you should check where the actual position of the cursor is
in the scene view, select the cursor and make sure that the gizmos appear on the tip of the cursor
instead of some other place
while doing that, make sure that it says "Pivot", not "Center" in the top left corner of the scene view
you should also do the same for the top/bottom elements

also, you should make something visibly change when you're in vs. out of the good zone, to make it more obvious if it's working right
oh yeah, one other thought
do you have code moving the top and bottom objects?
they should not need to be moved at all
if you're messing with their local positions, then they could be moving in strange ways
let me alter the code so they don't move
they are parented to the bar itself
yeah. before when using local position is didn't work right if I wasn't moving the bottom and top
i guess it all might've shaken out to kind of work

but yeah, if you have a thing parented to another thing, it'll follow its parent
you only need to adjust its local position to move it relative to its parent
you could also set its world position, but that would make it drift away from its parent
