Hey, I'm working on a game where you're on a nature reserve island and you must give medicine to 100 wild animals. Beavers, badgers, bears, monkeys, tigers... It's a bit of an open world, there's photography, some gadgets, crafting, chasing, and partners giving you intel on your radio to help find them all!

I'd really like to hear some thoughts on how it feels, so please DM me if you'd like to try it and tell me what you think.

this looks cute as hell

#

i kinda like the juxtaposition of laying something i read as a landmine in front of the fox den then setting it off with a detanator when the fox comes out

#

but then it's cured and a little heart pops up

#

a heal 'em up

Thanks, yes it is a heal-em-up!

I've taken a detour this week to implement controller support and get it on the Steam Deck. There are a decent amount of UI screens, so it's taken some time.
But now I can hand the game to people in my life and they can test it, so I'm happy about that.

I had no reward idea connected to filling out an animal's "Research" bar for a long time. As my wife couldn't figure out how to use an item, she said I should allow players to try it out on a funny plush version of an animal.

Now I have a reward item for fully researching each species!!!

The reward item isn't ready yet, there's a bug where it contains a copy of itself so you can open it recursively forever :[

I'm filling out the jungle artwork, but honestly I can't see if it looks good or not :[
I've been staring at the game for too long

There was a trend on Twitter to make a 20 second trailer with little explanation. So I made one!

cool, add a interface and a clear objective

#

the game looks really cool, great job!

It usually does have an interface with quest markers and stuff, I've just implemented the option to switch them all off

I've been working on the rain!
I really wanted to do the rain through a screen-space effect, reading camera depth, world position, and streaming worley noise downwards. That turned out to be really awkward and difficult though, so this rain is just about 400 billboard particles flying down, and about 100 foggy steam ones on the ground.

I wanted my game to feel like it takes place in everyday real life. So I decided to make artwork for 20 individual books on the bookshelf.
It's kind of a hassle, but since this is the room you start in, I know a decent percentage of players will walk over and stare at each book.

It's tempting to make them all funny, weird gags, but I really need to strap myself down and be normal.

I moved some sliders and accidentally put the player's house in a cloud today.
Damn this looks awesome though, maybe I should keep it!

If you're reading this and you'd like to test the build btw, please just poke me and I'll send you a Steam code!

I noticed that testers always wanted to CAPTURE the animals in my game, and take them back to their BASE.
That's definitely not what it's about, you're supposed to just give them medicine and watch them trot away healthy. It's not a poaching game, I'd hate that.
But this kept coming up, and I couldn't deny that Pokémon, Ape Escape, Monster Hunter and MGSV are big inspirations. So I need to TRY OUT teleporting cured animals to a kind of safety zone.
I wrote more design notes on Bsky (https://bsky.app/profile/tombrien.bsky.social/post/3mf7qgzjmwc2p) but long-story-short is my gut feeling says don't but my head says more people will like this. So I should carefully, carefully keep it in. Probably.
