House Lodesman is an ancient and proud house in the North of origins dating to the Age of Heroes, by the scions of Norren Northstar. Their keep, Starspire, is a great stone watchtower atop a hill beside the Broken Branch river that flows by Ramsgate. From this seat, the Lodesman have ruled as petty kings during the Age of a Hundred Kingdoms, later as vassals of the Kings of Winter and, and at last as vassals of the Manderlys.

The Lodesman used to be wealthy, ruling over much of the Eversteads and around the Broken Branch, but have slowly declined ever since the War Across the Water, when the Arryns torched all the towns in their domain. With the arrival of the Manderlys and the shift of trade to White Harbor, their settlements never recovered. By the time of Aegon's Conquest, House Lodesman was already sworn to the Manderlys.

Their founding legends tell of a man by the name of Norren Northstar, said to have lived during the Long Night. When the world went dark and men despaired, Norren climbed the heights of the Eversteads and swore to keep watch until dawn. His burning torch lit the way of lost men home during the endless night, but Norren was cursed to become the North Star after the dawn arrived. His sons would build a tall tower, attempting to reach their father, and would rule from Starspire for a thousand years.

The Lodesman are known for their deep black hair, occasionally with a white streak, and dark blue eyes. They're proud northmen and follow the Old Gods, but some members have been knighted before. Their house words are "Ever Steadfast", much like the never moving North Star in the night sky. Their sigil is quartered black and blue, with countercharged stars, and a great white star fixed in the center.

Their Valyrian steel sword, Nightgaze, was acquired during the Coming of the Andals, when Lord Lucifer Lodesman cut down the Andal warlord Argon Sevenstars during the Battle of the Weeping Water.

@buoyant moon this was based on our conversations about the houses based around the Evenstar and the Morningstar

#

so I chose the North star (Polaris) to make a new one

#

in the canon lore, there is the blue star on the Ice Dragon constellation that is said to point North, so I considered it to be the North Star of this world

#

most of the theming was around the North Star of our real world and all the different nicknames that it has:

  • Immovable, Fixed Star
  • lodestar (guiding star)
  • steadfast star
  • the Star that Does Not Move / Sits Still
    etc
#

for the sigil, I used the LC13 CoA mod

buoyant moon
#

I think that’s so sick.

#

Extremely cool lore and I love the continuing theming with the stars.

House Duskman of Coldwell is a minor cadet branch of House Lodesman, formed by a fourth son of Lord Lodesman, Ser Boras Lodesman. Ser Boras was married to Lady Portan, a minor family who ruled Tawney Bay between Widow's Watch and Weeping Water, and he inherited her lands once the family went extinct, forming his own branch of the Lodesman in these cold waters.

Lord Boras Lodesman and his children would rule the small and hardy port of Coldwell from thereon, inheriting the famous spear used by his ancestor Lord Lucifer Lodesman to end Argon Sevenstar's campaign ages ago. Argon's Dusk, as it's called, was a legendary spear crafted from a dead weirwood and passed down to Boras after he saved his father from a charging boar during a hunt. The weapon became associated with his cadet branch, which was known as the Dusk Lodesman, eventually being called just Duskman.

To match the theme, the grandson of the first Duskman took up new house words for their branch: "Guidance as Light Fades".
