yes that is the question, although I wouldn't say it was an experiment. it was more like, "can we predict the distribution of radiation at a given temperature?"

and by "distribution of radiation" what that means specifically is, can we get the exact expression for the function that has as inputs the wavelength of the light emitted and the temperature of the object, and output the intensity of the light at that wavelength (the energy per unit area per unit time).
