I know this comes up a lot, but I have a weird idea to support it. Start with a 1v1 mode with a separate rank and leaderboard. Instead of splitting the queue completely, force the player to always queue 3v3 but have the option to add 1v1 to their queue (so they'd get a 1v1 OR a 3v3 match). I know this would still slightly split the playerbase, but since it's a 1v1 mode the queue times would be shorter and maybe more players would queue.

It's not fairly simple to implement unfortunately 😅 still, I'm willing to experiment. Just very scared of it causing a death spiral. Nowadays we're doing juuuust good enough to not cause that and then every few months we get an influx of people to keep things stable. Messing with that balance is scary

Yeah the current system was built with one queue in mind so it'd need a rework; we'd also need to redesign some UI/UX in the game to accomodate for it, and then make it clear what the system is doing

i know im late, but all this would do is make queue times for the main gamemode longer, and only give u a badge to wear around for ur stupid 1v1 rank. we dont have the playerbase for a seprate gamemode, nor the resources to accommodate this gamemode (new stadium). u can do all of this in custom game, or make a 1v1 discord server, that u can do ranks off of like pugs. stupid idea we dont need

Please keep the discussion on topic. Additional game modes are still in consideration and will be implemented when and if they will provide value to the game. Our top priority is bringing new players in and old player back, for which we are creating new features such as limited time events rather than game modes so the matchmaking queue does not get split. We won't rule out more queues in the future when the player count is capable of supporting them.

Additional idea to tack on: instead of slowly increasing the mmr range of matchups as the queue time increases, increase the likelihood of getting a 1v1 match (you can only queue 3v3, or 3v3 and 1v1)
There will be less likelihood of golds + legends playing together that way
