Beta events timings

Is it a bug or are the timings for the events in the beta fairly arbitrary? I've just returned to what I thought was still going to be the maths event, expecting it to run for another day and a half or so, to find it has ended and been replaced with a cheese event. Fair enough, it's beta, but I do fairly carefully plan around end times to select what and when to upgrade
