At this point we all know that Unity shot themselves in the foot pretty heavily when they announced the runtime fee back in 2023. Developer backlash was severe and ongoing and as a result there have been massive changes at Unity. Perhaps the final person involved in the entire Unity run-time fee fiasco, Mark Whitten, head of Unity CREATE, has ...
excellent.
accountability is important in a company, and given how inefficient unity has become, we'll hopefully see more execs and PM exiting
We'll see how this goes, this and other changes at least gives some hope for Unity's future
We don't want another Renderware situation
what happened at renderware?
This video explains it better
The short version: Renderware was popular until EA bought the company responsible of the engine, Criterion, and afterwards, EA pretty much killed the engine.

One of the first reusable game engines came from an unexpected quarter: a group of British software engineers working in the research arm of a Japanese camera company. 14/11: Apologies for the blurring on ...
The story has some similarities with Unity, and curiously enough, the whole Unity situation involved an ex-EA executive 😆
Although if you want a situation that is much closer to Unity's, look into JC Penney and its attempt of removing its coupon discounts:

interesting. i'll go through all that.
ever heard of general magic?
First time i heard of that name
Amazing company that somehow attracted the most creative best engineers in the 90s, made the precursor to the iPhone before Jobs nabbed it, company faltered due to bad direction and infighting, lost their best who became prominent in tech companies that we still know.
Huh, interesting
Thanks for the info 👍
