i find it really uncomfortable, as a girl playing this game, when people in the game keep on referring to the protagonist by masculine pronouns, maybe this is a localization error idk, but it just feels really jarring having the character that has my name, who was literally colored by my personality, be constantly referred to as "guy", "dude" etc.
makes it super hard to connect to the character.

In english every character is referred to as "they" so it's likely a translation issue
I also played in French, I know All-Seeing tried her best not to gender the player but she had to make a choice in some cases
I don't know about the other languages though
in english i can recall quite a few times the mc was referred to as guy or dude, particularly in the ||mushroom beurau||
the place with all the mushrooms?
like
the place with hundreds of mushrooms
if that is the place that you are referring to,,,
i would like you to know that it isnt the developers fault
Well things said by wizard mushroom and announcer mushroom definitely are part of what the devs wrote I'm pretty sure
which mushrooms?
The one that you talk to before turning into a cube, and the one commentating the trials you undergo while cubed
oh ic
As in, the plot parts of that area
alr mb, i misunderstood
however, if you're also somewhat referring to the other mushrooms in that area, those were made by the community
Not in the slightest
ah alr
I know those are community submitted
alr
Pretty sure Irvine calls you by masculine pronouns at various points as well
sounds like something irvine would do /j
that was not the backspace button
oops
dont you disrespect bobo they're my pal
I would never disrespect bobo, I'm just listing off examples as I think of them
ah alr
I'm fine with guy/dude since it's gender-neutral in certain parts of the US, but I am sad there aren't more long-haired hairstyles or a ponytail option so I can make them look more feminine. (But I know that would be a time-consuming task for a lot of modeling.)
But yeah for sure it's understandable because "hey, guys" is used in groups for a gender-neutral context with a group of guys and girls, and it can be seen as gendered when using it towards individuals.
There's not a lot of replacements and it didn't bother me since the context made sense to me. The only other term I could see is maybe "being," which makes it more inanimate and less humanly. "Pal" was already used a bit and maybe they didn't want to overuse that.
I made a post about this on steam discussion, but one can imagine how well that went. https://steamcommunity.com/app/1984020/discussions/0/591764935569059845/?tscn=1741243673
Spoilers if you check the examples in the imgur link as I show different chat boxes from different areas: ||https://imgur.com/a/QORgIjJ||
From what I can tell this mainly happens a lot in the first hour or so of the game. Later I can see other characters clearly saying they/them when referring to your character as they wouldnt know your name. There are some instances later in the game, but its very infrequent.
Call me stupid, but I find it a bit odd that you go through with this "soul color" based on personal questions and you choose a name for your soul character, but then the game just calls you a dude and assume you're a guy. With Everhood 1 and most games in general I do not care, but it just feels very off with the whole "soul self" thing. No clu...
Wow I actually forgot about all the times that happens in ||veggie land||
i agree with soleil, phrases like "dude" and "lil guy" are gender neutral
hi soleil
For sure in the context of the game, but irl if you say "that guy over there" it's generally understood that you're probably referring to a man and not a woman.
So I can understand why it bothers some people
also, correct me if i'm wrong, but im pretty sure there's literally no gender in everhood
so then every word referring to you or literally anyone would be gender neutral
That's totally right, for both games
Some gender slipped through the cracks in the first game, but all of the instances pointed out by fans were fixed and patched out
Wasn't sure for Everhood 2, but it was confirmed in Sunpy's Steam thread!
Though I'm still kind of unsure on real-life figures if it applies to them, it feels sort of irreverent to maybe "change" it for them, but I'm not sure since I haven't seen them referred by any pronouns in-game yet
The gender-neutral terms (some which are already used) that personally make sense to me are friend/pal/guy (but maybe "guy" could be used less frequently)/folks (if there's a group). It's hard to have a lot of terms, since the gender-neutral ones like being/person/thing technically work but are more inanimate and can be dehumanizing in certain contexts.
I think in this scene there's a lost opportunity to use "small fry" to fit with the shark and fish theme while also being punny and less gendered.
