it's turning out the culprit on the subaru is the steering joint, and not the steering rack
greased up the joint today and the issues went away almost immediately, and almost completelt
tho it now has a massive deadspot at the center, and it does stiffen up every now and again, especially when turning right, so the joint is looking to definitely be knackered,

they're out of stock
and no longer in production
so eneded up ordering the cleaner looking of the 3 used joints on eBay right now
i have one, they are the same as rhd and its good condition

Got some angled gauge plates for when the subaru is back, make the gauges point at me slightly so I can read them better since they're not in an ideal spot. Would be even better if they were angled up a bit too. Don't exactly know how I'm supposed to secure these on tho, theres no clips on the back or anything
oh and that reminds me, @prime saddle that switch I made a bit too long and it bows in the middle, and it's a pain to put into the hole here's the slightly shortened model if you wanna print it for yourself
not test printed this one yet myself so 🤷 but it's i think 2mm shorter between the pegs so should sit better

So, turns out the driver side cylinder head had the wrong version camshafts in it... And it wasnt tightened down properly... And it had the wrong internal bolts in...

So those two camshafts not only are shagged, but are the wrong ones. So I need the correct ones now. Fortunately the head itself is OK from what the engine man could see so far and he'll source me the correct camshafts

that's the consesnsus between 3 subaru mechanics from two different subaru garages at this point.
We're suspecting one of the previous owners may have put a newage steering column in, because both the old and the replacement joints and steering racks I got are the same sizes, that leaves just the steering column to be the culprit, and rather than trying to source a new column and taking the dash apart to replace it, we're just gonna throw shit at the wall and see if a longer newage steering joint works.

No, gonna just get a base tune for 95 on it, and then later on when i upgrade the fuel rails, pump and turbo gonna do a power tune

so am I. first tune is basically gonna be a extra-safe economy tune that I can use any fuel with for the trip to romania and back
and then later on I'm gonna want to get a nice big turbo (got the one that scoobyclinic sells in my watchlist), top-feed fuel rails with big injectors, an rcm fuel pump and run thicker wires and a relay for the pump itself since the factory wiring is too thin for 300+ lph pumps and tends to melt the plugs
so once thats on the car I'll go for an actual power tune, with switchable maps for 95 and 99

Honestly? Just don't. That's waaay too big for 300 hp. You won't have torque down low and if your goal is 300hp, torque is typically the best part of it
yeah but your car isn't exactly a daily driver... you take it out what, once every few weeks for a rag around a dirt track and then it's back in the garage, I fully intent to use mine on a decently regular basis, including some very long, sustained driving roadtrips
I'd say you'll get a lot more out of a VF34. It'll easily take you to 300hp with just 1 bar of boost, it's roller bearing so it'll spool fast and they're easy to find, used, new and rebuilt.

We came up with a different approach. A keyring with a 2 pin connector that's shorted with a resistor. Then we define an analog input in the car that will only allow the car to start if there's a specific voltage in the pin.

the means to disable that are in the car, they just have to short the connectors
In theory yes, but you'd have to know to plug a potentiometer in it and find the very specific resistance it allows the car to start with
The resistor is in the keyring so shorting the leads won't help
it's a slightly better version ofa hidden kill switch, but like the kill switch, once found, can be fettled with enough till you get a result
You'd have to bypass the ECU password and find that specific condition that prevents the start
Being able to replicate the specific resistance is very unlikely, since the window is so narrow. And that would require the thief to understand to try that in the first place and have a potentiometer with the correct scale with them
You can also change shit on the fly if needed and troubleshoot
was debating getting a tablet mount in the car to just leave the tablet on for diag display when driving , sort of like that digital dash you've got
The bad thing the tablet is that if they open it they'll find which ECU the car has
Though they'd find that shit by enabling BT
If you take the tablet with you they'll get no clue as to what the car is powered by

so they'd need to
- obtain the tablet
- unlock the tablet
- connect to the ECU
- unlock the ECU
- disable anti-theft or download the functional map onto the ECU
If it's at the mall parking lot, it'll probably just be disable the anti theft
If the cars been sitting parked for a while while I'm away with work for a week or two, it will be download the functional map
this all takes me about 30 seconds to do btw, so it's not exactly an inconvenience
Yeah they can always wipe the ECU but good luck getting a functional tune on it
especially since half the factory engine sensors are either missing or replaced with universal aftermarket ones that require calibration sheets to be put in

To be honest I don't really know much about alu welding beyond basics, but there is the fact that cast is usually more porous and alu is very sensitive for any dirt so cleaning it can be a pain
But if it is a good cast and the welder knows what they're doing, great
or if you're like my friend you can weld the metal hinge to your aluminium bonnet and call it a day out of pure ignorance and stubbornness
just crank the welder up to "YEET" and go at it
and you know what... that welds held up without problems for the past 5 years or so

We have a ram mount copy motorcycle mount for the codriver tripmeter phone, it's been holding surprisingly well. Although with the 4 points of contact it can be annoying to position the phone so that it doesn't interfere with any of the side buttons

I find the more important bit to a good phone holder is a solid arm and base rather than the actual bit that holds the phone itself
In my legacy I had a nice plastic plate that was just stuck onto the plastic dash above the heater in the middle and just turned that one off and had the phone on one of those tension mounts. That worked for me but I didn’t get charging out of it

yeah windows space is what I was struggling on the impreza as well, with the nav screen where the dash cubby used to be and the gauges on the A-pillar, didn't leave any room for a suction cup mount, so had to go down low by the center console

yeah but everyone knows subaru bolts go down by 2 mm 90% of the time, but in this case, yes the bolt diameter itself is 22mm
you drill 2 on the firewall, 2 on the lower side chassis mount near all the wiring and 2 on the frame rails on each side of the engine
firewalls are 22mm the rest are 18mm, 24mm bokt head and 20mm bolt head.
well its no oem but still like i said 90% of subaru bolts have a 2mm difference
10mm are usually m8, 12 are m10, 14 are m12 yada yada
Step too low, 12mm is M8, 14mm is M14 and so on. 10mm is for M6.

Never had it but I think on mine it connected to the inlet pipe running under the manifold
The factory elbow where the maf sits has a port on the bottom that plums into the evap piping

One goes to the pipe under the manifold, one goes to the evap solenoid (which I think mine might be dead because I'm seeing it a bit wet and stinking of petrol) and one goes to the inlet pipe

also, the maf delete is turning out to be a two pipe jobbie instead of a single pipe jobbie as
- the 45 degree elbow I have doesn't have long enough legs
- the angle of the airbox is just ever so slightly off to where it needs a second bend
- the inlet pipe is too small for the size of silicone hose, and it's sitting loose.
so now I need to wait till like tuesday/wednesday for the stuff I need to arrive
at least the RTV should fully cure by then, fingers crossed I get no leaks, I really don't want to take this shit apart again so soon.

We intend to run as short IC piping as possible, so the turbo side will enter the fender right in front of the wheel arch. The hood vent is surprisingly far back, so in order to fit a box for the filter the box will have to be so far front it'll barely overlap the vent
The deed is done, but I'm not really happy with it. Gonna order a long aluminium tube and use that as the main body instead and just have the silicone as joiners rather than being the main body of the tube...
I wonder if anyone ever even reads that k&n sticker or just ignores it and rips off the filter with extreme prejudice if you took it to a non performance supporting shop

Yeah I swapped back to a non k&n filter when I had one fitted before every service and always said don’t bother changing the filter. I wasn’t ever charged for a filter but a few times they still swapped it so I just got random new filters that I’d never use
i feel like there is better options out there than k&n, i dont understand the benefit iver a washable vs normal air filter. so i personally would also check it
