not secure
Explain them dat ur future is secure
Psychology exists too....
ik ik my parents care for me … and i respect tht decision since i know the reason behind it … but they too r scared of my choices in A levels .. bcuz they think no niversity will accpt me
Hmm
@unborn ether he has no interest in psychology
How can you say that about her
She has great interest in biology
Yeah
And she can speak for herself smh
yes i have CS ...
@slow widget then call up that uni and ask them what requirements they want for you to join
again if i did get allowed to call them … i would had so
but im trying to get someone to go for me there to check things out for me
ah then that's a lot easier
We can do that
We'll try to contact them
U also have the option for kinesiology
oh .. really .. but i couldnt ask u to do tht …. @slow widget since ur yourself a A2 student … u must be bust
Ahem
But I can contact
😁
busy*
thanks
thank u so much … means a lot
kinesiology ?... never heard of it
Please google it
It's little bit complicated
You can always email student ambassadors of unis
They're quite helpful because they're also students and know the struggles
the struggles
...
No thats bucky
He use his gun to shoot enemy
You talking about the pew pew thing right?
Yeah that is him
Yool
Guysss
Most people here are lost
NNot knowing what they want for work right?
NOt just me?
Am I right?
👍
Y tho
y not?
type in google "career quiz"
click on a link that is not shady
do the quiz
ez
Thank you
You gon' let the internet tell you what to job to look for? You seem very lost.
Why does Cambridge take so long to publish the results?.
because they have millions of papers to correct @scarlet pecan
It’s so annoying and stressful
Plus it goes through 5 levels of checking
Alright,good luck.
who has result in a few days? cambridge ka
nobody ...... literally nobody
How to help your child choose a career path?
One of the most common dilemmas that every child faces in life is whether to pursue his or her dreams or fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of their parents?
There comes a direct conflict between what is ethical and what is rational and practical.
Ever since the child is born we teach them to be independent. We tell them to make their own decisions. When it comes to choosing a career, parents become
very authoritative leaving no room for the child to explore his or her aspiration.
Should a parent choose the career for their child?
Parents indeed play a very crucial role in helping to choose a child's career. Their experience and expertise........

Copy paste ^^^^
no one thought u wrote that
Can someone explain this, like I took ESL in IGCSE and going to take IELTS. Is it enough?
@prime raven 7 isn't that hard of a score
AS paper 1?
😂
I'm confused with what exactly you mean
awsdfnasekdfj
Ahhhh
I think it's 3 papers in AS
And 2 in A2
For science subjects I mean
Um
I don't think so
But AS is supposed to make A2 easier
Since AS carries majority of the total marks for A2
Boi if you want A* then don't 😂
Whew
Just
Do AS and A2 separately
Not together
Also AS and A2 has a shorter time than IG
Um
There are a few peeps out there who give them together
Yes I know 😂 😂
But they do exist
Well ok, Paper 1 for science subjects is MCQ
Paper 2 theory
Paper 3 practical
:)
For maths, Paper 1 is Pure maths and paper 6 is stats
😂
BUT PRACTICAL IS BIG FUN
IT REALLY IS
maybe not chem
Chem can be vv tiresome ;-;
Yes
True
Physics is just playing with instruments
Just get the set up right
Then you'll be fine
Ok no that's the worst thing to say
But I'm speaking from my experience
I loved physics practicals
Ah
It does take time to um figure out the scaling
cuz
like
If you get weird values
It won't be easier
In A2
That would be- holy fuck we have 3 more papers left
Paper 4
No wait
It's 2
OML I AM NOT READY FOR A2
Paper 5 is ATP
Yes
I'm not sure how your school works tho
I mean about maths
😂
Cuz in here I've realised some peeps-
Wow
😂 😂 😂
You'll be great
uwu
So I've realised some peeps here did maths p1 with mechanics
Instead of s1
I don't know
It depends on your school system
For me it was doing pure maths and stats in AS
Then mechanics in A2
indeed
Maths and physics in AS was amaze
I mean, i hate those two subjects but I loved how good I was in it
Bio was medium
Cuz I could just list the points in the corner then make a whole essay out of it
As long as you have the pain points you'll get the marks
And there are times where they say to explain the whole process-
NEVER ASSUME AS IS LIKE IG
IT IS NOT
No, not like IG
In that paragraph you have to mention those keywords
In AS we have keywords
for bio i mean
I loved bio tbh
Chem is a whole new universe
I'd rather not talk about it
of course it is
Just make sure you remember the whole
um
organic part
You'll need that shit
Vv important
Yes ;-;;;;
Dis isn't even a thing to talk about-
Sister, time for education to rise
And minecraft to go ||photosynthesise|| itself
Then you shall be banned this time for assuming such things
Such as playing minecraft while studying for AS
uwu
You are failing indeed
Miniclip games still exist-
Time for my childhood to relive
That was my favourite :((((((
yes, sometimes but it depends from univeristy to university
Not sure about the easier part but it is for a year
Like you can skip both AS and A2
That's like the only perk
umm guys i wanna do genetic engineering so can someone pls explain whats required to do and stuff pls
could you be more specific? like where do you want to study, what ALevels are you doing, what universities are u looking at
you will have to take other external exams when applying to america such as the SAT, maybe the ACT and other stuff (ask someone who is more familiar)
your A Levels look fine, just look at standard entry requirements per uni
yeh ik i gotta do sats
in the UK it can range from AAA to BBB i think
oh thanks dude/dudette
@hollow hare look at doing a bachelor's in biotechnology and then specialising in genetic engineering at masters
oh i thought genetic was offered in under grad as well\
If I apply for a visa to the UK to study (Tier 4) from my country of residence (KSA), do I have to fly out of the same country or can I fly out of my home country (India)?
@shadow tree A Visa is bound to your passport instead of your country of residence, so it should probably be fine?
But then again you're applying from KSA?
I could yes, it hasn't been decided, thought it would be easier here cuz it would get processed faster considering there'll be more peeps applying in India
my 3 a level subjects are sciences (compsci, mths, phy) and im rly unsure wht course to take. i want something to do with computer science but i also have an interest in performing arts what should i do
for uni btw
@summer temple But computer science is more useful, no?
You can always learn performing arts yourself
Which one do you have a better foundation on?
that's what i was thinking
i was thinking of mainly comp sci and my acting classes separately
or if possible both of those courses
does anyone know how UCAS works? please dm i have questions. thx 😄
HEY GUYS!
Need SOME major help here!
I got a decent IG Result, and Ik that if i get another try, I can improve it
What I want to know is that if the unis see that I gave a second attempt, and do they get to see my old grade also?
@split leaf the unis will get to see the higher of the two attempts
Like if you do better the first attempt, they'll see that even if you retake
hey guys i'm really interested in computer science but all universities I want to go to require a HL score in maths of 6. the problem is only analysis is opening in my school so I've decided to take SL. is it possible that universities will have leniency when selecting students? i'm taking ITGS HL (which is a mix of computer science and GP) with two sciences. I'm hoping that if i get 6 or 7 for those subjects, unis will let go of the fact that i didn't do HL maths. is this plausible?
AS + A2 = your final grades of A2
Get it?
Technically AS should matter cuz it carries majority of your marks for continuation
sdfjgnksrdfkvnbsdrfkngbdk
AND A2 IS VERY IMP TOO
YES IT IS
DNFVHFNSKVNDND NO YOU
NO I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE GRADES
yeah
no
scoring high in as helps a lot in a2 ;-;
Wait wdym
So I need to put more effort in A2
Because u shat the bed in AS?
Hey guys I need advice, so I have two options for As and Al mixed courses, one is (chemistry, bio, math and English) and the other is (Sociology, psychology, English and maybe thinking skills). The 2nd combination, I'll be tackling mostly at home since I'm planning to just get a private tutor instead of abiding in early school classes. I'm planning to take political science, international studies or law as my undergraduate course, which combination do you think will give me a better backing for my college course?
(I got decent grades for IG, 3 A*, 2A and 2B) so I'm not too worried about that, but I'd like to know an opinion for the 2 AS and AL combinations
Danke!
hi guys
how do i send my cie as level results to us unis?
do i just send the provisional results sheet with my percentage uniform mark and grade?
@everyone anyone knows any good scholarships for studying in canada/ UK?
@devout vector there's always the global excellence scholarships in many of the UK unis
@wind basin you're gonna do 4 AL subjects? Sorry I'm a little confused
Definitely take maths because it'll help you in a majority of fields and widen your options should you change your mind later on, it's always a plus
I did AS psychology and it doesn't exactly help with international studies or political science or anything, however I know (with my limited knowledge) that sociology deals with people and society more compared to psychology.
I don't know about 'thinking skills'
Take English though, you'll definitely have that as a plus too
Hey Guys!
Does anyone know some platform for compiling college applications
Like some platform where I could log my results, any certificates that I got
etc
To log in your results and all that sounds like an application portal.. that would depend on how the applications work in each country
Is it feasible to drop A2 psychology and take AL maths (Edexcel as it's easier) along with continuing to study A2 Bio and physics?
I was thinking I'd go into biomedical engineering and maths is a requirement
Plus I can still do med with maths
And maths opens more options
Just that if I were sure I wanted to do med, id just proceed with the easier route that assures A/A* and continue with Psychology A2
@spare tulip Yeah, do Maths. Not doing maths in year 13 is suicide
yo can someone help me make a decision... dm me, i rather not discuss it in public
it's regarding college obviously
guys is maths compulsory for bio-med engineering? what if we take bio, chem and physics only in A levels??
i think anything with engineering behind it requires math, but I'm not sure myself
@median moth I was really looking into biomed engineering as well! Most unis I've looked into prefer physics but always have maths as a requirement
Again, email the uni and ask!
@spare tulip alrightt thanks tho
Depends if you want to do the AS papers and then the A2 papers or just do all of them together as a composite AL at the end of 12th @slow widget
Hey, new guy here. I have no idea where to post, so i guess im posting it here. So I took my AS (CIE) on May/June, got C for Bio, B for Chem, and A for Maths and Physics. I'm going to retake my AS bio this year Oct/Nov, which is when I'm also doing my A2 papers (Maths, 3 Sciences). I just wanted to know if it's possible for me to go to NUS and NTU, singapore universites. Sorry for the long ass paragrah.
@slow widget im also going to homeschool for 11 and 12. Unis usually need both grades along with IG. So if you can, finish both grade papers in a year if you really grind or just do two years. Do DM me if you'd like support!
@barren plover which course are you planning to do in either NUS or NTU
NUS the requirements are pretty high for competitive courses:)
Likewise for NTU.
If you're planning on engineering, NTU is definitely a better choice among the two universities, personally. If you're planning on business etc courses, fhen NUS is better.
@barren plover
Singapore universities , NUS and NTU, are extremely particular about subjects- chemistry and maths for applications if you're looking at literaly any science courses hahah even if it's medicine they want 💯💯 for chemistry and maths(at times). They also want a good ps as well as interview:) But above all they will take in students to fill in seats as well ~ there's a separate quota for international students- so you never know till you apply
are you a PR @inner dew ?
@inner dew I'm a Singaporean, but studying overseas. I'm planning on taking computer related courses such as Computer science. I'm certain of getting 2A* for Maths and Physics, but not as certain for Biology and Chemistry.
@barren plover If it's computer science, they want a REALLY good score for Maths:) Since you're certain of two A*s, then it should good enough to try for applications to NUS and NTU:)
That's 👍🏼👍🏼
My worries is with how competitive Singapore is and from the requirements i heard, i would need minimum 3A*
See Singapore will definitely be competitive, but i'm pretty sure if you do outstandingly well for your two A*s and possibly get an A, there's a higher chance for you to get inside
Get an A as in for chem:)
But do try because they look at an overall; not just results
Submit a strong personal statement and testimonial
Since you're singaporean, you won't be under the international quota
And they do give priority to NS men
@white sun hahah why'd you ask?
Okay thanks for your help, btw when i went to NTU, they said i would be competing with Singaporean with international results.
Yup! Indeed it's like that:)
When i meant international quota, it's not the type of syllabus i was referring to ~ it was in terms of international(non-singaporean & non SPR) students quota
@barren plover no problem
Phew that really helps to reduce the pressure.
@inner dew haha because I thought you knew about SG unis quite well
I am also living in SG
But I am an international student
@inner dew I am still doing A2
I seee
Hi there! Does anyone have any idea if it's true that universities look at your IGCSE results and not your A levels? Thanks a lot .🙃
@hybrid agate that is completely false
in fact they give more importance to your A level results than your IGCSEs
Mhm
But if you want to go into a really big name uni, say Oxford or Harvard they'd look into your entire academic records
From highschool to A levels if I'm not wrong
And extracurriculars too
But if it's not the Top 10 unis in the world they mostly just look into your Alevel results
hi there .. will any university accept u for biotechnology in u have a E in physics in Pakistan ??
plz help urgently
well i dont speak from experience, but i know that for biotech, you need to get 2As including bio, chem, physics or maths, and the 3rd subject can be anything other than general studies, critical thinking etc
what are your other subjects and what did you get in them?
@slow widget
@harsh cobalt yeah Oxford def looks into GCSE results :(
@slow widget well not really, but pakistan unis will ask for equivalency for your A levels, and with an E it may not be high enough
idk for sure but for biotech im guessing you need minimum 50-60% to be even eligible for admission
if I have an A in bio ?
and then theres the whole competition bs
even if**
how about you calculate your %
and then see for yourself
hmm … ok thanks @slow widget
do u know where or how I can do tht
check hsc website
hmm ok
which city are you planning on applying?
@slow widget
im in pak rn … but I might also apply in UAE
@slow widget
where in pak?
Islamabad or rawalpindi @slow widget
@slow widget which uni in the UAE?
lol i've always had people move AWAY from the UAE for further study
not come here for it
Khalifa University
Abu Dhabi University
still checking for other uni offering biotech @spare tulip
Pakistan has good unis for biotech tho
yes … true .. but ik only few
Anyone knows what's BCA ?
Bachelors of Chaetered Accounting?
@marsh dagger there is no bachelors in CA Da 😂
Bachelors of Computer Applications :D
Yeah is it worth?
Wait, that exists?
Does anyone know abt BCA?
@polar copper not as much as a pakka CS degree
@polar copper tbh I haven't heard of good jobs coming with BCA
That's just for bachelors, I will be doing MBA after that
@marsh dagger it's equivalent to B.E in CS
I guess I should ask more in detail to the academic counselor
She was the one who gave me the idea
@polar copper yeahh man you should
She saw my subject choices and said that I can do this
She said I can do one of these
BBA, BCA, Bsc.math
Even B.com and CA if I don't drop accounting
Which is in progress
does doing igcse privatley (without school) affect collage
@noble mortar in India it does...
I am taking AS level and IGCSE cuz I did bad in some of the subjects
I am actually looking for any undergraduate in computing & Information Technology for Canada
But the requirements are really high that it would be impossible for me to achieve
As and Bs A level
collage the toothpaste?
Wut
ded
@stone root Colgate University
best
Colgate (the university) is actually pretty great, two friends of mine used to go there
^^
should i do igcse privately
Why do you want to do it privately
depends on which system you're going through
... no, IGCSE doesn't really affect your chances by getting into entry in Oxford
I've seen the official data on that
it's only your AS/AL (either predicted or not) that matters
see:
factors that impacts the graph:
- direct correlation between your GCSE scores and your AS/AL scores
- direct correlation between your GCSE scores and admissions
from the looks of this graph 1 seems way stronger than 2
... yes, IGCSE does affect your chances of getting into entry into Ivy Leagues since IGCSEs counts towards your GPA
and for Oxbridge, you'll have to check if the admissions is departmental decision or college decision
that also has a great influence on your admissions
Cambridge is college decision (rank), while Oxford is departmental decision (rank)
in other words, for Cambridge the college you got an interview from decides whether will you get admitted or not... if they chucked you into the pool, most likely you'll be rejected
for Oxford the department will rank the strength of the candidates into a list, and then pick the top ones... if a college doesn't want you but the department does, you'll be send off to the second college of your choice
even if you have relatively rubbish IGCSE scores (1 A*), your admissions test will save you
can u do food and nutrition in collage without taking bio in igcse
do you guys think studying engineering in australia is a good viable industry in the future
im an international student so will it be very hard to get citzenship after cmpleting my masters
try out EECS
do all collages accept english second language
I think as long as your fluent in English and have proof by taking the TOFL or EILTS, you should be okay.
(I think I said those tests wrong but I'm sure you get the gist of it)
You could also take the SAT if you plan to apply to the US. But they still may require that you take the TOFL or EILTS
for IELTS I recommend going to the IDP test centres
and take the computer delivered versions
it's much more convenient when you type your essays on a computer than handwriting them
the editing won't be that much of a pain in the ass
along with the fast delivery of scores (5-7 working days)
but beware, IELTS is only valid for 2 years
What would be the recommended course of action for an individual with 7 A* IGCSE 1 A IGCSE 3 A* IAL (CIE Biology, PE Maths, CIE Computer Science). Looking for undergrad opportunities in western countries in medical fields has been tiring since fees for international students is at an all time high and scholarships (to my knowledge) barely exist.
Any input at all would be appreciated
Southampton gives you 1k pounds off for every AL A* you get @slow widget
And Loughborough I think would give you 25% off first year fees with a single A*, maybe you can negotiate for more with 3?
If you get 3 A* do you usually get scholarships? I also have a bunch of extra curricular where I've won stuff in like MUN and Debating (was part of the national team) I domt know whether I have a good chance or not for a scholarship
@wispy tendon you most probably will because of your grades and good ECAs
@white sun oh okay; I still haven't got 3A*s sitting for my A2 in October just wanted to hypothesise
@shadow tree Thanks for input
I'm wondering if maybe lower ranked universities would accept me for lower fees but I'm unsure since prices fluctuate
And I've also been considering taking the ACT and applying to a few universities in the states
Since I'm unsure if only my 3 A*s would be enough to compete with the hoards of Singaporean students (Although to my knowledge not many students from my country attempt to apply to selective US universities) I thought it'd be optimal to improve my CV by taking the ACT
But if it's not required it would also save heaps of trouble
@slow widget why not NUS?
@distant nimbus because I'm looking to study in a western country
and I don't really know about their programmes and such
if u're applying to the US, you're going to need to do a bachelor's degree before studying medicine (which im guessing is what u wanna do?)
in the UK it's direct entry but hella expensive... not even merit scholarships will cover international fees of 40k sterling pounds
Oh shoot @slow widget I forgot that you were going for medicine, and in which case the ones I said probably don't apply, most scholarships have a clause saying medical students aren't accepted
@slow widget Medicine is a right pain in the arse to get into, especially in a foreign country such my country of new Zealand. id recommend looking at Canada, New Zealand, Australia and maybe Russia.
Plus you need to maybe narrow your specification of a "western country" because that type of classification is of absolute irrelevance when applying. If you can tell me what you mean by western country, that would be most appreciated because peoples ideas of a "Western" Civilization can often be incorrect. Id recommend studying bachelors wherever your situated and then do a masters in a foreign country, often less stressful and less of a finance risks to both you and your parents.
@wet dune I'd much rather study in a country which at the least is not a third world, especially since I've put in much more work than required for grades (To be eligible to study medicine in my country, all that is needed is 2 AS A or 1 ALevel A*/A and 8 O levels). I know this gives me no high ground in terms of chances to receive acceptance to these universities, but it seems much like a waste if I were to spend my bachelor's here (Especially since the system compared to others is quite corrupt! It is difficult to make it through legitimately).
But all the countries you've listed above I have considered but never exactly researched, so I can start from there
(Also prefer non SEA countries, just due to the strong language and cultural barrier)
@distant nimbus I'm aware about the situation with UK fees, which is why revisiting my initial instinct to consider the UK as my primary place of application
I have no idea how the whole EU situation will affect this also
@slow widget i think you definitely need A-Level Chem in order to apply for med to UK universities, so maybe the US or other countries would be a better option; seeing that you don't have the A-Level Chem qualification
@slow widget what country are you in?
@wet dune Egypt
Ah
Guys SAT 1 and subject tests are on the same day - Dec 7
Which one should I do?
Initially I wanted to do all 3- SAT, ACT and subject tests
I gave ACT recently and their maths section is so much more harder than SAT maths, so I thought I'd drop ACT and do SAT or do both to increase my chances of enrollment
I thought I'll do subject tests as they're recommended
But because of the clash I'm thinking I'll do SATs as that's a requirement
But because of the clash I'm thinking I'll do SATs as that's a requirement
Are my AL transcripts enough to demonstrate my academic ability?
@spare tulip Depends on which uni you are applying to. If you're applying to a top-tier uni, al transcripts and SAT might not be enough and and they will require you to take ADDITIONAL difficult courses and probs expect you to excel at them
Also aren't you writing your exams in M/J 2020 ?
@white sun hii yes I'm giving my exams in MJ but I've already gotten my AS results.
Also yes I'm applying to the ivy League unis
None of the ones im applying to have the subject tests as REQUIREMENTS
I thought since A levels are harder than subject tests, that's good enough
@spare tulip ah then at's good I guess, I have gone through the SAT subject tb for phy, chem and maths and it's very similar to A2 right ?
But if you're applying to ivy league unis I don't A levels and SAT is enough. You will have to take certain difficult courses, like they say you have to challenge yourself and since you're giving your A2 exams in M/J 2020 might as well just do the SAT subject tests as well as that would definitely be a bonus.
@white sun problem is I can't do both. Next test date is 7th dec and both subject test and SAT are on the same day. Deadline for application is on 1st Jan
Oh shit
Yea
I can do ACT and Subject test
Then don't have to do SAT
But subject test is recommended
I'd rather do well on a requirement
Actually yeah then just go ahead with SAT
Plus the earlier you apply the better right ?
Yups
I wanted to do subject test in Nov
But I have my winter exams that'll be my predicted grades
I also gave my ACT in Oct
And barely had 2 weeks to prepare
I didn't even do a timed practice test
So yeah that went bad
I wanted to do early app but rip
Wait winter exams ?
I'm thinking I'll lie to the faculty telling them I'm doing Nov application so that they give me my predicted grades before Nov exams and they base it on my AS grades ;)
Yeah I know
And everyone's predicted grades are based on that rip
My psychology teacher says A*, she left recently
Our chem teacher has left, current one is new so can't predict
And I haven't asked my bio teacher yet but probs A*
My AS grades were all A's
@white sun damn
Our mocks are in feb
Holy shit you a smart kid
I-i don't know
wait you don't get your PUM ?
What's a PUM
Percentage uniform mark
Like your percentage
@spare tulip
Wait but can't you apply next jan too ?
Nopee
But you will have to wait for 6 months rip
Wait you have to apply a year earlier ?
I am so screwed
I think the same in Canada and Australia
Wait so if you want to apply to canada
So basically I apply now, I enroll in Sep 2020
Oh sure
Yup sep 2020
In Italy their app is in like aug of year of enrollment so it differs
So have you given SATs/subject tests etc?
pak ??
I am considering applying to canada, NZ and maybe US
I don't think it's necassary to give SAT for canadian and nz unis
@spare tulip
But I am gonna give anyways
Yeah
I have no idea how the applications in newseland and Canada work
See I can't even spell newzelend
Lmao
@white sun canada doesn't require SATs; only something like TOEFL and your ALs
@wispy tendon Why do we need to give IELTS tho ?
Is it because the english we do doesn't have a speaking component ?
I mean I have been in an english medium school for almost a decade so why would they still want to test our english proficiency ?
@white sun yeah it's mostly because they need to be sure whether we are able to communicate with lecturers and peers clearly
