alright typing so I can remember myself later : island planning. thinking first level for main plaza, camping, "forest", flowers. second level : one side half villagers, with a shop. the other side half others, a shop. Top level : museum because blathers deserve to be on top . 4 rivers surrounding the two " mini villages", to finally join again for 2 separates streams (since my rivers' end are on the left & right. need some place for a pond or two. maybe different themes for the two sides : japanese would be easy way out, i'll try to think of something else. maybe assigns certain fruits trees to certain parts

The layout doesnt matter at all. Its about tastes. What really matters is not having mountains in the middle of nowhere. Apart from that, decoration and paths can fix almost everything

I mean, I think you should experiment and if you don’t want to experiment on the actual map because it takes too long, take a pic and then draw over it and experiment that way. Or experiment in your head until you have a rough idea of where everything should be and then plan the rivers from there. Or if you want any specific scenery (ex. A zen bridge going over a river with trees)

@woven drift Hm... It appears too simplistic and structured, and it'd be boring to walk around unless you went for an industrial look. (...but if that's what you're planning to do, it'll be fine!) You likely need to focus less on how the layout is structured and more on how each area will feel and what makes those areas interesting. The layout should be the frame for the concept of your town, not the main concept itself, otherwise it'll only look good on the minimap.

Doesn't really matter too much, since they usually just spawn anywhere anyways. I've completely boxed up a house before, but the villager spawned in the plaza the next day

Villager AI doesn't acknowledge or care about your map layout

They walk around, teleport to where they want to go when off-screen, then perform an action; like sitting down, talking to another villager or using furniture

It's notable that they do spend more time around their house than other areas though, so if you put homes close together then that may lead to villagers interacting with each other more

They're common in open-air markets to protect goods from the rain, so you could make it larger and put some umbrellas near the tables in the center and over the cardboard boxes

A lot of people are putting theirs on Cliffs, I have mine on the beach. For aesthetics I'd say the beach, for space for a backyard then do a cliff or an empty space
