i left a comment here trying to flesh out a bit more context about the ergonomic troubles we were encountering ourselves. it's been a few weeks since i had this context paged into my head, and i'm doing my best to summarize work that a colleague was doing, so hopefully nothing there is too off base! 🙈

Thanks for the comment, was good to capture that desire to also easily flip to non-fips version
djc came in with the wise suggestion of doing it all with feature flags that only show up on fips versions... i don't see any reason that wouldn't work
