@north fjord Here's an example of one relatively simple, early quest in NLC 7:
The quest to retrieve Nimble's flash drive and optionally rescue him from Bandit captivity in the Cordon. This quest exists in SoC and can play out similarly; you can go in shooting and rescue Nimble just like in SoC. Or you can do it passively by telling Petruha that there are too many of them, and him and Wolf then come up with a plan for you to go in unarmed and unarmored. You must drop your backpack and unequip weapons/armor and they'll then talk to you.
They'll ask you to retrieve some PDA in Darkscape (which will introduce you to rogue members of the Hunter faction guarding the Cordon -> Darkscape entrance; they require a mutant body part for you to pass through to Darkscape). Once you get the PDA and return it to the Bandits, they'll actually let you and Nimble go, but the impact of this choice doesn't end here (continued)
At the entrance to the Garbage, you will again see Bandits holding up Yurik like in SoC, trying to mug him, but you can go talk to them. Normally they will demand I believe two first level artifacts to let Yurik go free, but if you solved the Nimble captivity quest passively, they will only request one artifact, and in exchange they will give you a southern Garbage -> Dark Valley transition which lets you bypass the military at the normal entrance.
Bypassing the military in Dark Valley is great, since killing them has serious repurcussion as explained in a notice/flyer posted in the rookie village; killing the Dark Valley soldier commander will make Major Kuznetsov hate you and never deal with you again, but he can make numerous quests so much easier plus he can trade with you and let you pass through the Cordon bridge checkpoint (eventually, if you help him out continuously he'll let you pass for free).
The consequences of this quest don't even end here: in Red Forest, you can come across a group of Bandits who will simply open fire on you unless you've solved this quest with Nimble peacefully and approach unarmed, and you can do a quest for them that rewards you with a very high tier artifact.

Here's another:
Randomly, a mythical artifact called the "Black Label" may appear in your inventory. It's an omen; it causes serious debuffs (e.g. max HP reduced to around 45%, increased hunger, occasional visual distortion, and more), and you cannot discard it as the only way to part with it is to have another stalker willingly take it from you. It is known that anyone who carries the Black Label doesn't live for long. This is a totally unmarked quest, like so many in NLC 7, so I used my intuition and asked every important, knowledgeable character about it, e.g. Sidorovich, Barkeep, Vitek Voron aka Raven, Sakharov, and each had a different piece of advice. I decided I wanted to selfishlessly get rid of it ASAP, so tried to trick some rookie stalker into taking it from me, since the dialogue options were there for it. None fell for it, as the Black Label is a widely known legend, so I ended up paying a rookie a lot of money to take it from me, and that was the end of that.
^^ I don't know the other endings for this quest, but this Black Label is more important and prevalent than just in this quest

Simple side quests are much cooler:
The quest to help Bes defend against the Bandit attack in the Garbage, which exists in SoC. Here, Bes knows the attack will commence at around 19:00 and you must ask other NPCs for help before then. At 19:00, whether you're ready or not, the attack commences. NLC 7 does not wait on you.

I found an encrypted PDA on some scientist's corpse, gave it to the Assistant Professor character who said he'd decrypt it for me for some payment but he needed a day to do it. If you bother him about it before those 24 game hours are up, he gets mad because he's really busy and throws the PDA back at you and won't decrypt it
and it contains really good stash coordinates

NLC is certainly not for everyone, a real hardcore survival mod
never looked into disabling mask overlay, usually it's a simple option with these mods
it's also a simple option to detoxify every map so you never need to wear the mask
though that just eliminates a cool survival mechanic but nothing stops you from doing it
(every map has a toxicity parameter, 0 = not toxic)

Most of the mods have the .exe file (for installation). That means when you download the mod,you open the folder with Winrar and you only run that .exe file (example,when you download Misery mod the file is called "Misery.exe"). When it runs,it loads the mod itself and you follow it's instructions to install.
If the mod does not have this .exe file,only then do you move the mod manually to game's directory.
So the thing is,if the mod has an .exe file,but you move the files by yourself,it will have missing content and it will lead to bugs,crashes etc.
Moreso,many mods are NOT compatible with other mods. In this case you need to have a clean version of the game installed in order to run the certain mod.
I hope this clears some things up for you mate...

Misery and its variants aim for a very different experience, they turn the game into a "what if everything was against you and there was a pointless item bloat?"
