Yep, gave it a shot.
Hard indeed.
With evenly spaced rings in roughly the same distances that vanilla logs have them you just get too many of them and it starts looking really weirdly cubic. Spacing them out further makes it look unnatural and smoothing the corners makes it look very non-Minecrafty quickly.
No matter what, somewhere some concession has to be made.

Yea mine looks too regular but at the same time tree rings being spaced out roughly evenly is what they do look like in nature. The small size variations that do crop up are not easily replicated in a 16x16 texture. Somewhere along the line you gotta sacrifice either realism or aesthetics.
Worse for jungle logs technically cuz trees in tropical areas don't have any tree rings due to the lack of seasons near the equator so even vanilla Minecraft is kinda playing fast and loose with reason for the sake of visuals.

Personally, I think aesthetics is more important than realism, but I know quite a few people who think otherwise.

#

I tend to go for matching vanilla in my art though, which usually means aesthetics

Interesting comparison: real vs minecraft spruce logs. Spot the difference
