@wary gorge you can do a bunch without a ton of custom design slots. A market place: you can use the designs from sable for the stalls. I did a sewing area. An art display. And I didn’t use custom designs for any of those

@gentle pecan zen fencing for Japanese aesthetic, simple for western, corral/country for more rural, bamboo for tropical, etc.. hedges look good around anything imo and lattice fencing isn't bad either. It really depends on what your surroundings and villager houses look like! :)

@woven drift use custom patterns or paths to "cut" the place, use dividers or furniture that can "separate" the space, when its too open its best to create smaller areas like a seating area. Think of it like an open plan house or a yard where there are no walls but its still has smaller areas where there are rugs or separated by a divider

@woven drift im not telling you break it up into small places, but to use methods in real life decorating to not make feel liminal and empty looking, by creating centrepieces, seating places, and use of paths and custom patterns to visually break it up not physically. Take the Versailles gardens for exampl, though it wide open it uses paths to break it up and make it look more grand than a just some grass

It matches at the bottom, but not the top, despite the tiles alternating correctly. @manic sigil So it appears as though I've botched the grid when viewed from above, but when looked at normally, it alternates correctly.

Just an odd trick of perspective caused by how the game sort of tilts higher elevations.

@dense marten well looking at the island you just started my advice to terraform some mountains unless you are going for a plain island look or some rivers, and if you're not gonna make a neighborhood then spread out the villagers and give them their own theme or yard and add roads connecting everything

@dense marten I personally worked my way out from my entrance. So first thing you should think about is if you want a neighborhood. Here are some layouts pictured. I personally spread my villagers out to give them their own yard as shown in the second and third pic. Spreading them out allowed for bigger yards to fit their personality or colors that they are. But in general, slowly work your way out from your entrance and fill your island with things you want!

Also, Great tip for cottagecore islands: Its will look a lot better if you spread out your villager houses instead of grouping them together, Not only will you have a lot space to decorate the outside of there houses, but it will add to the natural-ness of the island, This is what I did on my island.

@woven drift you can also move only part to the beach to clear the area you want to put them and then put pathing down to outline where you want them and slowly move them all there.

It saves a lot of bells if you only have to move a few since it costs 50k each time.

@sour lintel If you want your villagers naturally scattered and your island is pretty natural/fairycore/cottagecore, you should start terraforming the area first (i.e. if the area is going to be a forest, lake area, marsh, etc) around a 4x4 space saved for the villager house. That way it will feel like the elements are naturally surrounding the villager house 🙂

@desert meadow it really depends on how much space you have and what kinds of furniture you want to use to decorate. 6 of my villagers have 7x6 size yards and the others have either themed areas or just a large space in a more natural habitat. Here's some dimensions you can see and try out 🙂
