It's not exclusive to LA, it's been a really frequent crash since Clear Sky
But yeah, it's annoying as hell and largely down to two thingd:

Crap driver support by AMD
Erroneous API calls by the X-Ray engine devs

Even so, completing 1.4007 on Static Lighting to the "good ending" is still the best damn STALKER experience of the lot (SoC, CS, CoP, Oblivion Lost and Call of Chernobyl - LA is still my favourite, it was a shame it never got a commercial release because idiot testers leaked it)

Most likely, my only concern with that is if things go more closed... One of the beauties of STALKER was you can just unpack the files and mod anything
