THE REAL THING - FAITH NO MORE
Comments: ||If there's one thing that Mike Patton and the whole Faith No More group in general embraces the most is versatility, and you can clearly see why in this one: even in the debut album for Patton in the band he nails such an amazing vocal performance, which for me is honestly the highlight of it, dude can go from singing death metal to funk to rap and even a damn opera (with his latest project). The album itself is even hard to label as a single genre because the palette of sounds they go through is just so diverse: alt metal, alt rock, a good bunch of funk, hardcore, rap metal and even some kind of RnB, that's definitely a plus even when some songs felt like a little bit extra or that needed to be a bit shorter, but even with that the album in general feels pretty solid as it is, pretty errr... epic

Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
Rating: ||8.3||
Favorite Songs: ||Things Done Changed, Gimme the Loot, Machine Gun Funk, Juicy, Everyday Struggle, Big Poppa, Friend of Mine, Unbelievable, Suicidal Thoughts||
Comments: ||The massively successful and influential debut album of east coast rapper Notorious B.I.G gives snapshots into his history and lifestyle. Immediately, you get introduced to Biggie's distinctive smooth flow and his ability to stack one memorable quotable on top of another. He plays around with various styles: boom bap beats, jazz, funk and even uses a g-funk instrumental in Big Poppa. His lyrical content is not new to the genre at this point from the ups and downs of dealing drugs to handling death and mortality to braggadocious behavior; but what sets him apart from his peers is how immediately catchy the entire soundscape is from the tight production to Biggie's instantly recognizable lyricism. While 90's hip hop/rap isn't a genre that I gravitate towards, this album is unquestionably one of the best.||

Rating: ||5/10||
Fav Song: ||There is Power in a Union||
||Well, it's nice to hear left-wing politics in this format, it's very different from ratm and soad! Obviously a lot of this takes place under the british context as well. The songs don't feel too deep or interesting aside from the lyrical content, so it wasn't that exciting to follow but I did appreciate the more direct and upfront statements like There is Power in a Union and Help Save the Youth of America.||

Faith No More - The Real Thing

Fav song: ||The Real Thing||
||The single Epic is definitely not the highlight here. Seriously everything from Zombie Eaters to the end is amazing with what would be considered alt rock sounds but felt ambient to me.||
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers - Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton
Rating: ||7.4||
Favorite Songs: ||All Your Love, Hideaway, Double Crossin' Time, Have You Heard, Ramblin' On My Mind, Steppin' Out, It Ain't Right||
Comments: ||An iteration of Eric Clapton's career where he joins forces with John Mayall and his band to create some tuneful blues and folk rock. The album features some smoky, smooth blues licks from Eric Clapton and the husky, soulful vocals from John Mayall. The rest of the band also shines all over the album with the couple of instrumental tracks that feature them jamming together which showcases their versatility and virtuosity. Even if the mixing is a bit muddy in spots, there are catchy, toe-tapping blues rock songs throughout the entire album that are pleasant to listen to.||
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Rating: ||7.0||
Favorite Songs: ||Epic, Falling to Pieces, Surprise! You're Dead!, The Real Thing, The Morning After||
Comments: ||It's here, the first Faith No More album with new frontman Mike Patton. The band continues their streak of metal & funk crossover sounds but now with an injection of Mike Patton's vocal versatility and high technical ability. Their music chameleon shifts constantly between metal, punk-rock and funk rock and Mike Patton's vocals help make that transition extremely smooth and connected. The instrumentals are littered with fun funky basslines, punchy drums and aggressive guitar riffs. And it's not a Faith No More album without a cover song, this time featuring the classic Black Sabbath epic "War Pigs". Unfortunately, what brings this album down for me is how unbalanced the mix is. The high end is so bright, sharp and tinny while the rest of the mix feels really thinned out and fuzzy, as well as the strangely poor sound quality on the drums. It's possible this is all an artistic choice but it unfortunately brings down a lot of songs that I think are really well written.||
Billy Bragg - Talking with the Taxman About Poetry
Rating: ||2||
Fav song: ||There Is Power in a Union||
||An uninteresting mix of gloomy songs and rallying songs. Bragg's singing was unbearable and minimal instrumentation didn't help really. Music isn't the best medium for his message.||

Billy Bragg - Talking with the Taxman About Poetry
Rating: ||7.0||
Favorite Songs: ||The Marriage, Ideology, There Is Power in a Union, Help Save the Youth of America, The Passion||
Comments: ||British singer-songwriter, Billy Bragg, brings his political motivations to the forefront in this folk album. The instrumental palette is very stripped down, with just a couple layers of instrumentation and a heavy use of acoustic instruments, which support and highlight Billy Bragg's lyrical message as well as his unique vocal delivery. Despite not showcasing much technical vocal ability, Billy Bragg's voice does have a twangy charm that works with the genre and his bright timbre contrasts well to the lyrical content. The messages he brings to the table all focus on the poor state of the world: political corruption, the exploitation of the middle class, and the horrors of war & colonization, just to name a couple issues. All of these issues are presented with warm and pleasant blues, folk, country and ragtime instrumentation. While these genres of music aren't ones that I prefer, the album is nice to listen to and the lyricism is well presented.||
all up to date

@rare cipher @eager stump @sand timber just checking you guys wanna continue with the albums list, havent had any inputs for a while and you got quite hefty backlogs now
really enjoying everyone's long form reviews especially on stuff i'm not really familiar with
ye ye i wanna continue, but will be listening to the albums on my own time
gotcha
do you think itll be worth me giving you access to the sheet so you can update it in your own time?
OOPS
sorry other snoopy
@tiny beacon
i wonder how long i should keep up the length of my reviews. I don't think I say anything interesting, but I kinda use the comment section as a mental dump. it's not structured at all.
yeah itll be handy for you to look back over
more than anything
once we're like 100+ albums deep
does this mean youre in or out
out as far as reviewing each
okay okay no worries
im just curious which come out
for sure
i'll hide your columns for now, in case you do wanna jump back in
but keep the sheet smaller/tidier
yeah i'm not trying to be a music reviewer or anything. I literally just take notes as I listen to them and try to string the notes together in reasonable sentences.
sometimes i look up the context of the albums + people's names
I'm taking notes from your reviews, for me music has mostly been oh this sounds good and oh that sounds bad, so reading your comments have been very helpful on pinpointing what I actually like or dislike about certain albums
Glad to hear it!
Yeah I still can't fully verbalize why I like and don't like certain stuff.
oh shit kendricks on this album
But the Faith No More album was the first time so far where the mix actually brought it down a lot for me
A well mixed version of that album is probably a mid 8 for me
I looked at the 2021 list and it adds GKMC to it
2018 only has the one.

||Thundercat is an incredible musician and also a huge weeb. You can instantly recognize his funky bass on other artists' tracks. It's nice to finally hear him be both playful (meow) and serious (The Turn Down) not in the context of someone else's project, but that's not to mention the few but legendary features on here. Essential jazz-funk listening in short-but-sweet consumable tracks weaved together.||

the thing im curious of is if someone gets an unexpected 10
something they hadnt heard before
theres only one potential 10 for me
10s in general I just rarely give
almost never actually
for me the whole album gotta be cohesive, no skips, and got great replay value

TALKING WITH THE TAXMAN ABOUT POETRY - BILLY BRAGG
Comments: ||The lyricism is great, deep and has a lot of meaning specially coming from this guy’s already known political influence with the Labour Movement and the workers, it’s always important to highlight something like this given how much they project the actual reality they lived in back in the day and the fight that still has to be kept on going. That said, I vibe with folk from time to time but this honestly didn’t get to click at all with me, which is pretty sad because of what I said from the lyrics, the only one I really vibed to was the Blues one at the very beginning, but I found myself wanting to press skip several times.||

DRUNK - THUNDERCAT
Comments: ||God I love this album, Thundercat is just a musical genius and its easily recognizable why in this one, the amount of fusion sounds he goes through is just mind boggling: jazz, funk, RnB, Hip Hop, Disco, etc. dude just manages to make his own product, his own trademarked sound in such an iconic way, though some people can like the guy more as a producer and a feature artist, I just think something special gets impregnated in his own solo projects, his voice tone which happens to nail for some reason in such a groovy and smooth way even when it's not his main feature is a great point of value, and I don't think I need to go deep into his arrangemets and producing stuff like, its just ABSURD how every element manages to be perfectly cohesive with each other even in his craziest songs on the album, and also I'm a bass person so everytime a bass shines like that I just can be so entertained about it, I love you Thundercat you the GOAT.||

Comments: ||Time to go on a dream-like space journey into jazz, soul and funk. Thundercat brings his trademark soulful funk bass virtuosity and infuses 70s inspired synth sounds to bring this atmospheric concept to life. In a few tracks, he plays around with space, giving more room for the instrumentals to breathe and gives a level of openness, which helps build upon the themes. Lyrically, Thundercat puts his interests and humor on the forefront ranging from cat worship to anime obsession onto more potent, personal subjects like depression and loneliness. The small runtimes also help make sure that the motifs and ideas don't drag on for too long. However, there are definitely tracks in the backend that don't catch my attention. I would've liked a little bit more variety, especially on the vocals which mostly stayed in that airy, funk-style sound. Still a really fun and enjoyable listen, even if it doesn't fully come together.||

Comments: ||The Velvet Underground pairs up with German singer-songwriter Nico to create one of the most influential rock albums of all time. Bands that have incorporated genres like art rock, psychedelic rock and drone rock can all be traced back to this album. The Velvet Underground managed to fuse together their experimental rock with the popular sounds of the 60's like blues rock and garage rock. All in all, we get a wild, chaotic, unhinged collection of songs that toe the line between catchy and discordant. Each song has a melodic line that carries through every frenzied sonic wave that it crashes into and yet it all works together. The lo-fi quality helps enhance the eeriness of album, while Lou Reed's oddball talk-singing delivery gives the songs an extra layer of weirdness that is instantly recognizable. Nico's vocals provide a welcome contrast and cooldown moment to the album with her grandiose and smooth tone. These dark instrumentals are further supported by the gritty themes presented in the lyrics: drug abuse, BDSM, and sexual deviancy, just to name a few. This album is harsh and jarring and pushes the boundaries of "catchy" rock music, but I found the whole experience really enjoyable to navigate through.||

||I've listened to this before some years back and genuinely didn't really get it until recently when I started listening to more Lou Reed. Obviously again it's one of those influential oldies that was doing something crazy for its time but I think it has aged pretty well and there's some stuff going on that sounds experimental even for today. Heroin was a crazy ride over the 7 minutes. Good variety over the 11 tracks here as well and the alteration between Lou and Nico is great. Really enjoyed my listen today :)) ||

Comments: ||Truly a legend album right here, specially because some really conceive it as the start of alt rock and one of the most visionary albums of all time, and with a lot of arguments like I mean, look at the roughness, the groundbreaking sound on an album from 1967, the lyrics being super raw to whatever was expressed back then in terms such as nihilism for example, it’s pretty crazy, epic album always glad to revisit a classic.||

TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB - SHERYL CROW
Comments: ||Ugh I’m really sorry lads, I didn’t connect with this one a single bit, didn’t like her voice, the songs sound all so generic and that’s probably a core problem on pop rock with country notes which is exactly where this one comes from, and pretty much nothing stood out for me, can’t see the value in it to be added in the list either idk, first one I genuinely didn’t like at all in the list so far, the funk songs barely did it.||

Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club
Rating: ||7.6||
Favorite Songs: ||Leaving Las Vegas, Strong Enough, Solidify, All I Wanna Do, We Do What We Can||
Comments: ||Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow delivers some tuneful country and blues rock on her debut album. It's headlined by two of her most successful singles "Strong Enough" and "All I Wanna Do" which are excellently crafted pop rock songs. Sheryl Crow puts on impassioned performances with her sharp, yet calm vocal style, which all support the bittersweet themes and sentimentality of the tracks. She takes a couple artistic left turns on a few tracks: the 70's funk inspired "Solidify" with its groovy guitar licks and beeping keyboard passages, as well as the soft jazz ballad "We Do What We Can", which I think Sheryl pulls off successfully. Some of the tracks don't fully fill out the 4+ min runtimes which can make the album feel a little bit of a slog. Ultimately, Sheryl Crow starts off her career strong with some well crafted country pop rock and blues rock.||

LOVELESS - MY BLOODY VALENTINE
(I ended up going out without doing the review so I’ll do it rn while I wait for my mate hehe)
Comments: ||Here we have it, my favorite Shoegaze album ever. There’s just simply not enough known terms to accurately describe how essential this sound shift was both for its year of release and the genre itself which also happened to get its roots in masterpieces like this one: the transition of the classical alt rock (as known till then) to a much more ambient sound, more ethereal, the mixing of elements from dream pop, noise rock, post punk, etc. to give this sound that quality to be almost indescribable in a 100% accurate form, just amazing fr.
What’s also crazy following that last matter is that you don’t even need to get deep into analyzing Shoegaze itself to find one of the best epitomes of the sound in it like, the way the distorted, looped, tons of effect electric guitar gets more importance in the sound than the even the voice, the synths and sound effects being a close second gives you already the idea of how different this sound is in general compared to the “traditional” ways to make music.
I think the only reason I don’t give this a full 10 is because I still feel like I need to appreciate Shoegaze in a much better way that I do nowadays, because I consider myself an enjoyer of it but I wish I could be a little bit more into it in general, still with that, I know how to recognize a masterpiece when I listen to it and here’s the case.||

||W shoegaze hours and irish excellence, the only reason this is a 9 and not a 10 for me is I think some tracks are a bit weaker than others and touched always throws me off a bit. but the heights of this album at full volume are absolutely incredible and you have to just let it whisk you away to another dimension with all of its swirling guitar bullshit and hypnotic vocals. also just one of the most pleasing album covers ever to look at for some reason||

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Rating: ||7.6||
Favorite Songs: ||Like a Rolling Stone, Tomestone Blues, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues||
Comments: ||Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan continues his streak of catchy & toe-tapping blues and folk rock on Highway 61 Revisited. Bob Dylan by this point has established his musical style: great lyrical imagery and storytelling, his unique raspy talk-singing vocal delivery, his masterful grasp of writing sticky blues & folk melodies and his ever evolving fusion of acoustic rock, electronic rock and orchestral instrumentals. "Like a Rolling Stone" is one of his most successful songs to date, while the rest of the tracklist does a great job maintaining that level of catchiness. He goes over a few topics, mainly about the interesting (and sometimes tragic) lives of various people, as well as the joys of travelling and the horrors of the looming Vietnam War. This is a great addition to Bob Dylan's already excellent discography.||

||Not the biggest Queen guy other than the classics but I definitely feel like I've heard enough of them for a lifetime so I was a bit impatient with this one. I don't think much stood out from this one but it's just kinda another Queen album to me, nothing bad.||
QUEEN II - QUEEN
Comments: ||You just can barely go wrong with Queen (they have like 95% Ws and 5% Ls wish I could say they're flawless but that'd be lying to myself), this is their 2nd album right after debut and the one that started shaping their sound as a band that, even if they went through almost everything during their career, their essence as a band and some of their most iconic and remembered sound got its roots in this one, I've personally always loved Brian May's development and skillfulness and he really shines on this one so I think that's why I liked it quite a bit, and of course Freddie's voice.||

MELODRAMA - LORDE
Comments: ||Ahhh this album seriously… It really gives you the same feelings as my favorite album ever: a hug to the heart. Swinging between energetic pop beats, to deep piano ballads, Lorde gives us an amazing and truly original way to deliver so much feelings of self-care, introspectiveness, heart-break, love, sexuality, etc. every lyrics feels so incredibly emotional-heavy, something so simple yet so beautiful and carefully handmade, amazing.
About the sound itself I don’t think I have to go deep into it because Lorde was leading the pack of a whole new pop sound, not the typical one we use to listen on the radio every day but simply a brand new fresh thing, since Pure Heroine and which is also my fav album from her, but this one can definitely be remembered for decades as one of the most iconic milestones of the new wave of pop genre, the use of those dark notes, her baroque-esque voice, those so trademark beats she uses, everything together really makes you instantly think “Yeah, this is Lorde”, and this album is the epitome of all of it together, even more than PH I would say.||

Rating: ||8/10||
Fav Song: ||Mr. Churchill Says||
||Woooow this one caught me off guard, wasn't familiar with the band. Lots of political writing here but I think it has aged pretty well, the main thing for me was the band sounds incredible, loving the production and the various instrumental solos throughout are really great to listen to.||

TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Rating: ||6/10||
Fav Song: ||DLZ||
||Thought this album wasn't for me but as it went on I started to warm to it a bit and there's some great tracks on here. I have officially saved DLZ, Shout Me Out, Family Tree and Golden Age for later listening but I feel like I should give the opening stretch another chance sometime, just thought the singing wasn't for me at first and was ready to tap out for the rest of it||
here's the ones I missed
Paul Simon - Graceland
Rating: ||7.5/10||
Fav Songs: ||You Can Call Me Al, Under African Skies||
Comments: ||I wasn't feeling the first side, but the second side of this record is amazing and the South African influence adds so much.||

ARTHUR - THE KINKS

probably my favorite nina simone song https://youtu.be/QH3Fx41Jpl4
Finally having some time to get into the legend herself
I will be definitely be getting into more of her work but of course I already knew she was a legend and I can see why
her cover of Strange Fruit is amazing
WILD IS THE WIND - NINA SIMONE
Comments: ||She is considered the queen of early Soul and an absolute legend of it, and you can definitely see why, she just needs a piano, or some small jazz elements to be the company of her amazing, soothing, inspiring and legendary voice. I really wanted to get into her for a while and I’m glad I was introduced to her with this really good album, I’m gonna definitely check the rest of her stuff.||

catchup has begun
Post is pretty great
Ooo. I probably don't go that far. Top 4 for me i think?
Homogenic still above post. Post, debut and biophilia are all kinda in the same tier
For me
Medulla and Vulnicura are also good.
Ah well. They can't all be winners
Volta is probably my least favorite. Or Fossora
Fossora I need to listen to some more, but I didn't enjoy the first couple times.
Nice
Yeah it sucks
Vespertine the goat of album covers
For bjork
Or biophilia
Man 2001 was crazy good for music
Vespertine, the glow pt2, toxicity, discovery, is this it, Jane doe, leaves turn inside you, the blueprint
Lateralus
Labor days
Confield
The argument, too eh?
And Kylie M Fever? Phew lad
White Blood Cells?
MELODY AM?
Oh amnesiac too
Not my fav but still solid
I see.
I never thought about 10s much. But I do have one so far in 1001 ||loveless||
I think I'll probably have like 14 or so more looking at the rest of the 1001 album list?
I prob have something like 20-30 tens.
10s on that list for me that I can recall are ||Vespertine, OK Computer, In Rainbows, Heaven or Las Vegas, Remain in Light, Abbey Road, TPAB||
||Sound of Silver and Is This It are close 10s||
Animals is sadly not on the list but that would be a 10 for me
No apostrophe on that list though
Thats my zappa album of choice
Sadge
I think it's just ||Hot Rats||
Mfw yukika

Maybe you'll get a new 10 while doing the 1001
I expect to get 3 or 4 more 10s
TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Rating: ||2/10||
Fav Song: ||N/A||
Thoughts: ||Not a fan of the production and his voice was just not it, was annoying to get through, especially that first half. First time in awhile that I can say I've disliked an album quite a bit||
That I haven't listened to before
Also no Daft Punk Discovery on the 1001 which hurts
Just ||Homework||
Still great.
But not my album of choice
im having the best time
The Paul Simon album is pretty great
yeah I really disliked this one lmao
such a unique album already
compared to what ive listened to
not just an album carried by the single either
yeah i can imagine
will likely check out his other albums at some point
always loved you can call me al but never thought of listening to more

you can call me al also makes so much more "sense" when listening to the rest of the album too
it's a shame
the albums he did before he went mad with the pikes were great full formed ideas
well that's it tbh
when you release so many of them, some are bound to not be good
electric tears for me
i was less interested by the time he went mad with albums and never kept up
wish i'd have got some on vinyl tho, that would've been cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4ajCDZK9Qk this is what got me into buckethead, man was mystifying

agreed but i think i'm gonna give the first few songs another listen just to make sure i wasn't tripping

DEAR SCIENCE - TV ON THE RADIO
Comments: ||Expected decent, didn't get that, really inconsistent sound, arrangement feels vague, poor and doesn't even add a certain aesthetic to the sound as it happens in some bands, here just not at all. Never listened to these guys before and I honestly thought they were ok but at least here can't see their legendary value, and not even to be included in a list like this when so many other good albums were left out.||
Rating: ||2.8/10||

ye this was bad
