#Gatekeeping new members

Can we please have some kind of gate keeping for new members of this server. Every time there is some kind of drama the server is flooded with people who just come here to troll and flame. This is extremely disruptive to the normal working of the server and benefits no one.

If there was some kind of gate keeping this behaviour would be very much reduced

I feel like there could be more strictness in terms of what is accepted from newer members. If people clearly join just to act like an idiot then I would not even give it a chance and kick/ban immediately.

#

Not sure if gatekeeping helps, assuming you mean some sort of process to join?

Even a (for example) 3 hour mute upon joining would help as most of the trolls seem to have the attention span of a knat

I don't know about that lol, sure, some people probably come to troll. However, others like me who are longtime members of the Unity community, but first time members to this server, came here because we saw something online happening in a community that we care about and now we're here to show our support for all of the people who've been banned lol.

After reading through all the drama and seeing the dozens of bans I'm fearful I'll be next just because I haven't been active in this discord before. I feel I almost have to specify that I'm a community manager of a decently sized unity-game dev community discord to justify my connection to the engine lol. I don't think we want to gate keep any more than that.

Also, a flood of users isn't exactly a bad thing. I'm an active member of the Unity community but wasn't in this discord before seeing an article online about it. There's pros and cons and it seems like the moderators are pretty on top of banning spammers anyways lol

Maybe as a temporary measure until the reddit brigade is over, but that already seems to be dying down

# wet wharf I don't know about that lol, sure, some people probably come to troll. However, ...

Not sure where you get the idea that you are at risk of getting kicked or banned just for being new. I have seen enough of the controversy and how people are banned. I can assure you that the people that got kicked or banned during this period had no reason to be here and just joined to stir the pot and/or to insult the moderators without giving constructive criticism.

This server is very strict and straight to the point, but that doesn't mean that you are at risk to be banned just because you might not be using the server correctly as a new user.

This server is for helping and being helped. You are free to take part as a new user.

  • If you don't use it for that and instead post off-topic talk, you will be informed of the server rules and all is good.
  • If you don't use it for that and instead start brigading, trolling or otherwise insulting, you will quickly be kicked, muted or banned.

This is how it has always been. Perhaps this is unclear from the many kicks, bans and mutes happening to users which brings out a lot more negativity than usual. It still very much applies, though.

I will just say - every new person I've seen get banned here on their first post has 1000% deserved it.

Also, the same applies to having a flood of users join. You might not agree on sanctions being made, but the fact is still that the majority of people joining currently just join for the controversy, and most just proceed to troll.

They then go to Reddit and say "I got banned for introducing myself!" And then conveniently don't mention the fact that they said "I'm here for the drama" or called fogsight a slur and then they get a million upvotes because reddit is allergic to context

#

If you're new and you're actually contributing, you're fine

I didn't even come from reddit lol. I came from a random news article website that popped up on my home feed on my phone

The image never mattered for the past 5 years, so I don't see why it matters now what other people think of moderators. Also, I'm fairly sure the person has long been unbanned and Fogsight apoligised for his actions.

I understand it might not be the nicest image, but take it from the active user sin here that moderation has been fine (which in my case has been since 2019) and they are doing a pretty damn good job

The article didn't make any accusations. It showed the screenshots of the original back and forth

People are not getting banned for posting actual unity related messages and just being new

wet wharf

You're opining about a source I didn't even provide

It would be more logical if people did the opposite and listed all the things Fogsight did wrong, and I have yet to see that

wet wharf
#

Lol, you know I asked for the link of Fog apologising for their actions

#

That's silly to think I meant 5 years worth of moderation

Oh, in that case give me a moment

How is this that?

And no, we cannot gatekeep new members. We'll continue to ban anyone who comes here hurling insults and slurs as usual.

Just FYI, the administrators are looking into this in general so it would be nice if people wait for that

wet wharf

My only worry is that this will just get swept under the rug, it's already been a few days so makes me wonder if anything will get done at all

#

But I gotta have faith and let cogs turn, not make too much noise

novel idol

I would rather like to think it's taken rather serious if they don't come with a direct statement but rather think of it for a few days

Also, just to give my 2 cents, I think this whole situation could have been handled a lot better from the other side as well. Instead of making a post of Reddit to stir this, they could have appealed instead of letting all of this unfold.

#

Yes, it might be better to close

wet wharf
#

(Probably but it also gets new members, silver linings are important)

#

I know the drama isn't worth it lol I'm mostly joking

#

But I am an experienced long-time dev who will stick around and I came because I care about Unity as a community of developers
