Hey, I’m getting into making games, but can’t even think of a game to start off. I was wondering how people think of their ideas for games, seems like I can only think of ideas for games already made, and with those games in my head I can’t think of original mechanics.

There are a few things I do. But I always keep laundry lists of game ideas. I start with a high level concept, and 3 bullet points. I like to mix two very different things together. And I like to create unique original IP - it doesn't sell nearly as well. But it is more personally rewarding.

A good example, is a small RPG I recently did as a beta test. It's all in black and white, very clearly detailed pixel perfect art. And I made the story about being undead. I pictured it as a game where you can print any page and it's automatically a coloring book.

Anyway, just very opposing concepts. But you can apply it to anything.

Sometimes my ideas are just things I want to play that don't really exist.

But take a concept (say 2D platformer) combine it with another (say crafting game) and then with a spin (characters can go upside down).

Worst case scenario, you can also ask chat gpt for short, very brief, unusual game ideas.

Anyway, to put this in context, I have 16 or so VR game prototypes I need to whip out. The goal is to see if any of each of them is enjoyable. And if so, use that to come up with another batch of samples and so on
