Just released my demo after a year of work!

Spent a long time mulling over trailer/cinematography tips, so I tried my best.

The platformer where you're broke. Work odd jobs and try not to destroy everything along the way.

Love the match cuts!

frigid stratus
#

Thanks! I love them just as much

#

had to create SO many custom dev tools to get perfect camera shots

tall ruin
#

I love how this looks!

little reef
#

I would play this game, except i'm broke

little reef

Well i meant the full version

frigid stratus
#

Ah ok

#

I can definitely try, WebGL builds are a bit finicky

#

Last time I tried, it kept crashing my computer

Here are 3 concepts our artist, JELY, drew up for Terrapotta Rise, as well as the finished result.

You can really see the progression to focus more on the petals, as well as the slow infection of pink over time.
While the jack-in-the-beanstalk look of the former was fun, we figured a more pink-prominent design would stand out far more for our game's "plant area". 🌸🌸🌸

that's me!

little reef
#

Ooooo

#

Once you start drawing concept art, i feel like that’s when you’ve leveled up as a game dev

#

Maybe that’s just me, but concept art sounds so professional

stuck linden
#

heheh

#

sure feels professional

#

we have tons actually

little reef
#

😮

#

Are you guys full time devs

stuck linden
#

i just have a ridiculous amount of free time and a constant urge to create

little reef
#

Dang

#

Perfect

#

It’s game dev without worrying about money

stuck linden
#

indeed

little reef
#

So are you two friends from before that started a game, or friends because you guys were finding a team to make a game

stuck linden
#

we worked on an old project together long ago

little reef
#

Ah okok

#

I was wondering, since my friends aren’t into game dev

stuck linden
#

and rejoined to work on this game, alongside our third team member, the resident music guy

little reef
#

😮 so there’s an art person, a music guy, and a designer/programmer?

stuck linden
#

yep

little reef
#

Dang, it’s perfect

stuck linden
#

the ideal trio

#

perfect for me at least

#

i'm just left to run free and design areas and characters

little reef
#

I don’t like designing art and messing with color palettes, so i wish i had an aritst ;-;

#

But i’m too casual of a developer

#

Btw how long did it take to make your game so far

stuck linden
#

bout a year

#

june 19th was the anniversary of us starting

little reef
#

Wow

#

You never lost motivation?

stuck linden
#

there were times where things slowed down

#

but as a whole we never really stopped

#

we just kept on slimin

little reef
#

Do you think having a team helped you stay on track

stuck linden
#

for sure

#

multiple opinions on a project, plus other people you're working in tandem with

#

it's both more fun to work collaboratively and more motivating

#

working solo, there's not much really stopping you from stopping

#

but in a team, you gotta be a team player

#

makes staying motivated easier

little reef
#

I see i see

tall ruin
#

What is the process of idea to in the game for art when your working with your team @stuck linden

#

This game looks awesome by the way

stuck linden
#

I'm the creative lead so typically I'll write out a suggestion, often times with a drawn-up visual to help detail my idea

#

Though ideas can come from anyone in the team, I just... do it the most

#

Then we'll discuss the idea and if we all come to a conclusion, it's "confirmed"

#

But nothing's truly confirmed until actually implemented

tall ruin
#

That’s really cool! When other people in the team pitch an idea do they also use the visual? And is the visual just a simple quick drawing or something more detailed?

stuck linden
#

Me, often I'll make a more detailed visual

#

Ideas do oft come with a visual, simple or not, from anyone though

tall ruin
#

Wow you guys are inspiring!

Another day, another slimepost.

Here we see the Cytochasm's development stages... and, more specifically, how little it's changed. It's pretty much always been a strangely geometric cave system with water falls and lots of glowing bits. Can't beat perfection, eh? It was at one point called The Cellar though... not quite as catchy.

So as reparation and to make the rectangular formatting work, here's also the concept art for the Cytobugs! They're loosely represented in the trailer mockup, but they actually come in all sorts of shapes and colors. You'll learn more about them when you explore the Cytochasm for real... eventually...

Can i suggest a large variety of slime dances

frigid stratus
#

Ofc!

little reef
# frigid stratus Ofc!

Ok i kinda meant that i suggested adding more, but now that i’m looking at the wording, it looks like i wanted to give you slime dance ideas

#

I guess i could think of some too

The third and final conceptual area featured in the trailer and demo ending is, of course, Sunset City!

Did you know at one point it was called Genre City? It was going to be more focused around movie genres, taking you through several trope-prominent places. But in the end we decided light was a more versatile and workable concept. It also started out very rainy design-wise, but eventually that was reworked as well to a beautiful sunset. Once we left the rain idea behind, it really started to shine, if you will.

Do you guys use tilemaps to make the levels, or do you meticulously draw and set colliders

frigid stratus
#

We use tilemaps

#

Sometimes we do have an overlay graphic, in that case, we use a invisible tilemap to easily create colliders

little reef
#

Ah i see

stuck linden
#

Manually drawing would be torturous 🙏

little reef

No updates?

This project is looking very cool, cant wait to see more!

Scary slime 😱

#

Like the boss though

frigid stratus
#

using NODDING detection for user input

#

our character doesnt rly talk, so this is a cool workaround

#

also had a blast coding it

little reef
#

Looks a lot spookier than the 2d screenshots

frigid stratus
#

What’s a silly game without some eldritch horror

tall ruin
#

That’s funny

@dreamy meadow Hi Mathias! Yes we do need one, would you be interested?
