My approach is to pick a zone, be flexible with your plans and take the time to get each 'view' right before moving on. Also don't start doing any major 'construction' till you get Terraforming. It'll make your life a lot easier

@unreal nebula iirc, it's to do with trees competing for light when they're at their 'minimum distance' from each other

• If they're all planted at the same time they all grow ok. *(usually)
• If they're planted separately, the adjacent larger trees will block saplings from progressing.
  You could plant them elsewhere to let them grow and then move them back afterwards
