Haven’t played it either, but its supposed to be a nice, relaxing, laid back life sim. You can customize your home and town however you want. Its supposed to be a charming game. You can even play for a very short time a day

it's very calming with the weather effects, and there isn't a tv service to predict the weather like in harvest moon games or sdv, so its a nice surprise to start your game up and it's a nice rainy day for you to walk around and hear the rain and run errands for people and make money

It's more of a relaxing game than just overall fun. If you are still hesitant I'd recommend watching some Let's play channels that did animal crossing let's play like ChugaConroy in which he started his village and watch him progress his town and you will get an idea of how the game is like. Watching him 5 years ago is what kinda incentivesed me to try Animal Crossing but didn't had a 3Ds, but I now that NH is coming I might enjoy it.
The 1rst Animal Crossing I played was City Folk, but I didn't really understood how you progress. All I did was Sell Coconuts to pay all the mortage, get the coolest clothing and furniture and that's it by time skipping.

I have a wacom tablet for drawing but I haven't done much with it

yeah I got a little wacom tablet but with how I work I only use it if I want lines that emulate hand drawing. Often end up going over them manually with a mouse adjusting each line anyway.
