Build yourself version is only for non-commercial use.
It also often goes on large discount.
??? I just checked with chatgpt:
You can use a self-compiled version of Aseprite to create assets for a commercial project. Here’s how it works:
Source Code License – Aseprite’s code is released under GPL v3. You’re allowed to download it, modify it, and compile your own version. The GPL rules only apply to the software itself, not to the content you create with it.
Your Artwork – All sprites, animations, and other assets you make in Aseprite are fully yours. You can sell them, use them in games, or include them in commercial projects like The Brothers Crawn. The GPL does not require you to release your game assets.
Restrictions – You cannot sell or redistribute your compiled Aseprite program itself unless you comply with GPL rules. But using your compiled version to make commercial art is perfectly legal.
✅ In short: self-compiling Aseprite is fine for commercial use, and everything you create with it is yours.
youre not allowed to sell your compiled aseprite .exe but you can commercially use the assets you create
LibreSprite is a free and open source program for creating and animating your sprites.
Yes, you can apparently use it for commercial purposes https://www.aseprite.org/faq/#if-aseprite-source-code-is-available-how-is-that-you-are-selling-it
Don't trust what LLM tells you, always verify.
However, it receives a lot of updates and it's quite a process to built it each time, requires you to install a bunch of tools too. I did it at some point before buying it.
You can just use LibreSprite I linked above, its a fork of Aseprite while it was still GNU license, its already compiled n ready to work
Aseprite had quite a few significant quality of life and tools updates. It seems it was forked at least 10 years ago?
yeah its a bit old
