The rule "@’ing or replying to people who aren’t in the conversation." prohibits from clueing in anyone not in a conversation. With Discord being async that is highly useful. For a conversation "reply" exists so @'ing is not really needed.

You are asking for a privilege of having a constant attention of people who volunteer their time on the server and have their job to do as well.

Now who do you suppose will have an access to that privilege? Is it just for select few people or anyone will be able to ping them? How do you choose or manage that list of chosen ones?

Rules are for everyone. And you have plenty of tools on the server to have a focused discussion without pinging people into random conversations.

If they are in a long term conversation with you then that's within the spirit of the rule.
If you're pinging staff into new bugs and issues as they've requested then that's great.
If you're pinging them into roadmap-item pain points, then you should consider if that's necessary (it most likely isn't).
Almost any other ping related to the rule isn't necessary.

Also note that "reply" and @'ing are semantically the same thing as far as the rule's concerned, which is why they're both mentioned there.

so it's a rule for mods? i get that. i and others have gotten that privilege to ping people from dots team in conversations, so there's no need to enforce the rule then.

And specifically in that case they didn't. And asked not to do that.

This particular complaint has stemmed from pinging staff into an issue. Generally this is a bad idea, but in this specific case it's borderline and depends on how the specific staff want to be notified.
Imo pinging them should be more thoughtful than above, regarding both the general reason (a pain point) and the attitude

The point is to not @ people into wholly new conversations. It prevents dragging people into conversations they don't want to have. It prevents @'ing by association.
The rule itself will not being revised as it serves its purpose well. We can review how it's moderated in this specific instance.

There's a way to avoid pinging all together. I've created an example thread. Link your issues there. And when people have time they will check those out. #1300735192352296960 message

tbh, i can live with that rule but mods should also be aware when dots devs actively say to us that we should ping them about stuff. policing this in the way fogsight has handled it is absolutely uncalled for. your job is to keep it civil here. besides, i've been here for 5 years, actively engaging in pretty much only the dots channel and we have done pinging for years now too. so, this just feels very random to me what has happened today.
