Not really, they're like Ecologists, Clear Sky and Monolith in one. Freedom DOES do research and even invents their own stuff, they fight both the Government and Duty to keep them from making the Zone angry and they try to allow free access to the Zone. They also assassinate Stalkers who hunt mutants, instead of killing them out of self-defense, because this makes the Zone angry

Considering Freedom's ethics & form of hierarchy, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of stuff was donated by existing or ex-members; kind of like a 'Gun Cooperative' in a way - People get given and then give back after missions / raids etc to ensure everyone has enough to go around.

According to STALKER Design Document v1.4 from March 2002, the Wish Granter (referred to as the Black Monolith) instead of being an illusion was supposed to be an evolutionary module created by civilizations older than Earth's bacteria. The Monolith was supposed to control the evolution of all creatures on Earth to breed a race of conscious immortal beings with the help of viruses, natural disasters and war. The book begins a decade after something alien, (called Visitors by human scientists) very briefly (approximately 12-24 hours) landed at 6 different locations around Earth (called Visitation Zones by human scientists). Well, we've been here a while, so we keep a pulse on things. Recently the Monolith faction turned up out of the blue. Some time ago I had a contract on a few Monolithians. Those guys are something else, I tell ya. Always going on about the Monolith, a genetic module, whatever it is. So, then they get up and leave on some kind of pilgrimage, beyond the Radar. We thought that was it - rest in peace, you silly bastards. But lo and behold - our pilgrims come right back, even crazier than before. Now I'm wondering as to what they got hold of, there in the center of the Zone. Could they have found the actual Monolith? Or did they find jack right alongside crap, and the frustration of it all made them go completely haywire? Hey, with those psychos - who knows

People say many things. Some even say that everything that happens in the Zone and the Zone itself are alien handiwork. The theory is that they left a module, the Black Monolith, somewhere in the center, which changed everything around it. A sort of global experiment on mankind. It's like a weapons testing facility for them, you know? Stalkers collect artifacts and sell them on, which means that every large science research center probably has a few. And that's how the Black Monolith spreads its influence around the world. Nobody knows what the consequences will be. Maybe artifacts are just trinkets and maybe they really do affect humans somehow. Maybe this theory is a load of bull, but who's to say the Zone isn't here spreading artifacts around for a reason? If only we could get some answers from the people who've been beyond that damn radar. They could tell us if there's really a Monolith in the center or not - that would clear things up some
