#Can I have like 3 games in a row without homophobia/racism ?

Hey,

It's my first post here, and I know it will be just a venting post but honestly I feel really bad at the moment after playing some Slapshot games tonight...

I feel like I can't play a lot of games before having a full lobby of random people going crazy about the most random thing "Oh this person has a black avatar, let's call him a ni*er", "Oh this one is playing with the rainbow cross, he must be a fa**t or something, and must be wished a quick death"...

Listen, I know the report button exist, I usually does it, I think it kinda works as I often have messages that actions have been taken, but I don't know if it's because those actions are not strong enough, but I ALWAYS play multiple times against at least 2 or 3 people acting that way every damn night, and honestly it's so upsetting when you try to escape from the real world.

I'm playing at a correct elo, around platinium, so people that I play with or against must already have some hours into the game, so why after like 20, 50 or 100 hours are they still not at least muted ?

Yeah maybe I'm delusional to still play with the rainbow cross, but I will not change it I don't want to let their hate win, if I want to play with a goddamn xylophone, I will play with a goddamn xylophone !

So yeah uh I guess I'm just feeling bad at the moment, homophobia is going stronger and stronger in my country and I just want to find some safe places. Is the Slapshot team taking this into account for the future ? Or is it a secondary issue ?

Anyway, have a nice evening !

# glossy jewel Hey, It's my first post here, and I know it will be just a venting post but ho...

Hey, creating a safe space for people to be able to relax is important to us (especially to me as I am queer myself and have experienced some quite heavy cases of homophobia and transphobia ingame).

We try to deal with as many reports as possible but there’s too many to deal with all of them. But especially if they seem to be avoiding filters for slurs, it’s good if you open a ticket via #help (screenshots are good but its enough if you can tell us when you played the game)

Im going to bed for today but tomorrow morning I'll check through your chat history (would be nice for you to give your in game name) to check for people we haven’t caught yet.

I wish you all the best! Stay strong, we’ll be free some day.🏳️‍🌈

Hey Belo, thanks a lot for the quick (and awesome !) answer 🙂

It really feels relieving that the problem is really taken into account and obviously I know from experience that trying to fight homophobia, transphobia and other hateful behaviors take a lot of time and effort ! So thanks a lot once again.

I will not have a screenshot for this time, but I'll try to do it if (or i should say when, I guess) it happens again. My IG name is 'Tutut les Rageux', and I guess it was during one of my 2 or 3 last games of the day.

Stay strong too, and wishing you all the best as well 🌈

Me just ally but sometimes I play with rainbows and report all haters, stay strong and have a nice day all

Went through it and muted a few people

Any homophobia or racism is met with a 1 month mute minimum, with repeat offenses resulting in a permanent mute. We take action as soon as possible, there's moderators going through them for several hours every day. Our filters also catch a huge amount of them, we just don't want to make them too strict because false positives are very frustrating too for everyone involved. If you see other games with a unique solution to encourage positive behavior, I'm all ears and will shamelessly copy any system that works

Best system I've ever seen is "no chat, period", unfortunately. It was done in Omega Strikers, and players only have emotes and tactical callouts to communicate with each other

#

It is too restrictive, surely, but it did work (until they added clown emotes, at least)

Which in part results in:

That's fair. I doubt that was the only/major reason the game's development came to a halt of sorts (they still have servers running and balance patches here and there, just no plans for new characters, skins or stages), but I can't say for sure it didn't play a part on it

We're not a huge game, but the amount of people we do have is fairly consistent because a community is built around the game. Losing the ability to chat will harm that. We can't let the bad apples take away the good things from us.

torpid glen
#

Yeah, that's fair

#

Other than these "radical" suggestions, only things I think that could work are just punishments (which this game already applies) and general encouragement to positive behavior (but that's where the community itself has to play its part, too)

#

Hope I'm making sense, I didn't really play online so I can't say for sure how it feels in-game, I can only feel a bit through this server

I would like to bring back the days when people had basic fucking empathy.
If you are in a minority that is still actively discriminated against and you're able to withstand hate against that that’s great for you but not everyone is able to do that or should need to.

torpid glen

It's insanely easy to say that when you're not negatively affected by it.

when we can be openly queer in public without having to be scared that we might be attacked any second, when we actually have all of the same rights as straight cis non-intersex people, then we can talk about letting others use slurs

if you want to make words meaningless you have to remove the discrimination that’s associated with it. The reason the n word is still offensive is because people of colour are still discriminated against in large parts of the western world though I am by no means qualified to talk about that in detail

Using slurs for groups that you are a part of is fine if you know that everyone around you is fine with it too or if it has been widely accepted in that community. We cannot ever realistically verify that was the case though even in a custom lobby therefore it’s muted everywhere.

“Society of pussies” more like society of people caring about eachother. Realizing that certain words should never be used

# mossy finch Hey, quick suggestion, and I do agree that people should have compaction and be ...

It's what I tend to do on most games when the community is too toxic, but most of the interractions I have with people are fun so I'd rather avoid that, but I'll keep in mind that it's a possibility on Slapshot too ! Those last days I didn't have a single problem on Slapshot (except when they told me I was stupid, but it felt fair enough with how I was playing), so I guess I either was lucky or the actions taken by the admins are making an impact 🙂

Personally, and this is somewhat removed but still relevant:
Even if I turned chat off it wouldn’t have prohibited a player actively joining the other team for the whole game because they didn’t wanna play with a person with rainbows in their name.
This is an extreme case obviously but if words don’t result in consequences there will be more than words some day. (Not implying you believe they shouldn’t get penalised because I think that’s what you were alluding to, just elaborating a bit I guess)

#

turning chat off can be nice if you want to focus purely on the gameplay but chances are if they realise they cant get you with words they will try something else (like in slap bumping you repeatedly in situations where it’s just plain griefing)

Hello, it's me once again, I don't want to open a new ticket as it's exactly the same topic.

Today, a player told me to kill myself with my pride flag (classic), and 2/3 games later, after my first report, I'm once again playing against him, and we got a global message telling us he got muted because of toxic behavior.

I basically told him it's deserved with a bunch of smileys (it's a little childish, I agree, but hey he told me two games in a row to kill myself, so...) and that he should stop being homophobic.

Someone who didn't know this story during the game asked me "Hey, what did he do to get banned ?" and I told him "He told me to kill myself with my pride flag" and... I got instantly muted, I guess it was automatic !

Tbh it was quite funny when it happened, everyone spamming "karma" and stuff, but... Am I really staying a whole month muted for that ? Or is it reviewed later ?

Honestly if I'm muted it's not THAT bad I'll just mute all starting from now (missing funny exchanges but also avoiding homophobic kids, I guess it has its advantages too), but I wanted to make sure that mute is deserved before that.

TLDR : If I must shut up, I will, if I must not shut up, I may not

heady vine

what's your in-game name?

Tutut les Rageux

#

And ofc if my ban is deserved, it's ok I'll not complain, it's just that it felt odd !

heady vine
#

I removed the mute, given the context it's not mutable.
Just for the future, try to avoid those terms yourself in game chat; just saying "called me a slur" would've been enough.

Hope you have a nice rest of your day :)
