they are placeholders
for missing textures
if it gets a texture, it is most likely to be released (episode 26)
also you're missing a major point here; betas are only a test and they are imperfect; all of the traits and generators can be imperfect and be a placeholder; for trait pictures, the placeholders are usually alpha centauri trait pictures and for astronomy missions and graphics like that it can be eagle nebula and sun(in the garden).

Nothing in beta will be perfect. People really think it's just so simple but it's not. They have to go through millions of lines of code to find even a single bug. It's back breaking and time consuming on top of knowing where the bug takes place, how to replicate it, and THEN fixing it.

creating a game not only has a purpose to entertain e/o, but to improve their games by fixing the bugs, improving themselves, and keep repeating them. if the devs feel generous they might drop a release
