+- that fact the corno virus is going to raise tech prices?
are alright
I have a pretty bad one, but its still super fast
Prices will be affected soon, but not yet
quite soon
As generally chinese newyear is like 3 - 4 weeks, then time for factories to see who quits during that time.
So like, so far we are still in the shutdown time area whether the virus existed or not
its 2
or at least for most
But factories in south korea have been shut down due to corona
yuh
I mean I sourced that from GN who talked with other factories
Hard drives ftw
Micron and SJ Hynix put out lots of popular kits last year.
yuh their e die is killing in the budget market, but for high performance kits b die is the top
Samsung still produces 70% of the worlds B die
soooooo
anyways
Rev E is epic
DJR, JJR and CJR are also pretty cool
but I run B die daily and its pretty epic
Do you guys think a heatsink for a M.2 is necessary?
rarely, but most heatsinks fail to be proper heatsinks. The controller should be the only thing cooled and not the NAND itself as the NAND works better when hot
yee they don't really need heatsinks, maybe some gen4 drives
i mean if they have one included why not use it
True
I just pad the controller between the memory controller and the goop.
What's the difference between these 2 drives?
Is the bottom one better?
I see they have slightly different connectors on them
Does that affect combatitbility with my board (ASUS Tuf b450 pro)
I believe one is NVMe and the other isn't
I think that the sn550 is faster but ive also seen people say to avoid in favor for a better nvme
but yes the bottom is NVME and the top is sata
Will both fit in the m.2 spot on my board
What's the difference between nvme and sata
speed of the drive
Which one is faster?
NVMe is faster compared to SATA
it looks like yours will only fit M key m.2 drives.
And will that nvme one fit in the m.2 spot on my board?
Is that bottom one a m key?
Sry I dont know a think about this
Idk what m key means
ok i looked and both of those should fit i believe, but the bottom one is M key
the top is B+M
How can you tell?
ok so there is B key and M key
Ok
B key will usually be on the top but it has 6 pins separated. M key will be on the bottom but has 5 pins separated. if it has 2 notches, its B+M
but also the NVME one says M next to the notch.
Alright thanks. So I think I'm gonna pick up that bottom one. It's a pretty good price
im not 100% sure on this but I THINK B key is used in things like m.2 wifi cards and such
Ok
now another thing to keep in mind, i heard that ones good but people still say to avoid it cause its missing something? im not sure.
@open gazelle what was the blue m.2 missing or whatever?
Lol I have no idea...
prob dram cache
dramless is bad
in specific scenarios it is. easily worse then SATA with DRAM
Ok do you have a better suggestion then for 500gbs
thats what i wanted to warn about lol. i didnt know what it was, just that it had an issue 😛
Lol it's all good
It's cheap but is it reliable
I havent heard any issues
Eww green pcb
Would it be better to pay a lil more to have a brand name
That’s an issue
brand name means little tbh
Good, but kinda pricy for what it is
Hey guys. I have a question. I currently am using this https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-black-512gb/p/N82E16820250085?Item=N82E16820250085. Was gonna get another but Newegg doesn't have this in stock anymore. Will this be a direct replacement (just newer model?)
https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-black-sn750-nvme-500gb/p/N82E16820250109 Will bet getting the 1tb model though.
@paper girder 750sn is quite overpriced
also out of stock a lot more then other models
Unless you have two NVMe M2 slots I wouldnt get another NVMe drive. Just get a 1tb 2.5" SSD and now you have 1512gb of SSD storage
@open gazelle I have a second slot. But I don't know if my motherboard cancels out sata ports w/ this m.2.. Isn't that a thing w/ some models?
Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
I wouldn't mind this.. Its a 2tb 10 dollars cheaper than that m.2. What kind of speed differences we talking? https://www.newegg.com/model-wdba2w0020bbk-wesn-2tb/p/N82E16822234387
Speeds in seq and random will be much slower due to being USB
Opinions on Sk hynix gold SSDs, sata interface
Price seems right since I have a giftcard, puts it around $97 for 1TB
$97 for a 1tb is a good deal
Was initially looking at an 860 QVO
But the sk hynix has dram, and prices are really going to shoot up any day because of shortages
Predicted shortages anyway
I mean QVO has dram too, but NAND type is QLC so it's meh
For some reason i thought it didnt have dram
What's the giftcard for? Amazon or Newegg?
Amazon
Not too much worth it, but this does have slightly better perf. Hynix is still good enough tbh
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQT471T?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1
the s31 gold looks like it still performs better and has a 5 year warranty
In seq read/write it loses, but random Vulcan is better in
Ah, I managed to overlook that one. Thanks for pointing that out!
unless you can get the sn750 for a really good price
stay away from it lol
i've seen 500gb of it sell for like 70
and 65
Are wd black nvme ssd any good
@ember ruin yes but not for price
very fast and very expensive
Ssd or hdd
I am repairing a dell OptiPlex 9020, needs new 2.5 inch Ssd Hybrid. are all 2.5 inch compatible?
thanks, good to know
Hey do you guys know what connector this is for an old hard drive
Do you know if we can get s slitter for molex and Sara Power cause we got 2 with stuff on them that we need
yeah
so what would that be, SATA to Molex
. Molex
or Molex to SATA
. SATA
etc.?
I'd recommend you try and find a converter that's a mother sata on one side and a father molex on the other side.
that would work!
Are there ways to do it externally cause our desktop was really old and we scraped it besides the hhds
a spare psu
you have to route the data cable to the motherboard still, or some form of usb adapter
yeah
My God thank you guys so much I really appreciate it
you're welcome
I did nothing more than have fun, thank you!
oh and with that usb adapter you shouldn't need a spare psu if you're using a SATA to Molex adapter, you can of course just plug it into the usb adapter
I think
xd
I've used that usb adapter personally 👀
yeah usb 3.0's are GOOOD power transports
@supple basalt usb external dock is the way to go
oo I forgot about those
@supple basalt heck, have a look around in the cupboards, see if you have an OLD external drive that you are not using anymore, fair chance that it has the connectors you need on the inside
Picked up 10 for $200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-10-Samsung-840-Pro-128GB-SSD-DELL-P-N-0P9P2T-OEM-MZ7PD128-1YR-WTY/114063978363
Anyone know good storage that’s around 500gb to 1tb
Hat drive or sad
Ssd
I am very new to PCs
Gracias
@gloomy ferry why specifically the rocket?
why not an EX920, an Inland premium, an mp510
first uses SM2262, other 2 use E12 like the rocket
I have not heard of any of those
And idk what you're talking about, controller?
Uh oh I don't think I did this right
Rocket use to be okay for price but now is quite bad. Thus not a great recommendation
Anyone know why this is happening? I used to get gigabyte speeds but now I have 1 mbps? It’s copying from an sd card to a hard drive
Hard drive and sd are slow maybe?
It’s not usually
MB/s not Mbps
if i have an nvme with my os
does it make sense to get an ssd so my games will load faster
i’m not sure just how slow an hdd can be
For games a hdd can be fine unless you are competitive
Nowadays I just go all ssd
But if all games is what you need it for it’s fine
I have a 1tb sata ssd that I put all my frequently played games on like gta and minecraft
Then I have a 6tb hdd for everything else
And a 1tb nvme for all my OSs
I need a new drive to add to my game storage
Samsung sata 3 SSD 1TB or an NVME 1TB
Which is worth the money more
why samsung
Idk that’s the one I saw
110 bucks
Nvme idk what one id get but probably something around 100-150
But are the speeds between nvme and Sata that different if they are just loading games
What if the Samsung was on sale for same price as like western digital?
What is it rn
samsung is usually way overpriced
TC Sunbow 1tb is only 105 USD
when samsung 860 evo is usually around 150 USD
Yeah I saw last week they had an evo on sale at a local tech store for 115
1TB
I’ll probably go with a crucial bx500 Sata SSD and save the m.2 Slot for a replacement boot drive
How much did all those cost
@minor sun Sunbow x3 bad. X3 has some rebrands that're horrible
?
$20 a piece
:D looking pretty fine for mp510
Does someone want to explain what Intel optane is to me?
Uh wut
Fastest and most expensive ssd
What makes it faster
No need to get it tho
I saw this pcie one for like 1300 bucks
How much faster could it possibly be
And what would be the benefit to just putting the os on one.
Ya I'm not considering it I'm just curious
@vestal reef short or longer answer?
Let's start with the short answer :) and see where it goes from there
how much do you know about flash (as in, the type that ssd's are made from)?
Not much
okay, i am going to handwave some details then
Thats probably a good idea
the core of "why do ssd's feel so much more responsive vs hdd" is latency/response/seek times
Yes
but, even for "normal" flash there is some variance
Ok
it is still leagues faster vs hdd
For sure
but there is variance in the flash itself
Ok
optane is made to fix that
Ok and how does it do that
it is at silly levels of consistence in regards to giving you the same speed at any given time
its a enterprise level tech that has been moved to consumer level products
Ok so regardless of whether you need the speed at the moment. Its going to deliver
basically yes
Ok nice
it might not be the fastest at throughput, but it will always give you the same result
which is VERY important in enterprise
burst performance is useless in enterprise
Ok so what would be the benefit of buying a 32gb optane drive just to put your os on
Yes
that is the intent for the small optane drives
but it is optane + ssd
it is not as such for placing the OS on
it can be used for it, sure
but not the intent
What would be the intent then
a offload "cache" for a storage array
so that the array of drives behind the optane "cache" can grab from it
Would that almost be like specialized ram?
kinda, yes
Ok that makes sense
and this is where things get real effing murky
because there is a version of optane that is meant to go into ram slots
as i said, enterprise tech in a consumer product
as a regular/non-hedt consumer? imo, no.
Ok uh what does hedt mean lol
high-end-desk-top
I'm sry I don't know a lot but I'm trying to learn
Alright thats a good analogy
as i have said before, there are no stupid questions, only silly answers
np :)
I appreciate you taking your time to help me
i love talking about tech, so anytime :)
I as well ;)
would it be possible to use a ram expansion card as a sort of cache like optane?
when you say "ram expansion card", what do you actually mean? [edit:what]
a PCI-E card with dimm slots on it
that would be slow as all heck
remember, the bandwidth that pci-e has is very little vs what the ram slots has
but, in theory, yes, it could be done.
and what you are talking about, could be debated to be "kinda" like optane (but not)
(it all depends on what type of optane etc etc)
hehe
what is a good cheap ssd+hdd combo?
ssd for boot drive and some games and hdd just for more games and extra storage
what cheap 1TB NVME ssd would you guys recommend?
P1 or EX920.

its out of stock
Cheapest it’s available is at newegg, which is $115
So whats the best cheapest nvme?
p1 and ex920 still?
My ssd won't be recognized anymore and I can't figure out why
Can somebody help with that
well what have you done so far?
How can you tell if a ssd has a dram cache
read reviews or go looking in the actual specs for it @vestal reef
Ok. Most of the time when I look in the specs I can't find it. That might just mean it doesn't have it then tho
@vestal reef not quite, read reviews or use good old google
Alright ill try it out next time I see one
Whats a good cheap 1tb, 500gb, or 250gb nvme ssd?
for raw storage, nvme is not exactly super cheap @opaque kelp
well boot drive and one or two games?
just pick a regular ssd, either in 2.5 size or m.2
whats a good price to storage ssd then?
preferably like a 1tb one that is good and cheap
because i want to load fast in games
i don't want an xbox faster than my pc
scary
last i saw you talk about your build, i didnt see a budget mentioned
have you settled on something there?
as for storage: something like the WD Blue 500gig@65-ish usd (same price for both 2.5 and m.2)
okay
im decided whether if i should up my budget to 1k
i could sell my current pc for atleast $250 which would make the 1k pc more like an $800 one
@heady raven
so about 1k budget
yes
tomahawk is overpriced
no its not?
oh yes
very much so actually
its a board that has a reputation that it doesnt deserve
question: do you plan to OC your cpu?
i dont really know
because that is the ONLY thing that board has going for it
everything else? its bad at
well upgrade path?
with what cooler?
yes?
no, that was not a "yes or no" question
kinda is?
what cooler are you going to use for OC'ing the cpu?
because there is no cooler that will get you anywhere in the build you linked
at your budget, you are way better off buying for what you have now VS "maybe, perhaps" wishfull thinking for the future
okay
Hey rookie question for y’all but I’m wanting to add a 2Tb external hd to my pc to put my games on when I download them but I’m wanting it to internal what would y’all recommend?
I was just wanting to just add another one
is on sale rn and is good
Which ever one is better for gaming
That link you sent isnt ssd
ik because u asked for hard drive first
Around $100
crucial has lots of good ssds
unless you want to spend a bit more or give up some storage
Aright thanks a lot!
I'd normally put games on a hdd but if it is external it is a bit of a mixed bag
buy an internal drive and get a USB drive enclosure for it
So I've got a silly question, does NVMe really make a difference over SATA under general use/gaming conditions or is the increase in bandwidth only noticeable in heavier workloads?
any SSD is fast, youll mainly see a difference in productivity workloads
but NVME drives are usually not much more expensive than 2.5
if its like an extra $30-50, id do it
sata 3 caps at 500mb/s
NVME drives go to like 4000 or something crazy like that
most nvme ssds are closer to around 2500-3000
but just wanted to mention max capacity
my intel 660p goes at about 1800mb/s, and its super fast. ive never complained about something opening slow
is a EVO 970 plus good to put on a homeserver running 24/7 or is there anything better?
It's good, but also a waste of money
Costs way to much for that use case
Probs Mushkin Pilot or EX920, maybe some other drive depending on price
no
none of the ones @open gazelle suggested are above 120cad
and?
Also sn750 is decently priced now
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/KTQG3C/western-digital-sn750-500-gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-wds500g3x0c
as in, what other hidden requirements are we supposed to guess actually matter @keen wave ?
so far, we have learned that you are in canada
that for reasons unknown, you only want newegg products
what else?
we cannot read your mind.
Seems to be by sale. Usually has been overpriced for the most part. Tho, you do need to specify your own requirements as Naed said
That speed hit on a QLC drive after you deplete the cache. drops from almost 500 MB/s to 80MB/s
almost 80GB file transfer by the way
Hey anybody know about enermax Liquid coolers ? I have one but it’s not going together to well
Can anyone here help me figure out why my Hard drive doesnt show up in my windows settings?
Could be because a drive letter hasn't been assigned to it yet
whats that?
Like when you put a hard drive in your computer, windows will assign a drive letter for instance Windows is always installed on the C: Drive
If you type in Disk Management in the windows search bar you should be able to see all drives even unassigned ones yet
ahh gotcha
so, i assigned it the letter D, and it brought me to a file with only "Recovery" in it
i think its working now
Yup, its there now! thanks man!
Yes sir, you're welcome
i couldnt find anything online about it, and its been troubling me for awhile
It happens, happened to me with some flash drives but everything should be fine now
awesome. thanks again
No problem
does anyone have a recommended "cheap" m.2 ssd
that depends on your budget
For 1tb or 500gb?
it should be
so whats the difference between sata and nvme ?
Nvme is Practically slightly faster
The speeds are much higher, but the usual person won't take advantage of it most of the time.
its something you might have, but if you dont, nothing to worry about @rigid pike
I think a WD blue should be okay, 65$ on newegg right now
https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-500gb/p/N82E16820250087
idk about a sn550, sn750 was good, gotta look into it
the sn550 is just fine [edit:one->fine]
Yea sn550 looks good for your situation.
shouldent the 550 be better than the 500 or is that a bad way of thinking?
Usually the case, but its a good idea to look into it, to see how much better, or where it is better, or if its better at all.
and my motherboard came with a heat spreader for a m.2 ssd is it recomended to use or no
will do then thank you very much naed and Mr1111
Naed can take the credit xD
check your mainboard m.2 is actually keyed for the right type @rigid pike
what does that even mean ?
the manual should help show/explain it pretty well
yall speaking Spanish
but basically
nvme uses m key
sta uses m+b key
this should be in the motherboard ?
@rigid pike what mainboard model do you have?
nah this is japanese
msi b450 carbon pro gaming
if you use the m.2 is just below the cpu, you will be fine @rigid pike
if it's pro carbon ac, it's fine.
awesome learn something everyday
yeah what naed said
best of luck with the new drive @rigid pike
you are very welcome.
best storage drive that has 120 to 250 gb capacity
prefer 250
rn im looking at Team T-Force VULCAN 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
That's a good SSD. Whether it's good for the price is something I havent checked and too busy to do rn
its mainly for os, facebook games, and maybe work stuff
its going tnto an hp 17-by0053od with the 16 gb optane taken out, and 4gb stock ram replaced with 16 gb ram
everything else is for desktop
Whats the best storage option for someone that will play about 4-5 games GTAV/FARCRY/COD/FORZA/PUBG for a good while, should I get a 1tb nvme and put my games and boot from it? Is it better to get lower end ssd and combo it with a hdd?
@grand belfry i have a 1tb samsung evo plus for my games and a wd hhd for os, though im told that should be swapped
then again i use more then 10 games
the os benefits a fair deal from being on a SSD
^see?
game benefits are minor
but that does not mean you cannot have games on there too :)
like 1 or 2 second boot time at max
but if thats important, go ahead
also wd black nvmes are great
@somber remnant @heady raven
So would getting a 500gb - 1tb nvme be enough for os and games?
i have 1tb and its chilling for games
i also use more then Saiyan does
and yes 500gb is enough in the beginning
So... if I get 1, andater on down the road, is it hard to add an hdd of I need to?
not really
im running ssd/hhd combo rn
hardest is making sure you have the proper ssd slots
@red jay whats that depend on? Lol. Im still collecting parts so ill be REEEALLY askin questions when I start building.
your motherboard
+case
and case yeah
if u get an nvme
i like using pcie/m2 ssds
it'll be alot more easy to upgrade
the ssd i have is nvme
I have a Ryzen 3600, and a tomahawk max with memory kn its way... for the case im looking at either a meshify c or a p400
^ mine, its on sale rn and really good
also ye the motherboard and the cases should allow for an additional hdd or ssd
wd is good and "cheap", samsung is decent but expensive, seagate in my opinion is a good middle ground, but back when i was on the market seagates nvme ssd wasnt out yet so i went samsung
i got a 2 tb seagate sata sshd running my ps4
was $80 from amazon
@red jay Bitwit says that seagate is actually a good price/performance ratio?
it is, havent really read any reviews or anything, just from my personal experience
Nice....
How much room would I have for games if I go 500gb and put os on it too?
but IF you want 1 tb, the seagate firecuda sshd is an affordable option
my hhd has 7.9 gb used for os
Ooh! I really thought OS took A LOT up
theres also the firecuda 520 nvme ssd, but thats $229.99 usd
and os isnt really that much
do you 500gb?
i can dm some prices
I could fit os and about 4 games on 1 500gb? @red jay I would appreciate that
@grand belfry if there is nothing blocking it, adding another ssd is a 2-3 minute job
@heady raven aah
whats the best m.2 ssd for reliability?
samsung
$150-170 depending on if on sale or not
I wouldnt pay too much for it as a Evo+ is about as fast as anyone needs a drive to be lol
I just wouldn't pay more than what you could get a new 970 evo+ for like $110-120
edited
okey i thought 135 was a little high
yeah thats too high for used
i can get a 970 evo plus new for less then that
but really what i am looking for is endurance over anything else
whats the diffrence between the 960 pro and 970 pro?
I bought most of my 970 pro 512GB 's for $100 new on ebay - one of the best OS drives for the money imo.
where?
970pro is much faster than the 960 pro
my laptop maxes out at 1650mb per second
I found a seller like this and made an offer for x for $100 each
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-970-PRO-512GB-NVMe-PCIe-M-2-2280-SSD-MZ-V7P512BW/142978577357 - YMMV , prices have gone up a bit lately
and they have a long warranty if worried about lifespan think its over 1200TB or 5 years
@plush crag thats the one i am looking at
970 pros (or any other higher end nvme drive) only really shine in heavy, mixed I/O
my laptop is a e7270
Many cheaper drives can hit the same, or sometimes higher sustained, sequential read , and sometimes write speeds
Honestly - that 500 GB WD black for $70 - or $450 when bundled with a 3900x is a pretty hot deal
i want something thats reliable and fast enough as the 960 evo
the pcie gen 3x2 really shouldnt hurt anything at all
like the 960 evo is 3200mb read
I have two 960 evo's - great drives, you really have to slam the drive with a ton of sustained write, or mixed i/o to justifiy the premium on the pro.
Personally - I value my time above all and the reliability/reputation that samsung nvme drives have for a relatively negligible premium sells it for me.
i am only getting 1650mb
3.2GB has no problem going into 16GB
but my 960 evo has 15tb total written to it
Real world performance often strays from sticker specs. As much hate as userbenchmark gets - I think it's a useful tool for comparing ballpark specs on ssd's.
and its a 250gb one
haha samsung drivs are pretty hard to wear out - even if you all but try https://i.imgur.com/mdRCNXQ.png
so what should i do?
Well, you certainly can't go wrong with https://www.newegg.com/samsung-970-pro-512gb/p/N82E16820147693
or try to get that one that u sent?
I'm personally comfortable hunting around on ebay and buying from sellers I expect to be reliable - but I think that's the buyer's preference - up to you.
and that seller that u sent me is he reliable to you?
its either that one or a 960 pro thats been used for 10 mins
or less then that
I haven't personally bought from that seller.
what about this one
I guess after doing some more research that pcei gen3x2 thing could be hindering the drive although I didnt think it would being it has such a large bandwidth
Ya, half the lanes will certainly half the bandwidth - but the "snappy" feeling you get from a drive like that is from various mixed/i/o or random 4k queue depth 1, single thread read speeds
yeah the performance doesnt equal the sum of the bandwidth as one would think
Seller seems ok to me, but I can't guarantee anything ofc
yea but what would you pay for it?
To get a ballpark idea, I always search for sold+ completed listings https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=960+PRO+512GB&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1
Find great deals on eBay for 960 PRO 512GB. Shop with confidence.
i was going to offer 70
No shame in lowballing - many sellers set an auto-reject limit, you have about 3 offers before it cuts you off.
but idk its either that or the 970 pro
If they get offended - it's their fault for not setting the auto reject price higher imo
basically it doesnt matter how wide the track is if the train is slow lol
SMART data - stored on the drive's chips can confirm total bytes read/written - you could shoot him a message asking for a screenshot.
Similar to the hwinfo screenshot I posted of my 960 evo
that seller that has the 970 pro said they couldnt show me becasue they dont have the equipment
so a 3rd party mustive tested it
I would probably just get a new one especially since you said you were concerned with endurance
and now that we know your speed is affected by the 3x2 having a fast drive doesnt really make as much sense
maybe like a good priced western digital blue one
the one with 500 in the name that doesnt stand for the capacity lol
it just sucks i cant get it to run at full speed
that is unfortunate
1500MB/s is still really fast
yea true
so apparently my e7270 isnt high end lol
even tho its a 7000 series ultrabook.........
why would a 1k gaming laptop get full speed but a 2.4k not
okey no samsung magicaian says 870mb read
why is it soo slow rn?
gets faster as it heats up
The nand memory likes being hot, it'll last longer, the controller, however, will throttle around ~80C or something.
That said - it's extremely hard to wear out any modern nvme or sata ssd before the end of it's useful life unless you really really try to.
Especially a samsung, be it an evo, pro, or w/e. People have tried haha.
yeah they dont have the best cooling solutions
heats up gets fast throttles rinse and repeat
so its a heat issue then?
its not really an issue
the only thing i changed is that i updated magican
see as it ramps up it will get faster and faster until it gets overwhelmed with heat and then it will slow
it has not moved from 40c
which is fine for most use cases. I imagine it was hotter when you got the faster result. and if you kept running the test the heat would increase as would the speed in your tests until it hits the throttle limit
no around same temp
not sure that is a large gap for randomness
what would cause it to slow down like that?
i tried restarting that did nothing
i was getting almost double the speed before
i just reran test now its at 1479 read and 1291 write
could it be an issue with the ssd?
how full is it?
only using 59gb out of 250
no issue there
okey
its gone up to 43c now
now this laptop has a cooling plate for the ssd but its not installed on mine
@outer bane the heatsink for it is made out of copper and it has thermal pads
Which is better Seagate computing 120 SSD or team gx2 ssd
@red jay what formfacter?
whats the fair price for a 970 evo plus?
i want a m.2 ssd that will last along time i have a 250gb 960 evo rn
Whether it be Samsung, HP, Silicon Power, Sabrent, Team, etc, they'll all last basically the same perceivable amount of time for a standard consumer
Thus there is no reason to only buy from Samsung
As they are usually very overpriced SSDs for standard consumers and should only be bought for professional workloads
my laptop only has 1 m.2 ssd slot
@deep wagon I got my 1tb 970 Evo plus for $299.99 from amazon
But that was like last november
you can get a drive that is 99% as good as the Evo for like half the price
and more storage
@deep wagon I've never seen the 7600p at a price worth it for a standard customer
So doubt it'd be good for you
so what drive do u recomend?
I bought a 240gb ssd and I know that I am going to need to upgrade soon, what size should I get
depends what you need it for but most people would get another 1-2tb
ssd or hdd depends on what is going on it
Just games
what formfactor?
2.5”
is it worth upgrading from a hybrid drive to a ssd
So I don't know much about pcie vs sata ssd's, but I know that I need more space. I have an x570 mobo (PCIE gen 4), but I don't know what to look for. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Do you need extremely fast storage for any reason?
How much space do you need? Do you plan to use the drive as a windows boot drive?
Here is what I have for storage: 1 tb ssd (860 evo), 4tb hdd, 3tb external hdd, and a 500 gb seagate ssd. I download a lot, play games, and edit videos/ photo's. Faster ssd's is on the verge of a MUST for me. @plush crag @minor sun
I doubt you'll even find much use in the speeds offered by a pcie 4.0 drive, but I do think you can benefit from pcie 3.0 nvme drives
Though the exact pcie 3.0 drive that would be good for you depends on prices and whatnot
What's your budget? (roughly)
No more than $200
For say, 1TB? Or 2TB?
(if only for 1tb, theres this https://www.newegg.com/sabrent-rocket-nvme-4-0-1tb/p/1Z4-00H3-00016)
but thats if you really really just want a bit more speed
Either way, its 4500 more speed than I got now, lol
$200 is pretty steep for 1tb lol
Ya, prices have fluctuated a bit lately - Intel 660p's at 2TB have sold for $185 in the past, I think Zack bought one at that price.
Slower drive ofc, but sometimes the shortcomings of QLC + a 3rd rate NAND controller don't really present issues when your drive is 2TB lol.
$150 for 860 evo, 1tb ssd... and $200 for 1 tb PCIE 4 gen.
Prices are weird.
And that $150 is actually marked down from $200
I'd definitely get the rocket over the 1TB 860 evo given current prices.
fwiw I have two of those evo's lol
Samsung stuff are expensive
Samsung seems to have the least amount of problems. Seagate is right behind them
Seagate has some drives are iffy
and I had to check it, but my corsair mp510 has a higher mean time between failure than the 970evo. While that doesn't mean too much, Samsung could be beaten on the reliability side.
The biggest reason not to buy pcie gen 4 is because of the bottle neck that it would have to applications and my GPU. I hav a 1080 gpu with a 3900x cpu. Thats already a bottleneck, lol. Again, I don't know much about the 4 gen pcie, but I am sure there is a hefty bottleneck
Why would there be a bottleneck..?
lemme find a pic of x570 chipset
on top of the 16 pcie 4.0 lanes dedicated the GPU, there are 12 lanes that you can use for a NVMe drive
Not really 12, just 4 from the CPU directly then another 4 through the chipset link.
The chipset will multiplex the 4 lanes of pcie 3.0 in order to feed anything connected to it with (up to) 4 lanes of pci 3.0 worth of bandwidth.
In summary - x570 + a ryzen 3rd gen can provide 16 cpu lanes for a GPU , 4 lanes dedicated to NVME drive(s) + an additional 4 lanes that are split among all the chipset connected devices
marketing is confusing..
Anyways, theres 24 total lanes iirc, 16 to graphics, 4 to chipset, 4 to NVMe drives. And the 4 chipset lanes allows for more SATA stuff, correct?
Yes - the 4 chipset lanes can deliver up to 4 lanes of 3.0 speed at any one instant to any component connected to the chipset
Alright thanks.
Rather - all of the chipset devices share that 4 lane, 3.0 speed "pipe" that talks to the cpu
It allows more SATA than PCIE? @minor sun
Or it just allows for more sata than before
?
You said, "Anyways, theres 24 total lanes iirc, 16 to graphics, 4 to chipset, 4 to NVMe drives. And the 4 chipset lanes allows for more SATA stuff, correct?"
Sata doesnt equal pcie, right?
Anything sata will share the chipset's uplink to the cpu
And what will the pcie do?
chipset lanes is for SATA, networking, USB, PCIe (secondary x1/x4/x8/x16 lanes for GPU/whatever as well as NVMe), soundchip, etc
So using chipset lanes you can get more SATA ports or more NVMe drives, etc
Whats a good storage system for under 250
as in a standalone system only for storage? You can probably get away with just buying like a portable hard drive or portable ssd @worthy glen
No for like a pc
What do you expect to do? Run three GPUs or smth?
Maybe 3 overclocked 2080tis
ya know, with the kinda work loads expected for a 3900x, I was expecting at least 32gb or ram
@vestal reef i got it as a gift
Eh, three OCed 2080Ti is pushing it. But three stock 2080Ti + 3900x is feasible
@worthy glen What specific PSU model?
just cuz it's 80+ gold 1200w doesnt mean it is good
alright, that's pretty good then
Lol
It does suck to see people get 1200w PSUs but bad ones
just hoping you didnt get hooked into that
i got it as a gift so i know its overkill but i didnt pay for it and its good soo
Aight
Can you use 2 SSDs, like an M.2 and sata combo? Or does it have to be an ssd+hdd combo?
You can do that afaik
if you have the ports to do it, it probably works
Is there any way to move Windows to my SSD without using a drive cloner or reinstalling Windows?
Not that I'm aware of
are there any software drive cloners that can selectively copy programs?
Selectively copy programs? At that point, you might just want to reinstall everything
AFAIK cloning can only clone whole partitions
yeah ill prob do it the hard way
Big SSD specs spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B27_j9NDPU3cNlj2HKcrfpJKHkOf-Oi1DbuuQva2gT4/edit#gid=0
its already in pinned
lol oh
rip

okey so i have a 970 pro 1tb how tf did i use 443.09 gb in 1 hour and its going up help
showing that on magician?
Use windirstat to see what's using space.
crystal disk is pretty accurate
samsung magician is samsungs program
was it a new drive?
because it wont forget any previous usage
and just because you only have 44gb stored on there doesnt mean its not constantly reading and writing over data but that seems like way too much to me as well
yea i msged samsung idk tho
might download samsung magician and see what it says just to compare
https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/magician/ downloads are at the bottom of the page
LOL thats actually normal I am an idiot
For some reason I was thinking terabytes not gigabytes
having written and read 443g is quite normal especially if you installed windows or games on it
yeah its normal no big deal
if that was tb instead of gb like I thought at first that would be a big deal 😉
really?
oh yeah
as long as the ssd is thats ok
from what i can tell it is
it might be slightly bent
i think thats the plate on the back
you should care if it's dramless
what he said
at that price idek
if you can go 60 theres this for 480gb
https://www.amazon.com/Team-Group-480GB-Internal-T253TD480G3C101/dp/B075JMG7TM/
storage prices are wack rn because virus
Or $41 for 240gb, $65 for the 500GB version
https://www.amazon.com/TEAMGROUP-T-Force-Vulcan-Internal-SSD/dp/B07XD14L51/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords="team%2Bvulcan%2Bssd"&qid=1585811266&sr=8-1&th=1
anyone know how to remove a format to an HHD and recover the data on it?
hey everyone
M.2 (PCIe 2.0 x4)
what is the FASTEST drive that I can use that supports this specificaiton of my motherboard?
Pcie 2.0...
Lol
@misty cobalt mainboard model?
i need some kind of help im looking for storage where i can put my games
but are there HDDs that are good at those?
I personally like shhd
@heady raven Mainboard model is https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/970-PRO-GAMING-AURA/
how to get infinite storage
take your sata 3 cable
connect it to pc
and connect the sata 3 cable in the air
and done you have unlimited air storage
Cloud
Thats how Apple does it
But that costs money
I bought a micro SD card for 47 cents
more like that's how google does it
And apple
ehh, i never use cloud on apple products, it's pretty useless
on google you don't really have a choice whether to use cloud or not
iCloud is like throwing a potato at a tortoise and expecting it to plant it
Lmao
Uhh ok
I like that analogy
Kinda weird
¯_(ツ)_/¯
It's entirely accurate
It took like a month to transfer 3GB of stuff from my phone to the cloud
that is for you to take up with your ISP
lol
Hehe
That is true
There is still no meaningful feedback when transferring
Or at least, was
Any tips whether https://www.newegg.com/crucial-p1-1tb/p/N82E16820156199?Item=N82E16820156199
OR

Does it matter?
Same thing with different sticker
Thanks!
welcome
I wonder if someone could recommend me HDD? I am using SSD for my games and stuff, but I was thinking to get a regular one, for general storage - movies but maybe a game - if I would be running it through VM? In 200$ budget? Bigger the better I think - but I dont understand it much. 😄
Get a 10TB WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf
i mean, if he WANTS to drop $200 on storage
but its unnecessary for "general storage"
The max is 200, but I think Id be alright with 2 of these.
gives a 200 budget: is handed more than expected $51 solution
@upper quiver I mean uits not the most reliable
its pretty eh for reliability
but not a cause for concern
Seagate hasnt FULLY recovered since the floods
reliable and cheap storage
you can get reliable storage
you can get cheap storage
if you want both, this is it
especially for generic, consumer use
Did I do this correctly? Does it NEED to be completely flat against the mobo, or should there be a little air space from when you push it down?
yeah thats wrong lol
Oof that makes me uncomfortable
theres this thing in your motherboard box
I can feel the tension on the pcb lol
Lmao
the manual will answer many question you didnt even realize you had
also, it will help give you a better understanding of whats on the board itself
its a good read, 10/10
but I need to figure out how to get some stuff from my other sata crappy ssd m.2 to this newer better m.2 ssd
because I got no second m.2 screw
hold it with your finger
might just do that
Tape
So my manual cam with little youtube scans, and I followed the video
But sassy, do you know how the system would work if theres 2 windows systems on 2 different ssds?
i think you dont even need to hold it in place for it to work
it will boot from the drive it has always boot from
the bios is set to look for the boot loader on a specific drive
interesting
last time I tried to hold it down, it just didn't show up in bios or anything
lights on the sata m.2 were on
but nothing detected it
odd, is it in the sata combo slot?
wdym
if there are sata devices plugged into the marked sata port, the m.2 auto disables
This is the screw my mobo came with for the m.2 slot
yea
Im following the manual, I plug it into its slot at an angle and then screw it down and there is still the little slant.
screw it down with what?
the standoff, or the screw?
that in the picture is the standoff, it goes under the ssd
the motherboard came with a tiny screw, in a tiny bag
Hmmm, i didnt see the tiny screw when I went through everything
K, never mind, i found it
Like this
Looks better
Awesome thank you.
Np lol
You get flamed more in the PC world than you do in the Fighting world.
Lmao
Me:never done this before
Martial artists: here, I'll gladly show you the way.
PC guys: YOU NEED TO BE A PRO RIGHT OFF THE BAT, ASSHOLE!!
You're paying for the martial arts tho...
Also nobody said you had to be a pro he just said read the manual
@vestal reef not him. But , ive had some others 🤬🤬😤
Oh ya there's definitely people that'll be rude. Especially online cuz they're protected from you, the martial artist 😂
I also pickup heavy ass weights, a lot. 🤡
Get those GAINS
@vestal reef The tiny ass m.2 screw made me break a sweat. Like Sausage fingers trying to thread a needle 🤣🤣
Lmao. I once dropped a mobo screw down the cable management holes in my case and it took me like 15 mins to get it out
what sata 1TB ssd should I get?
@vestal reef 🤣🤣.......... Hulk smash!!(thats $600 worth of parts)... No hulk smash.
I dont get it lol
