#Unity lays off staff and axes Behavior team

Behaviour feature effected
what is unity's behavior? tbh, this is the 1st time I ever heard of it
maybe that's why they were fired, not many people were using it or aware of it?
I think it was definitely an "establishing area"
not a "production proven technology"
it was still interesting imho, but not totally devastating to lose really.
I was the newest official AI behavior package for Unity. It was a behaviour tree, but with extra features
Plus a resignation

I just sent my resignation letter today at Unity.
Unfortunately I won't see the completion (or not) of the migration of Unity from Mono to CoreCLR that I first prototyped almost 8 years ago.
I'm still proud of the work accomplished, Burst initially and then the .NET tech group that I have created and led for the past 3 years.
I still have a n...
This is honestly kinda shocking, given that it seemed that the company was course correcting.
But with this, i'm doubtful about what's going on again

equivalent of UE Blackboard
seems promising for designers and newbs
What is UE blackboard? 😅
visual scripting for designing AI
its pretty popular among UE Dev, check it out
apparently the coreCLR lead resigned? is this bad news for the coreCLR transition
No
why did he resign?
i hope coreCLR wont be worse off because of this
I really hope so, too, because that's one of my most anticipated improvements to Unity.
Please don't drop Behaviour, just keep it going
Tell that to the execs who fired the team
You may have seen the news that my project at Unity has been discontinued and my team is being cut. I am now looking for a new role!
I'm also interested in learning about fundraising to start a small, sustainable, passionate and ethical games studio. If you're an investor that can stand behind that, let's talk and I can prove to you that I have...
There's plenty of LinkedIn posts about the layoffs, majority of them reference unity behaviour explicitly.
This post specifically is a bit chilling if it's the case, and mentions some of the most talented individuals let go.
Well, it's been a good time with Unity. Honestly, loved it. No hard feelings. I will admit some shock and perplexity ... but you've got plans, I imagine ;)
9 years? Something like that, it's a bit blurry, since the first several months I was in Brussels, then Austin, TX, then Montreal, now Denver. Quite a ride, so many great opportunities and e...
They also sacked the co-founder of pro-builder, who also worked on improving the Editor & Scene UI.
which one? gabriel?
You can just go to the thread about it on Discussions too
https://discussions.unity.com/t/an-update-on-behavior/1598451
Given the poor support of pro-builder, i'd be surprised if they don't drop that package too these days
Things like these are why people rely more on third party assets than the official ones from Unity, with some exceptions like Cinemachine.
Again, i'm not sure what's happening inside Unity these days.
Forgot to mention, i wish the best for the people who got laid off.
This may answer your question.
So real talk now that the team behind Behaviour has been laid off (RIP seriously), is there a solid alternative on the Asset Store that is preferrably free of charge?
You can keep using the Behaviour package
Thanks!
You can still use the behavior package, just keep in mind that there won't be any support (unless other team takes the package, though it's unlikely)
As for alternatives, I could only find a couple on GitHub
https://github.com/ashblue/fluid-behavior-tree
https://github.com/thekiwicoder0/UnityBehaviourTreeEditor
Huh, that's a surprise, the package just got recently updated
https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com.unity.behavior@1.0/changelog/CHANGELOG.html
Turns out the behaviour package will still be updated, though clearly with a different team
https://discussions.unity.com/t/an-update-on-behavior/1598451/156
Either this was the plan all along or they realised the big mistake they made and course corrected
Either way, it seems that the behavior package is still viable for production, no need to worry about being deprecated (for now, Unity is still a wild card regarding packages)
Still mourning for the new terrain team
same
Also I hope the new terrain tools get also released eventually
Yeah, that still pisses me off to this day.
They had the chance to create something that at best could rival Gaia..... And they throw it to the trash before it could even have a chance
Seems like we wont see it :/ was extremely hyped
No, we won't sadly 😕
World building should definitely get more attention form unity, terrains are not even supporting GPU resident drawer
Never liked gaia, hoped for smth more like microverse
Christ almighty really?
"the reason why it doesn't work on terrain objects is because the terrain ingests them into "prototypes" this is a different format to " game objects" and they then lack the requirements (Mesh Renderer)"
got this from reddit
