Far too often I get thrown into matches where there is such a heavy rank disparity between players on a team where low ranked players are playing with high ranked players and vice versa. High ranks have no one to work with and they end up having to hog the puck to have a chance to win and the low ranks don’t like that they’re never touching the puck and it’s frustrating for everyone involved. Lower ranks need to be with and against similar elo players where they can learn and improve their game against equal competition instead of being carried by better players.
Here’s a scenario: A legend player is paired with a couple of gold players against a full plat team. When you add up the elo on paper it looks like an equal match but I’ve been on both sides of this and the plats have the easier matchup by a mile. They only have to worry about one player and the lower ranks who don’t even have basic mechanics down yet can single handedly lose you the game.
I’d understand if this happened when there’s only 15-20 people in the queue and you can’t really complain about who you end up with but this consistently happens even during peak hours where there is close to 100 people in the queue.
The simple solution is to just not bother with solo queue but part of why I’ve played solo so much is that each game is only 5 minutes and it’s nice to run a quick 2 or 3 matches when I have time instead of waiting for a team. That and it’s always fun when the queue is in a good state and you get matches where everyone with and against you knows how to play and you’re mixing and matching up with different players each game.
My solution to this is implementing another queue setting where the game will not match you with players more than two ranks above or below you and if after 5 minutes you have not found a match the queue will widen the player pool to everyone. This being optional will let players choose whether they value speed of matchmaking more or getting better matches overall.
