#2.5D look
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Yo
ahh i see
you could probably use the shader from that video
and textures from aseprite
for the same look
yeah ill try it out now, I also wanna know how to get a spritesheet to work
for terrain
do you have any ideas?
well I made the vending machine when I was prototyping terrains so I am not too sure
I saw a few tutorials for shaders to add hand drawn type effects to primatives
picoCAD was really helpful for applying textures to specific faces but it wasn't very efficient
the shader used in that video should deal with the reflection issue
idk maybe your opinion is different but I think the vending machine in my reference is pretty matte
yeah i started watching it and its actually exactly what i want lol
Nice, i'm glad it helped. I'm doing some more texture and modeling tests sometime this week on my prototype. I'll hit you up if I have any good results worth sharing
same
i was designing some terrain in blender actually, since i saw in octopath traveller they have some low poly models,
not everything is blocky
https://youtu.be/K6wW0pO08LE I found something interestig, but it is in japanese, we have to read the subtitles
yo that's sick
My progress, made some sprites for the ground, needs some polishing, but good placeholder for now i guess
that's sick
I followed some Mojang artists and found they use Blockbench a lot for stuff like this
so instead of using picoCAD I tried using block bench for the same model and it's pretty quick
ayyy nice find
I was stumbling around with UV meshes in Unity
Are there curved surfaces in blockbench?
I think so but they're much more low poly
UV meshes would be really good for things like brick walls or wooden floorboards
yeah guess so
yo, a bit of progress
tilemaps and rules work great now,
autotiling looks soo satisfying
did you make any other assets?
not much, I'm still researching some aseprite plugins and settling between Blender or Blockbench for the 3d portions but I did make a bench lol
just needs some texture
that autotiling is super cool
Something really cool about blockbench is you can create a UVmap of your model and export it as a .png to edit in Aseprite
that way your textures are auto-sized and pre-fitted
oh my god i need that
clicking and dragging the boxes sucks so much
I think i will use block bench for some assets like 2.5d fences
this is way faster
Yeah
I am trying to do like lightposts and sidewalks and stuff
I did that for 2 hours just to make an edge block look decent
LOL
Yeah there are
it's really awkward to work in because it's like meant for voxels though
oh
yeah it looks like i really need to shift to blockbench
Probuilder is ass
its good for something like a cube
but if you wanna make something slightly different you have to fight
Yeah, I agree
For me it's really good because my goal is to use it for stage backgrounds in a 1v1 fighter
so you are also using blender?
I want to use blender because it has a big community so it's easy to find help
ahh i tried that
but I only really found like 1 community plugin for aseprite to work with blender
so I think Blockbench might just be better
in blender discord it is no easy to find help unless you beg 3-4 times
oh well hmm
that plugin is pretty cool but I haven't looked into it much
no plugins for bbench?
I think there are
but it has enough features for this use case that it doesn't really like need them
yeah i was gonna ask if it even needs aseprite
so you are mainly working with squares right?
like no slopes or other shapes?
Yeah pretty much
slopes in fighting games are a big no no
so all complex shapes will be background only
oh yeah lol
so you are making a tekken esk fighter or more fast paced?
I'm still a bit undecided. It's either going to be sumo-themed or a fast sort of anime fighter
I love the substitution jutsu mechanic in Naruto Storm games and I wanna try that in a 2d game
but I'm more of a programmer than an artist so most of my effort has been on mechanics
same haha
its tough to make your own assets
YEAH
and it costs a fortune to buy decent ones
Yeah for a lot of my animations and stuff I've been thinking about copying from existing sprites from here https://www.spriters-resource.com
The #1 source for video game sprites on the internet!
definitely you can have something like that, would make it more intense
i think if you search hard enough you can find some good elements (like UI stuff and icons) in there
with no copyright
i have
these icons are free to use,
(there are 800 of them)
so if you want something this just tell me ill share the link
i guess i can send the file
oh thats sick
by the way, if you want complex animations i think i have a video i can link

Today we are looking at Pixel Art and why this one art style has started to appear in almost every game!

give it a watch, it might help you out more than it did me
