Saw this posted in another thread, but I'll repeat what I said over there: Yeah had a feeling unity wasn't gonna be able to scrape by without some kinda lay offs
If way bigger tech companies are doing layoffs, even friggin epic, then unity management's incompetence sadly was only bound to have their mistakes come bite them
Gross.
I really hope the people that do get fired of they go through with this find new jobs and don't get too disrupted by all this
Getting laid off is awful
It makes sense, doesn't Unity have thousands of employees that nobody knows the purpose of? Other engines have dozens, maybe hundreds, but only Unity has thousands. I see the memes all over, "Oh yes hi I am Tim, i lead the 17-man team in charge of picking the default Unity text font"

Unity has way more than just an Engine though
And most of their revenue doesn't come from the Engine directly (directly = engine license)
sorry, i should have clarified, the engine (according to what i've seen others pointing out) seems to have several times more developers assigned to it than other engines. It seems to come up in every single thread or post regarding Unity revenue
It's a bad take every time it's brought up
The majority of conversations on it seem to consist of people talking out of their behinds and making guesstimates as to what literally thousands of people are doing day-to-day, yeah. I was hoping to bait one of them with "thousands that nobody knows the purpose of" but apparently those guys are all on reddit instead of discord
product discontinuations? i hope one of those products isnt unity
Wonder if they'll specify what sectors of their company are being downsized.
I doubt that they will discontinue Unity itself, though i wouldn't rule it out, knowing the executives...
I can imagine they will discontinue other critical products or services that Unity uses, but only time will tell
If they DO discontinue Unity..... oh boy.......
..... Well, at least i have Godot covering me
They are not discontinuing Unity. There's no need to humour this conspiracy.
After reading this, yeah, i can confirm that they are not crazy enough to discontinue Unity, so we can be calm

Ah man, that's a relief, I was totally worried that Unity was going to stop supporting Unity
"we have purchased Super Mario Game Maker, that will be the new Unity, that is all"
not-sure-if-serious.gif
Dishy is joking I'm pretty sure
Don't mean to be rude here but it's illogical to think unity would ever drop support to it's own engine... That's just rediculous, they'd just file for bankruptcy at that point
Yeah
The layoffs are completely lame, don't get me wrong, but as osteel said there's no need to find a conspiracy to be mad at unity about
You can just... Be mad at unity, lol
or... in love 😍 with Unity
As a corporate entity with upper level management that bit off way more than they can chew and as a result are considering ruining the livelihood of a percent of thier workforce? Absolutely not.
Oh you can bet on it. The NEW investors bought Unity for a very expensive price when the head dev bailed. Now these Bolsheviks came along and added tracking and ads which doubled the phone apk footprint to where this sent game devs scrambling to splice the upload. Remember that? A lot bailed. Now with this new load agenda pushing to phones & headsets was crippled and caused system dumps to appear in front of noob devs, you know the young peeps who have never had to comb through a dump before? So where do you think these up and coming platform populus are going go or do? Bail, because the dumps are way beyond their skill set. Davi Ashke-nazi: are you listening? I have 4 games in the que and one was rejected in North Korea because of gambling. I dont ask for money. I dont ask for accounts. Its just a calculator using Roulette terms to explain why gambling doenst work 'in the house'. That was the first straw. Then when the android got bloated I bailed. Hello Blender and Steam. See? As a 45 year computer expert I saw the beatings from the start and continue in company policies like yours. Dilbert 2.0 vs. Human 2.0. I chose Human. I have no desire to further my attempts to push apks to android through Unity till I see progress for the public devs instead of corporate policy. It was working before and there were droves of new people each month establishing a very strong and valid aged based customer bases FOR YOUR FUTURE. We you pissed that away and now have gone down the expanded licensing / expense lock like you are some kind of Oracle or next gen Autocad. Times are tough for people and companies and you are doggy paddling in the outhouse. I have an extensive amount of purchased assets that I can now chalk up to loss. But I will make that back by shorting your company in the stock market. I know and 8 year old advanced python developer in Blender.
The clown posse is even here. Later.
