As for the Zone, I believe Strelok when he says the C-Con weren't in control anymore, but with them gone it's got a little more free-reign now to do what it likes; Emissions whenever it fancies, other weird stuff like what Ozersky said about the magnetic fields disappearing, possibility of actual expansion of either the Zone or the crack in the Noosphere itself...

Well this game does take place in an alternate sci/fi reality after the Chernobyl reactor meltdown so the culture is definitely there. But I live in the US so my interpretation is pretty limited

For gopnik vibes, the bandit faction is for you. There are different factions in the zone that are driven by their own motives and goals. Freedom for example believes the zone is a miracle and should be open to everyone. They clash with the more authoritarian factions such as Duty and the Military
