CALIFORNICATION - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

Comments: ||A classic on its own way, and the album that cemented RHCP's fame as one of the most important bands of the new way to make rock back in the late 90's and early 00's. You can easily recognize the importance and impact members like John Frusciante had in taking the lead on this project specifically and how fundamental the dude was for Red Hot in general, and how it went to show how much they needed him back in the band. I used to vibe to this one a lot back when I was young and finding about music for the first time out there, and really thought this was the shit, and it somehow still is, but being the most objective possible, this album is situated in this weird limbo between not being the top best album of them, nor the one they established their trademark sound, nor the one that broke the routine for them, but still managed to have a great bunch of amazing songs, and of course having their most acclaimed and recognized hits in it, a solid one but still one that didn't break too many walls, it was just good on it's own.||

Comments: ||A collection of alt rock & funk rock bangers. This is Red Hot Chili Pepper's most commercially successful album and showed the band expand their songwriting ability to more styles of music than their previous works. This marks Frusciante's first album back after rehabilitation and he sinks perfectly back into the group with incredibly catchy riffs and perfect chemistry with Flea's iconic funky, slap bass. In terms of lyrics, the band continues their streak of sexual imagery and metaphors, but we also see the band delve into darker themes like death, suicide, and drug addiction. These themes hit harder as the band goes away from their usual chaotic, bombastic style and in favor of slower, introspective rock ballads. The album does suffer from a bit of a bloated tracklist; a couple songs from the second half don't hit quite as hard as the rest of the album. Alas, this is still an enjoyable listen for me and brings back fond memories of growing up in SoCal.||

AFTERMATH - THE ROLLING STONES

I don't think I enjoyed this one at its fullest, I found it really fell short for the expectations of what Rolling Stones name brings as a band, I've never listened to this album from front to back before only to the popular banger Paint It Black and Under My Thumb, and I really expected better from it, I mean it's not terribly bad either and I can see the reason behind being included in the list I guess??, but certainly is not my favorite from them (that's Some Girls)||

Comments: ||One of the earlier albums in the discography of the legendary rock band The Rolling Stones. The international version starts off strong with Paint It Black with its opening sinister guitar riff and Mick Jagger's creepy humming halfway through the track. The rest of the album doesn't quite get to that level of intensity or catchiness, but instead focuses on their signature style of blues, rock n' roll and folk rock. Among the rest of the album, some solid tracks here and there but personally nothing else stood out to me. There are other albums from other bands in that time period that I enjoy more and I think The Rolling Stones gets a bit more creative and daring with their future releases.||

Felt like listening to some metal so here's my Anthrax review

Anthrax - Among The Living
Rating: ||6.5||
Review: ||Solid thrash metal album no doubt. I love the heavy guitar riffs, droning bass and the punchy drums on all of the songs. Also has quite a number of solos that I thoroughly enjoyed - Tracks 1, 3, 9. Overall, sonically, I enjoyed it very much. The only gripe I have with it musically is that the motifs and structure repeat themselves at the middle part of the album, tracks 4 - 7. There was not enough gimmicks, switch ups and tempo changes to keep me engaged throughout the entire length of the album. You get what's on the tin, a thrash metal album. I don't doubt that it was very influential on release, as it probably introduced pioneered new techniques. But it definitely didn't age well to the current day as the genre has been explored and refined. Aside from the technical gripes, another thing that is barring it from a 7 for me is the singing. On certain songs, I cannot begin to state how annoyed I felt at the vocals. Sometimes it just didn't mesh well at all for me and I was really tempted to press the skip button.||

Entroducing… - DJ Shadow

||If someone says to you that using samples is a lazy way to do music, shut their mouth and sit em to listen this masterpiece.

From the intro piano riff and the voice over that opens Building Steam With a Grain of Salt, DJ Shadow makes his intentions clear: showing off his encyclopedic knowledge about records and mastery on drum breaks and its programming.

Being this an album made only by samples, it feels like its own cohesive world, all dusty and grimy, pulling from the most varied places, from James Brown, to Metallica and Bjork, and making it work together by introducing little bits and pieces of samples that string the whole through out.

The crown jewels of this album have to be Stem / Long Stem and Napalm Brain / Scatter Brain: the former being a gorgeous harp driven piece that is interrupted but a aggresive drum break creating some interesting contrast to end on heavenly almost prog rock outro, the latter more psychadelic, with funky breaks, deep basses and that wah guitar that ties the whole song together.

By the last track, DJ Shadow again aims to the listener by using a movie dialog that subtly invites the listener to play this album from the top, to keep unveiling the layers and intricacies of a masterclass in musical collage.||

||This is funny because this was probably considered dad rock for a long time and now its probably at granddad rock stage. This is mostly just an easy listen with nothing too interesting going on in my opinion, I can see the appeal to older generations as singing about making sweet love probably gave older people of the 1960s a heart attack and was incredibly rebellious or something at the time 😭 I don't think their rocker aesthetic has aged that well but I respect it. I'm going to guess they went down as legendary more so for how they drove the culture rather than the sheer craftsmanship of the music, although apparently they used to 'share notes' with the Beatles. I would say I enjoyed this without feeling too connected or interested by it, so I'm going with a 6 atm.||

||Addicted to the raw energy of this one. I'm familar with PJ so I have a bit of context which helps understanding where she is coming from on this debut. It's mostly her personal response to the life experiences she has had being a young woman, dealing with the expectations around her to behave a certain way, and her conflict between wanting to keep up with these standards and not fall behind in life, along with the urge to sprint the other direction entirely. This manifests in her dealings with men, sometimes she is desperately trying to seduce them and other times she is calling them out on how they view her as an object they can use and throw away. I love how the vocals are sometimes almost struggling to fight their way in front of the guitars once we hit those intense moments of chaos, and then there are some extremely unpredictable and interesting instrumentals like whatever is going on for the last half of Plants and Rags. My only criticism of this album is that some of the demo versions that released on streaming recently are even better to me than the originals. Ironically this might be because her voice gets to shine more in the stripped back instrumentals - just go listen to the Dress demo!||

The combination of heavy power chords and blastbeats is a classic metal sound but Anthrax gives it a level of catchiness that you can't help but rock your head to. Even with the music being so approachable, the level of technical skill displayed by the band is still impressive. Lyrically, they range from Stephen King references to the mistreatment of Native Americans to the shadiness of the record industry, all with strong vocal performances from Joey Belladonna. Despite this not being my preferred genre of music, I can appreciate the production quality and excellent songwriting that went into this album.||

Incredible musicianship is showcased all throughout the album with the booming bass & snare drums, funky basslines and dark, aggressive guitar licks. PJ Harvey doesn't try to show off with her voice, instead her intense, dramatic, grungy style inject each song with a ton of personality. As noted by others, I would've liked to have her vocals mixed just a tad bit louder as well as the low end in a couple tracks. Unfortunately, the band would only last for another album after this one before disbanding, causing PJ Harvey to continue as a soloist. I'm glad she kept going because this marks the start of an incredible career from one of the best British singer-songwriters.||

Comments: ||Definitely a must listen before you die, as it literally says the book, for me Coldplay peaked both here, X&Y and Parachutes and this one self-explains itself pretty much why is this good, in this one Chris really perfects the art of complement the band's sound with the piano in some of their most epics songs such as Scientist and Clocks, and the emotional weight the whole project has can really hit you deep down in a moody day (like this one, i fr cried listening to The Scientist when the chorus came in), beautiful project, I just hope they come back to stuff like this again someday||

Comments: ||Iconic sound, iconic band, definitely a moment in Alt Metal, Serj's voice is just one of the most precious things between the vocalists of the genre, and that gives the band's and the album's sound consistency me thinks. My specific issue with this one is that it just feels incredibly repetitive after 4 songs in, I mean the sound is still consistent as I said but it really feels like nothing changes through the whole album, not even a distinguished body of intro or outro, etc.||

||I'm so glad I got to indulge in some SOAD today. Fucking love this band. Maybe this album was chosen because it came first as far as breaking new ground in the genre but the fact is SOAD arrived on this one and it's as raw as any of their other albums. Very ADHD friendly music where you never know what's going to happen next and Serj has the perfect vocal range and personality to align with the topics and themes presented in such an aggressive, in your face way. I wouldn't say it's my personal fave SOAD album but it's very good.||

Comments: ||Oh boy oh boy, off to an amazing review again... Something light to start: This album alone is the definitive form of hip hop from mid-90's. MIND YOU WHAT THOSE WORDS MEAN PLEASE, an era where West Coast Rap was owning the scene left right and front, a mfer from Brooklyn showed up out of nowhere, dropped this masterpiece, putted the East Coast back on the map again, and consolidated himself as the King of New York, ON HIS FIRST FULL ALBUM. The way Biggie gives a lyrical and skill masterclass in every single track of this album is just fucking mind blowing, like that flow, the delivery, the storytelling, the facility to move through the beat spitting those bars, is just literally what RAP it's about: Rhythm And Poetry.||

||What's best about all of the above mentioned, is that Biggie somehow plays it the most simple way possible, specially in this one, where literally anyone who's not even familiar with hip hop can sit, listen through it, understand everything and vibe through it, is just the beauty of simplicity and perfection together delivered. Compliment that with such a deep lyricism, where the guy goes between fame problems, facing crime life while growing up in BKN, addictions, even fashion style change, etc., and all of that is perfectly synthetized in this album, and that's what it probably makes it a timeless masterpiece, like if you think about 90's rap, there's just simply no way this album comes past the 2nd or 3rd to think of.||

||About the album itself, it's incredibly fascinating how almost every song's hook is just so iconic and, idk, catchy, at the very first listen even, and the beats, all built into the most iconic boom bap drums you'll ever hear, doesn't get behind at all, every single one is just simply so beautifully done, once again another amazing point of this whole album.||

||NOW, my rating is more about how impactful it was for me personally, and I gotta be completely honest saying Biggie wasn't the first dude I got into, so I had a bit of background behind before going through his stuff, and I gotta say, even with how iconic and essential he was for the era, specially with this one, I think his legacy prevales even much more with his postume album Life After Death.||

It's a classic and as everyone mentioned its a damn shame we didn't get to see more than one more album from Biggie but this one is perfect enough for my 10. Comments: ||Coldplay's second album sees the band entering into a more pop-centric version of the alt rock style they showcased in their debut Parachutes. The opener, Politik, immediately sets the tone with its bright string arrangements, Chris Martin's angelic echoey croons and how much they play with space throughout each section. The atmosphere is grandiose and theatrical and tells the listener to expect an album that is more punchy and catchy than its predecessor. The sharp, sticky melodies keep going throughout tracklist, especially in songs like In My Place, The Scientist and Clocks. In some ways, I miss the more atmospheric, dreamy quality of Parachutes and it gave Coldplay a more unique sound; whereas this album has the band really wear its inspirations on its sleeves with similarities to Muse's Origin of Symmetry and Radiohead's OK Computer. Still, the album is a fun listen and the production quality is crisp and well balanced.||

Comments: ||What a jarring, bombastic debut album from alt metal oufit System of a Down. Their distinct sound is charactered by bite-sized chaotic instrumental chunks that are tied nicely together by Serj Tankian's varied vocal deliveries and characters. Within a track, they will present an aggressive, chunky thrash metal riff then immediately follow it up with soft, twinkly acoustic guitar melodies without a slow fluid transition because it all works narratively. Despite being put in the "nu metal" genre, System of a Down pulls together inspiration from a variety of styles like funk, punk rock, prog metal and art rock. The run times on a lot of the songs tend to be shorter, which is perfect when they are able to quickly develop a fully fleshed out song that doesn't overstay its welcome. The band also understands that an album needs to flow with highs and lows, providing much needed cooldown moments like in Spiders. There are moments in the album where some of the instrumental layers could have been polished a bit more and provided a bit more clarity. Nonetheless, this is a great debut from one of the most distinct sounds in 90s/00s alt metal.||

BLUES BREAKERS - JOHN MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS AND ERIC CLAPTON

Comments: ||Yeah... this is most definitely the biggest surprise I've had so far in the list, I literally never heard of these guys before like, not even ringing a bell, just the name Clapton on it gave me a little bit of hint of where could this have gone but it just wasn't it at all, this is just an amazing Blues Rock album, and I'm trying to say, one of the REALLY GOOD ones, the way every instrument articulates between the melody in a perfect way, each and everyone also have their moment of shine between the album, also the heavy swings to Blues Jazz and the adding of a lot of air instruments suited the songs like a perfect glove, I tell you I was literally shooked when What'd I Say drum solo came in it just blew my mind so hard, amazing sound, amazing elements overall, the voice is nice but I would wish for it to be a little bit more important in it but it's not the case, still managed to be good. I'm really happy with this one.||

lastfm does not officially support adding old plays

you have to scrobble them one by one

through their api

and they have a cap of ~2500 scrobbles per day

||One of the best debut albums i ever listened, such clear intentions regarding their unique way of riffing and wild, almost maniac energy, with a political charged messege on the lyrics delivered with the operatic and versatile range of Serj Tankian, but with a poetic and a bit abstract way to do it.

The album starts with a banger after the other, with Sugar being a moment where the band shows their tongue and cheek side even tackling dark themes, bringing to the table their Armenian influences.

Of course this was the first step for the band on being one of the more influencing bands of the “Nu Metal” era, giving zero fucks with the sound of those type of bands, and creating a timeless style on their own in the process, that stays one of the kind and gets better with time.||
