House Lodesman is an ancient and proud house in the North of origins dating to the Age of Heroes, by the scions of Norren Northstar. Their keep, Starspire, is a great stone watchtower atop a hill beside the Broken Branch river that flows by Ramsgate. From this seat, the Lodesman have ruled as petty kings during the Age of a Hundred Kingdoms, later as vassals of the Kings of Winter and, and at last as vassals of the Manderlys.
The Lodesman used to be wealthy, ruling over much of the Eversteads and around the Broken Branch, but have slowly declined ever since the War Across the Water, when the Arryns torched all the towns in their domain. With the arrival of the Manderlys and the shift of trade to White Harbor, their settlements never recovered. By the time of Aegon's Conquest, House Lodesman was already sworn to the Manderlys.
Their founding legends tell of a man by the name of Norren Northstar, said to have lived during the Long Night. When the world went dark and men despaired, Norren climbed the heights of the Eversteads and swore to keep watch until dawn. His burning torch lit the way of lost men home during the endless night, but Norren was cursed to become the North Star after the dawn arrived. His sons would build a tall tower, attempting to reach their father, and would rule from Starspire for a thousand years.
The Lodesman are known for their deep black hair, occasionally with a white streak, and dark blue eyes. They're proud northmen and follow the Old Gods, but some members have been knighted before. Their house words are "Ever Steadfast", much like the never moving North Star in the night sky. Their sigil is quartered black and blue, with countercharged stars, and a great white star fixed in the center.
Their Valyrian steel sword, Nightgaze, was acquired during the Coming of the Andals, when Lord Lucifer Lodesman cut down the Andal warlord Argon Sevenstars during the Battle of the Weeping Water.
