#mildly less strict residents chat

any chance the #🗣️┃resident-chat could be a bit more consistent then? i've been here for a good while and still dont have the role lol
would also make sense since this server gets linked a lot in the live streams
i feel like there's a more consistent and mod friendly way of handling an off-topic channel
mildly less strict residents chat
We semi regularly add new people who are consistently contributing meaningfully. They may just pop up on our radars or are recommended by other residents. As there's absolutely no rush to add people, and as we've had to remove people who haven't been a good fit, there's no reason to relax our process
that seems fair. i see no reason to not keep it. although i think it'd be a good idea to have a separate channel with a similar premise, just less strict. a more casual game dev chat, while still keep it restricted to people who are generally active in the server. maybe you could be more strict with the moderation too.
i know there's #1180170818983051344 although a lot of people like to give less professional, one shot, updates. just like a quick update of like "hey i got my rotation working". people also like sharing cool assets or videos that they've found. this server though doesn't have any easy way for users to share things like that. this server is more of a help forum than an actual unity discussion server.
jackson also has mentioned the server a few times on stream. i think the youtube/twitch channels could do a lot better, if you helped to cultivate the community in a better, more inclusive, way.
there's also the easy solution of working with and giving a !command to a server like (dyno didn't like this link) (i just pulled the third server that came up in the discovery list after searching "unity")
(PS: i cant actually see how many people have the resident role. as far as i know, only 5(+?) people have the role. the resident system may be working just fine. i dont really have the data to back that up)
If you think that a general off-topic chat would improve inclusivity, I'd like to introduce you to 'The Internet.'
Seriously, though, inability to stay on-topic seems to be HIGHLY correlated to peeps who end up getting evicted from the server for other reasons, and a general off topic channel would encourage that.
well, the whole point of inclusivity is making sure as many people as possible are included. keeping only a small group of people able to chat is the near antithesis of inclusivity
although maybe you're right. im just not sure why specifically this server doesn't have a more casual chat. almost every other popular discord server has one. including discord servers this server works with (the blender server)
maybe its just because this server doubles as a help forum. or because unity has to keep it more moderated, due to how unity is as a company.
even the other unity discord server, which is near identical to this one, has an off topic channel. the only difference between this server and that one is that (well, other one isn't owned by unity, but also) the server is about 1/4th the size. but even so that's still 25k members to moderate.
well, the other server gave me a pretty good argument about not having one for this server. i'll close the thread (unless there's any reason for me to re-open it)
