Yea they were hired because there wasnt a candidate with noticably better qualifications
right
why?
The dude is like 31
he's 40
Oh true he has to be eligible to be president
4 years of 'active combat' deployment as a marine, bachelor's of art and a full fledged law degree from yale
why is he a DEI hire
Because his political experience is 1 year of being a senator
how long was obama's political experience before he became president?
was he a DEI hire too?
Trump has won twice with zero prior political experience
Sit down for this one but presidents are elected not picked
vice presidents are elected too that's why they are on the ballot
they aren't elected separately unforunately
I wonder how many people even consider the vp
politics in the US, and really most of the world, isn't subject to the same hiring standards that nearly all other jobs and positions in every industry and field is subject to. I wish there was a qualifications process, but there isn't. Trump won twice as president with zero prior political experience and really any experience that would be relevant for running a country.
Like i have no problem saying biden was picked for being a white guy in 2008
Its the vp position, thats what theyre there for
but not because of his 35+ years of political experience (at the time)?
and all the connections he had made?

Im sure it helped but at the end of the day
Who else was even in the running back then. I unironically cannot remember
clinton
Obama needed an old white guy because people are racist lol
who made a deal to drop out in exchange for being one of the worst secretaries of state ever
so people do care who is VP and are voting for the president-vice president candidates on the ballot accordingly?
Idk, but that seems to be what the people picking vps believe
I don't really get this cyclical argument that they are simultaneously useless and irrelevant and nobody cares about the VP but also they matter and people vote based on their race/whatever
Do you not remember the kamala veepstakes
You cant believe that party strategists might be disconnected from political reality?
I 100% believe that
Yea see
both parties, all parties, these people are completely disconnected from the general public, reality, etc.
they live in their own little world
and we're not invited unfortunately
Party strategists 100% believe that the vp has to balance the ticket
Idk if voters actually care
true enough, I agree
Kamala Harris campaign was a completely shitshow after DNC, she had a legitimate chance to win prior to that. Also not her fault she had like a week to figure out who her VP should be
party strategists fucked that up so badly they have ruined the democrats for at least 4 years if not more
I mean walz was the right pick
if he was allowed to be himself after being picked, yes
Shouldve made him do all the cringe "centrist" podcasts
LMAO
they genuinely thought that relying on hollywood endorsements, big mass media coverage, and somehow throwing it in with the freaking cheneys was the right move
most of the world would laugh at us for complaining about gas being $3 a gallon
Yea the problem is that trump made those the standards he wants to be measured by
agreed
Price of eggs definitely not going down between the mass deportations and bird flu
yeah too many chickens have been killed
Maybe they can turn that gitmo camp into an egg farm
somehow Canadians are paying half the price we pay though, time to invade
but like family from denmark are paying 15 krones a LITER for petrol, I'd go crazy if I had to pay that
Already stripped them of human rights, might as well add slave labor to the list
that's like $8 USD a gallon
dont worry Canad is next after Panama and Greenland
I've never actually liked a politician before him
I know
Oh yea didnt he announce tariffs on mexico and canada today
Trust me
Like fr fr this time
we're all fucked
aluminum prices
lumber prices
everything's about to skyrocket
Chat do i sell my etf or does the market not care
My eggs
Honestly the market probably doesnt care
it doesn't even make sense putting tarrifs on allies this close
Tesla earnings down 70% but the stock went up lol
put it on china if you really have to, isn't that what he promised
why fuck over the mexicans and canadians
and in turn fucking over ourselves lol
You gotta get the money in when you wanna replace every other tax with tariffs
nothing is gonna be normal for years, is it ...
:)
I'm so tired already, at least I have some vacation time in February
"allies"
promised myself to pick up a new hobby of some kind
I can only laugh at the people who said he wouldn't actually do anything
they are even closer than allies
they are practically vassalage
I kept telling people he's going to do exactly what he has been saying he'll do and more/worse
because that's what happened the first time
sure, eventually he was somewhat reined in because of midterm elections, covid, etc.
but also he didn't have the right people (loyal) in place and lacked experience
this time he's all in
and has even enemies taking the knee
The real fun starts when the sc overturns birthright citizenship
I have a feeling they will
in fact, there's a higher than zero chance that at least one if not two more justices will be replaced under trump
and that won't even be all of it
assault weapons bans will be overturned by sc
so will a lot of regulatory stuff
like agencies rule making
Did you see the bill that would allow a third trump term?
I did see that, and congress DOES have the ability to amend the constitution, scary stuff
even if unlikely
but never say never
they are totally putting his ugly mug into the mountain
I like the anti obama clause in there
what I'm worried about is not him running again
it's his legacy running after him
whether Vance or another Trumper 2.0
because those millennials/zoomers indoctrinated by the Trump movement will be even worse than he has been
I can see Tucker Carlson taking a turn at being a candidate eventually, maybe not until 2030's though
but even he wouldn't be as bad as a true believer
Luckily trumps sons have the charisma of a dead horse
Melania is preparing Barron as the true successor
expect his turn at candidacy in 20 years
20?
unless we change the consitution
god emperor barron
he's certainly the right size or getting there
Hes gotta hit the gym, he still looks photoshopped
he's very young, he'll get there
he's the same age as like ...
TripleS Shion
and Lynn
and NMIXX Kyujin and NewJeans Haerin
that's all the 2006'ers I can recall
oh Haruna too, she just had her birthday
I suppose Eunchae is a 2006'er too, but very late 2006, doesn't count
This is gonna become one of those things where you can search her name and your birthday and see what she was hating on that day

also an open bolsonaro supporter

i mean one would be surprised if a main actress candidate on oscars turned out to be likely one of the most bigoted people i had ever seen
it's not even like, that early in terms of posts, some were from likely time of emilia perez sets
also has violated official oscar rules by targeting other contestants
There was nothing radical about it at all, you were being intentionally obtuse and you fucking know that.

she seems to have also committed to Hitler apologia

it is diabolical that this would not have resurfaced if not for brazilian social media users
it's not even like old, a lot of these are from like 2018-2022

hot take
she has now deactivated her account, like, damn
was there ever a right wing firewall in germany
like one would think this was going to happen at some point
This is out of date already. So Merz 's little liaison with the Afd literally just failed as after massive protests some people changed their mind about the whole not voting with nazis thing. His attempt at a law got voted down
And all he managed to do is significantly lower his chances of just casually cruising to chancellorship
And yes, yes there was. Clichees aside Germans are rather politically vigilant against nazis.
Still is worrying to see that
Which they are btw, Aft aren't "right wing" or nationalists. They're nazis.
It is, but we do what we can. The world wide populist rightwards push is obviously also present here, just can't let it win and gotta punish those who embrace it
Got written up at work for having lots of absences and tardiness within this month lmao
B)
Fuck Merz, fuck Lindner
I’d have to look at some polling, I haven’t paid attention to German politics really since the last election
It's definitely an interesting moment to observe. CDU completely had this in the bag, but Merz is an idiot and did the nazi gambit for no good reason
So here's hope it at least gets a lit closer
There's a reason no one in the CDU was letting this man anywhere near the position of power he has openly craved for the past 25ish years
i mean nazis are right wing
maybe a bit more further down the line but they are not out of it
Yes the point is that the afd isnt some moderate right wing party
they are also nationalists
not untrue

Upside is, I just have to take one look at the US to see how much worse it could be
If you wanna call it an upside to look at US politics
Cant wait for CDU cabinett with klöckner, spahn, dobrindt, wissing and scheuer
Insane that these people can even sleep at night while still being in politics lmao

what kind of misinformation are we talking about
Karla Sofía Gascón on why she deleted her X/Twitter account to @THR:
“I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request I am closing my account on X. I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter...

like she is not being alleged of anything she has posted it all herself
Lets talk about something relevant like how I got my puppy a bag of dogritos
does it need to be opened
Is that a chewing toy
not relevant / not misc chat topic
No and i hope it takes a while before she does
great dog though
Yeah its essentially a stuffed toy
i have a family dog that i like, i am more of a cat person though
all dogs are relevant
mods ban this guy

Are you sure, I think he generates, like, half the current message traffic
ban them permanently for an hour
very relevant 10/10 good boy
Hes gonna do this every 4 weeks isnt he
Really funny after finding out that some of my family members are voting for AfD
Because most of their points are speaking to them...
It's not like AfD wants to get rid of people like us or hate us or are dumb af noooooooooo
are the walls also speaking to them
Maybe the Walls are in their dreams too telling them to vote AfD
I don't wanna say bad things about your family, so I'll
and just say there's too many such people.
Remember how Trump said he "sent the military in and opened up the water flow" in CA? It appears he forced the Army Corps to just drain reservoirs into recently flooded farmland without telling local farmers or leaders. “In 25 years, I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Trump: "We're gonna put tariffs on chips. We're gonna put tariffs on oil and gas. That'll happen fairly soon. I think around the 18th of February."
economy is so over
Ah yes, pharmaceuticals, cause drug prices in the US are already so affordable
Need that sweet insulin? Sell your car. (For one shot)
My insurance wouldn't cover one of the meds I was put on for my chronic illness (screw united healthcare) so my family would pay $575 out of pocket for it
insurance companies: have you tried just not being ill
We have a private chain hospital owner (specifically medipol) as the health minister so the purpose here is to make healthcare systems obselete
Similar with our tourism minister owning a tour company, and our education minister owning a private school chain
I feel bad for the entirety of north america
canada and mexico will almost immediately go into recession, and we're setting the US up for a great depression level economic downturn soon after
I cannot really feel bad for north america specifically, i do feel bad but it is going to have a global impact more than certainly
Trump going erdoğanomics with the consumer goods tariffs and trying to force interest rates low will not help
I feel bad for an upcoming global recession, i do not feel satisfied that it is going to happen at a specific country, just to clarify myself here
this isnt anything to do with erdogan..
hes putting tarriffs on everything because thats what the US did 100 years ago
I am aware of us isolationism
But i think i can point out when someone lets large companies pay practically 0 taxes, put gargantuan consumer product taxes and tariffs, and act an economist to try claim inflation is caused by interest rates being high
is tariff basically tax addition to the price?
The froot sounds familiar
its kind of like an import tax
ah
putting a tariff on say, chinese made cars, is meant to be a kind of disincentive for people to buy chinese cars and instead domestic cars because it artificially makes the chinese car less competitive
the reality is that manufacturers just pass the price onto consumers which results in more inflation
the chinese evs look cool
I like the nicki verse about racing with and in China
if they can find a balance and not make everything out of plastic they'd be fine
i personally dont like it when they make everything all digital touchscreen and stuff too
but i'll admit the futuristic looking ones are cool
I want to own an ev when i have my job and hopefully electric development/infastructure increases
I just think evs would be more economic and environmental fuelwise, but i will say i am not competent when it comes to vehicles
In terms of i do not know vehicles like that
i kinda wish the future looked like these fruitger aero wallpapers
Assuming there's any actual thought being put into the tarrifs, the seemingly implied goals are to offset the income tax cuts that are coming
as well as incentivize people to buy American and eventually incentivize companies to bring manufacturing back into the United States
short-term though, they are absolutely going to pass the costs to consumers
if there's even a smidgen of hope that this is a temporary thing
Here in the midwest, most of the refineries aren't even setup to refine the light crude oil that the US extracts, it's mostly setup for heavy crude Canadian oil.
And like a significant portion of US housing depends on Canadian lumber and steel, and much of US manufacturing depends on their steel and aluminum and copper.
I just don't get it.
reckon trump will undo biden's torpedo'ing of the nippon steel thing?
If it's to spite Biden, sure, but that one is more likely to stay than not
The barrier to putting any thought into this is that trump still doesnt understand tariffs or trade deficits
it worked 100 years ago so it must work now
there is not and there wasn't last time either
I do wonder where these tariffs even come from
Like for his migrant policies you can see stephen miller out there giving interviews and that guy 100% believes all the non whites should be kicked out
Who in this admin actually believes in these tariffs tho
Trump really likes tariffs.
unironically the most dangerous man in his circle
Yea maybe its just his ideas for these and the others have to fall in line
and he has far more power this time than he did last time
one of the few that stuck to his side throughout everything
Yea that guy would actually go full hitler if he ever got the chance
gotta be pretty fucked to have even trump think you're going too far
and he's Trump's implementer-in-chief right now
But yea for the tariffs his minions will obviously go out and defend them
But you can tell their heart isnt in it
the US has tried to deport its own CITIZENS before
hell, a lot of Nazi Germany policies were inspired by the United States
for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Repatriation
The Mexican Repatriation was the repatriation, deportation, and expulsion of Mexicans and Mexican Americans from the United States during the Great Depression between 1929 and 1939. Estimates of how many were repatriated, deported, or expelled range from 300,000 to 2 million (of which 40–60% were citizens of the United States, overwhelmingly ch...
which also was a 100 years ago
I mean i give it half a year after that gitmo camp is running until the first citizen ends up there
some of his inner circle are saying he wants Gitmo to be turned into a super prison El Salvadoran style
The definition of citizen also isnt all that set in stone lol
automatic citizens often have a tough time proving their citizenships
especially children of those who became citizens at birth but didn't have citizen parents themselves
they get caught in deportation raids all the time
has been the case for decades
We had that shit figured out
lots of people just don't think about this stuff here until it comes to their doors, proof of birth, citizenship certificates, even passports are not a regular thing most Americans have
I mean... Miller is pretty much the type of guy who would have really loved coming up with solutions that are final for the Germans in the late 1930s
And that's not an exaggeration
which is ironic given he's old school Jewish
old school from a US perspective as in parents and grandparents being Yiddish speaking slavic/high german mixed ashkenazi jewish that came to the US before the leadup to WWII
he does seem to be an appreciator of Goebbels though so you're not too far off
then again if Trump gets inspiration from Hitler speeches, much of which were written by or at least supervised by Miller, nothing is surprising
Gonna put my stuff in bonds for now and wait i guess, seems like trump also reiterated tariffs on the eu
That didn't end too well for him last time
I moved 85% of my stuff to low interest stable stuff as well right around when Trump came to power
every year Feb-April is unstable
this year especially so
He basically all but said already that he will start a trade war with fucking Denmark to bully them into giving him Greenland
Whatever fuckface gave him that idea needs to be drowned in lego btw
this time he has the mandate to do whatever he wants at least in his first year or two, it won't matter that it'll hurt US citizens more than anybody but he doesn't seem to give a fuck.
UK is also about to get hit with tariffs separately from EU, at least the rest of EU have each other
What he still doesn't get though is that he can't start a trade war with a singular country in the EU
Cause that's not how the EU trade works
he seems to be the type to do things first then assess the consequences
*then blame [DEI, Biden, the woke left, trans people, Hillary's Emails]
He assesses consequences?
either way not fun times for any of us, it's only going to get worse and ironically help elevate China's position globally
especially as the EU seems to have little qualms about trading with China
I’d prefer people who work places are qualified thank you very much
Honest question, why should we?
Scary
All these self proclaimed super powers are horrible in their own way, China is no better or worse than the US
How dare you
Invaded way less countries and staged way less coups for that matter
welp
though these small plane crashes are way more common than one would like to admit
crashing into residential housing though ... less common
dei strikes yet again smh my head
hey it was supposed to be a response
dont worry, it will be for me
there we go
The ring/dashcam/firsthand phone videos coming out from this are unbelievable
some of the ones further way make it look like a missile strike
but the ones close by are absolutely insane
speaking of insane, TW: Death

jesus
So is there any answer for why this happened yet?
nope
so tragic
||https://x.com/BNODesk/status/1885484977673867584|| really does look like a missile coming down

there are some horrible images of bystanders caught on fire too 😔
JUST IN: The Pentagon is set to have Politico, the New York Times and NBC News vacate their physical office spaces, which will be replaced by the New York Post, OANN, Breitbart and Huffington Post.
Wheeee
media outlets have office space at the pentagon...?
Did not know they were interested in bgs that much
Ugh
media situation gets a lot worse
NEW: Dashcam video shows the plane crash in Philadelphia.

if they are trying to silence selena gomez who is quite uninvolved for an unicef ambassador, for an opinion, mass censorship seems near
it is not that normal for a government to target someone directly like this
i do not even like selena
well, it is normal if the government is trying to abolish press freedom
but you get the point
The government should not be going after private citizens
anyways, with how things are changing, looks like I'm unable to leave the US for the considerable future 👍
that is still a really weird thing for a white house twitter acct to put out
It very much is
that's what you get when you give the password to jr.
@thegaywhostrayd lmfao
This guy when obergefell gets overturned
We have a word for people like that in German called "Steigbügelhalter" - really just describes pretty much all the enablers
So anyway Sam, how does it feel to not even be real? Real world fae if you will.
Well, you're a zoomer, so can't say I'm surprised
the z word
not the tories
"You all can barely pay rent and food now and NHS is even worse off, yw" - Tories, probably
4 years after the vote
without the deal they wanted
or the alternative deal they wanted
or any deal
thanks tories
think LBC said the other day something like 60-70% of people who voted for Brexit now regret it
probably swayed a bit for the type of people who would willingly answer the question but,
would the EU even take you back if you reconsidered?
definitely
but not with the deal we had before
we'd be a "normal" member of the EU
I don't know... they'll probably force you to change to euros at least
yeah things like this
but our economy is a huge boost for the EU
and with trump trumping, Europe need all the alliances we can get
so now it just comes down to us to make the decision of who we want to ally with I guess
I know what i'd pick
Nah, that's actually optional, they just need to accept Euros as payment on equal footing as well. Plenty EU countries don't have the Euro
i'd assume it'd be a "recommendation" for when we join
you can do what we did, promise you will work towards it and then pretend you forgot about it
hahahaha
the pound being as strong as it is, i don't know if we'd ever willingly change
a lot of countries did that as grumpy says lol
I think denmark is the only one that said never ever and stuck by it but the others all promised to think about it lol
the thing is that we actually should work towards it
but the issue is that it became a political thing so it's in limbo
and it's easy thing to scare people with
It's not really the most relevant bit, basically. The actually relevant bit is the rules and regulations, where GB had so many exceptions and special agreements It's not even funny and absolutely no one in the EU liked that
And for some god forsaken reason they pretended they were mistreated because a bunch of Eastern Europeans worked the jobs no one else on their island wanted to work and quit
but Grumpy! We had to get rid of the immigrants (see current record immigration numbers) and give more money to the NHS (see NHS basically dying in front of us)
With the result of... no one doing said jobs, many of which were in NHS
maybe the brexit people just hated europeans and wanted more middle eastern and asian and african immigration
the brexit people wanted none of those people here
yeah turned out great for them huh
yep
The Brexit people were just insufferable populists who wanted power
got rid of the polish, replaced it with people who had zero cultural compatibility with the UK
Nigel doesn't actually fucking care if Britain is in the EU or not
None of these dipshits did or do
this was definitely a thing pre-brexit but it has amplified a lot in the last 5-10 years, whether brexit has anything to do with it im unsure
Putting that vote up to a simple majority yes/no was probably the dumbest political move of the 2000s (until trump won anyway)
Come now, surely no one would vote Leave
Have they even figured out what to do with northern ireland yet or is that still a mess
we went hard on the multiculturalism stance from the top level, with a population that was very split on the idea and a demographic of people who were immigrating that also didn't want to do it lol
in what sense?
Especially not when the remainers spent a combined 5 minutes ans 2 pounds on their campaign while the Brexiteers had a hugeass budget
yeah it was very naive to even have the vote with the mindset of "yeah no one will actually vote for this anyway who cares"
Remember the the busses
it seems to have been a trend for all over the place for the past 5-15 years, and now we're seeing the backlash
especially as we were being meddled, Putin
Well you need customs controls somewhere
yeah, the concept of multiculturalism makes tons of sense, IF the communities want to
if they don't overdo it too quickly as well
a slow trickle had worked especially all over the commonwealth for generations
But a border between ireland and NI is historically a wee bit problematic
And a border between britain and NI also isnt exactly convenient
true, i think some cultures are more open to it than others though
if you overdo it, even cultures more open to it are going to have a backlash of bizarre proportions
like Canadians are going through right now
I think the issue is more that governments really didnt give a shit what happens to the people once theyre here
the goal was likely just to get people in, not care what happens after
Get everybody a language course and into a job asap and they dont have to sit around in some refugee camp
Canada is doing that but way too many ppl to accommodate
Sounds like you need to do more
Canada has had a process of integration and assimilation better than anywhere else in the world
More workers more government money
but even they are overwhelmed because too many people too fast
yeah but it's not that easy is it
you need infastructure, healthcare and schools, housing
if you sync all that up with immigration, all is well usually
No its not but countries have had like 10 years to figure it out
Germany for example has really done fuck all for investments in any public areas for some reason
But rent control will save us
don't mean to put you in a weird spot but which are the unwilling communities? Is it Muslim communities?
UK has had a mix of everything
not specifically, but religious communities tend to keep more to themselves than for example the caribbean immigrants
we ofc have a high number of muslim immigrants so that's an obvious one to point, but i think it extends to most religious groups
also not saying it was a smooth transition for the Windrush generation and early caribbean immigrants
ahh I didn't even know that
but in the grand scheme, i feel like these days they have their own cultural areas and own parts that would be considered "British" culture
My parents are immigrants and I feel like the mentality of newer generation immigrants is very different. Like my parents were so unfamiliar with everything but knew they had to kinda abide my some things. What's the biggest culture clash ppl are facing over there?
I feel like the thing with these communities isn't unwillingness (not solely anyway), but the fact that they are in a rather hostile, often racist environment which makes them stick together more instead of mingling
There's no easy solutions to that
this is my own personal opinion, but there is a fundamental difference between immigrants versus refugees and asylum seekers.
immigrants who apply and move to a new country permanently are willing immigrants and are going there because they want to integrate into a new society
the latter were moved unwillingly initially due to various hostile conditions and never really intended to assimilate into their new environment
there really isn't, I wish there were more shared cultures in countries with multiple different cultures.
this is extremely generalized of course
but intent and mindset seems to play a major part
makes sense, tbh a lot of asylum seekers are also immigrants who just use it as a path to get in
Grumpy summed it up quite well above, there isn't always an environment of people who want to mingle and introduce people to their communities. And with how impoverished our lower class is currently, there can be even more reluctancy to introduce and welcome immigrants/refugees as they feel like they're "taking" stuff from the government that they should be getting
but the media also throws all of that way out of proportion
Well yea, refugees often have a harder time assimilating because at any point their country can become "safe" again and they get kicked out
Why would they even attempt to integrate then
and those people are just cheating, like those who jump over the safe third country agreement between US and Canada
The solution would be offering them a pathway to citizenship
Where integration to some degree is part of the process
I don't have tons of first hand experience with this topic so i don't want to try and give to heavy of an opinion, my area doesn't see a lot of change in community, it's a very old people town mainly
if there is a moderate flow of immigration with a varied quota based on their countries of origin and the numbers are proportionate to the rate of infrastructure growth (housing, hospitals, schools, etc.) and there are processes for integration such as jobs qualifications and language training, I don't see why it would ever cause issues even in the most unaccepting of cultures
mmm I did hear some who've done this
but the problem is none of those things are ever in place and nothing is synced together
like you said above they can be kicked out at any time, but also if things become safe they can choose to leave, and id assume 9/10 times they're hoping and assuming things will settle down and they can go home so they'd feel no point in trying to gain citizenship
Depends on what they build up while being here
Like if youve worked here a few years, you will have developed relationships, your kids will have gotten used to living here and you dont necessarily have something to go back to in your home country
I think they bank on the idea that by the 2nd generation, the kids of immigrants are usually fully assimilated.
And even if they do intend to go back, quite few people are really happy sitting on their ass all day waiting for the next round of food stamps when they could be working
if they had only focused on bringing young couples who are planning to have kids, sure
but often they are bringing in young men to create a lower working/labor class to suppress wages
and then those men bring their elderly parents who then tax the healthcare system
Theres no "they" bringing them in
every authority in charge is a "they"
liberal, conservative, municipal, state or federal
Yea but thats not how the causal chain works
The countries are sending young men because they have the best chance of making it
and all the while, the government economists are artificially inflating the GDP with high immigration while lowering the GDP per capita
that's true but they also usually marry back home and bring their wives. I've even heard of a trend where young women are getting educated and getting student visas then bringing their husbands over instead of other way around.
In contrast the ukranian refugees are largely women and nobody complained about how they cant be used to drive down wages
(Because ukraine is drafting the men)
we're gonna get so fucked if the majority of Ukrainians decide to go back
if you don't think mass immigration into the west of the past 5-15 years has been a very conscious and intentional movement by various governments, then I don't know what to tell you.
regardless of their political alignments
I see this argument that cutting off the supply of immigrants or deporting them is going to fuck over the economy and bring up prices and such and such a lot here in the US right now, but isn't that fundamentally inhumane?
like our entire system depends on below minimum wage illegal migrants who are being exploited like slave labor? I see that as something fucked up, and if fixing it will cause economic pains, then so be it.
either do what schmali says and give them a path to permanent residency and citizenship
or cut off this bizarre lower class system
well put
I mean if you wanna spend more money in other countries to fix them, im all for it
Foreign aid isnt too hot in the public opinion right now tho
That's not true, really. Plenty more men among those than people seem to think. (Speaking from first hand experience on this one). Main difference with refugees from.Ukraine is they didn't get here on a boat through the Mediterranean or in the back of an airtight Uhaul truck, they're mostly pretty well off in comparison to what is generally tossed into the "those darned refugees" talking point pool
They also have an easier time adjusting cause 1. Plenty of them have relatives here and 2. They have very similar societal structures
they're mostly white, similar cultures, already european, their plights resonates more with other europeans, and so on and on
did you have all the insane people shouting "how can they be refugees, look at how pretty their cars are!" too?
Obviously western countries want immigration but idk how you can look back at 2015s migrant crisis and think merkel had some scheme running to drive down wages
Probably
Thing is, Merkel was still right in her general stance. She just fucked up the response
Merz would've closed to border and sent German shepherd attack dogs after anyone who dares cross
I mean they did try that during covid, so clearly the borders could be closed
they just chose not to
Eh
schengen zone be damned and all that
Which was the correct (human) choice.
Germany doesnt even have the capacity to properly close our borders
Yea you can do checkpoints
sure, but you have to consider the state of your country and its preparedness to accept such a mass of human migration as well
But you wont control everybody and 100m over they can just take the side road
sounds like you need a wall
they had a wall before it was cool
indeed they did
One of the reasons the cdus stunt this week was dumb as fuck btw
well it seems soon merkel's party will be back in power, let's see how they do (and their inevitable partnership with afd)
We even had the kind of wall a ladder didnt get you over
We absolutely do though, just gotta hire some more custom agents, basically. Cause trust me, well into the 90s border controls were the norm, not the exception
Yea we can talk about it in 10 years then
and today there are drones that can do the job too
Customs agents dont grow on trees
Are you saying they're root vegetables
I guess potatoes are more German
they're like bamboo, it takes five years before the first shoots
pun ... probably unintended
Nah
all the stories of people escaping to west germany from here would play out very differently if the communist party had drones
We are getting cdu/spd and its gonna be another 5 years of nothing being done
the polls are all over the place, it's gonna be a nail biter
The stunt this week is probably gonna end up hurting the greens again somehow
Just please dont let the fdp get in again
I can even accept merz for that
booktok ruined faes for me
Thing is, Merz turned himself into someone you simply can't go into a coalition with
Without any necessity to do so
Just casually getting the nazis on board and causing spontaneous mass protests around the country
(Which are still going btw)
All for a non binding recommendation and a badly thought through law that didn't even get approved
Dumb fuck just has no business being chancellor
i agree, but the cdu will probably do it anyway and the greens probably would too
Oh, I know but on thr current trajectory this dumbass move was probably the only thing that could make the race not 100% decided already
There's been literally hundreds of thousands people protesting today alone
Basically in every bigger city across the country
(Well, 10s of thousands per city, obviously)
https://fxtwitter.com/PopBase/status/1885757366093889943
...all those posts mentioned are from 2018-2023, some likely during Emilia Perez set, hardly 10-20 years ago that is...
Bro just needed to sit back and do nothing for a month

It's more, actually
i missed some? fantastic news
Scholz winning again only because the cdu threw away their lead last second would be very funny
Both funny and sad
Basically what Laschet did, but more nazis
The FDP deciding to jump into that boat was also peak FDP behavior
At least some of them actually found a conscience under the fridge

Best Paris Jilton moment is definitely her death scene in House of Wax
I guess we really are going on an economic war with Canada and Mexico
probably others like EU and everybody else next
US is gonna get sanctioned by the rest of the world isn't it....
this is the most pointless unnecessary economic war ever
Out of all of these only one makes sense, even by Trump world metrics. The "pressure Canada into becoming the 51st state by putting tariffs on their maple syrup" approach won't work, that's for sure, neither will the "little plastic blocks price hike, they're a stepping (on) hazard anyway" angle
He told everybody he was gonna do it and people voted for it
It's still pretty funny the main reason he got voted back in was the economy... which will get much worse for the average consumer now
Dont worry, he will try to fire the fed chair and set interest rates himself
Inflation is solved
Can and cant are hard to predict for the us president these days
Well, he can write an EO that says he's fored I guess, but the fed chair can just ignore it cause that's not actually how things work
In a constituional crisis i would bet on the president for now
The supreme court is gonna discover a long forgotten page of the consitution to make up some new presidential powers
yeah if he really wills it and wants to fire the fed chair, he'll do it
the reason why he can put tariffs right now are all the emergency powers he granted himself and the white house on day one
either way Powell's term is up in a year
if he isn't renewed for a third term
I don't know if it's coherent, did you see him edit the kamala tweet 3 times then change his pfp to her
no lol I just saw the #newprofilepic post
then the shes very nice sorry to the kids post
UPDATE: The text of the China EO is out now as well, and the de minimis exception is also suspended for Chinese imports.
probably a bigger deal than people will let on
The what now
de minimis means there’s a value that they don’t charge import tax on
so there’s gonna be a ton of stuff held up at customs
I guess the "We never pay customs on anything :D" era is over for Americans then
Although i sorta doubt they have even a fraction of the required processing capacity for this shit
(not talking about computers btw)
if they are suspending it, then they are charging it on everything
so its not just gonna be small temu/aliexpress slop
regardless of value
yeah
yep that's usually the case
although stuff slips through all the time when it's regular mail
or DHL lol
either way this is pretty bad and it's only the first salvo
i guess one could say that such personal data was... sensitively taken
look at it from a positive light
all this dismantling means we can rebuild it!
they're hellbent on burning it all down
so let it all burn
they screamed about the great reset so much, turns out it was all projection
LOONA in 2019:
evilcorp egg
as long as the rest of the world don't just roll over, the US could really fuck themselves in the long term here
it depends on how it escalates from here
if america is really hellbent on this path, they can do a lot of damage before they suffer
Canada putting tariffs on specific products they can get elsewhere is the best way to retaliate imo, the average Canadian shouldn't feel it as much as a blanket tariff
I am not sure what the scale of their domestic production is like, but I know every time they tried to do something, an American company bought them out ...
probably shouldn't have allowed that to happen
true
i imagine this will boost trade between Canada and the EU
(China also probably)
but then again they had no reason to doubt their alliance with the US, the Canadians were there every time the US called for them
this is a rude wakeup call
hopefully trump forgets that nz exists
I wonder how it will go at the next election, if Trump can't stand again. Alot of candidates will want to be Trump 2.0 and go all out, but Trump does actually hold back a little bit and say things like "I'm not sure if that is true" when refering to something he supports but knows won't win him votes to come out right behind."
ted cruz mightve fucked that up a little this week though
depends what map he has i guess
I remember he wasn't too happy with NZ not letting nuclear subs park nearby
back in the day
maybe he has forgotten
thats been a problem for every US admin lol
yeah but they hadn't been shoot-your-ally happy as Trump is this time
then again too many billionaires have bunkers in NZ, don't worry nothing will happen
thiel had his latest thing denied consent so he'll have to make do with a bunker instead of a mansion
Alot of it could be bluster though, if he actually deports millions of people the rich companies who rely on their labour will suffer, if he puts in place large tariffs there will be large inflation on those goods and people will become unsatisifed. I can see him continually making a lot of noise but it not actually materialising in the end
that's the ideal scenario at this point
but it's too optimistic for me
the sad part is much of what him and his people are trying to say could make sense if they didn't approach it like gangsters
should the US be bringing back domestic manufacturing and do less outsourcing after what we experienced during covid and with the state of global politics nowadays? sure
should the US stop relying on near slave labor to buoy many industries? sure
Trudeaus speech was actually v good
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday that Canada will respond to Donald Trump's tariffs with 25 per cent tariffs on $155 billion of U.S. goods.

best way to do it
I guess this is at least a better legacy for him to leave on than what he was facing when he first resigned
he can't bring parliament together to go over this more can he
or else he'll get kicked out
probably
he's done anyway, the next prime minister up there is likely the former bank of canada/bank of england governor
and then elections very shortly after
probably the worst timing though to be doing this as his government basically has lost their mandate now
and trump will take every advantage of the situation
I genuinely think the threat of absorbing/annexing Canada was never a joke from Trump and his people
it might not happen during his administration, but he's setting the stage up for it
same for Greenland
Panama Canal re-takeover might happen during his administration though
bruh
Safe to assume that was always just a deflection so his talking heads dont have to defend the insane shit he says
Musk vs Nestle is just evil vs evil
yea lmao
This is still the dumbest big evil corp lawsuit in history. Not advertising on a platform isn't a boycott in the first place.
Bro acting like buying ad space on Twitter is mandatory for everyone
We'll see the EO with that within a month
Nah, that'd be for Truth Social

CEO of Canada’s 2nd biggest company defends Trump’s tariff demands, slams Trudeau for not stopping trade war https://t.co/mILDZmTCxw
Shockingly, Canadian billionaires are also scum
(Shopify owner btw)
kind of ironic given Trump also had an axe to grind with Shopify for some of their "leftist" policies and activism when it came to what clients they would accept and which ones they asked to leave their platform
I remember that one clearly since our company made deals to serve those abandoned clients lol
freaking Starmer though, kissing Trump's ass apparently to get better trade deals amidst this economic war
Trump spoke very favorably of him when he was interviewed after getting off the plane
That's the only thing Trump cares about at the end of the day, people kissing his ass. Trudeau couldn't exactly give in though and neither could Starmer should he be elected. A pm doesn't have the power to make Canada the 51st US state
Easy to talk big when you're just a populist hack
Effective February 4, 2025, the government is imposing 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the United States (U.S.).
this should solve the conflict about the tariff addition nonsense

idk, a ton has happened

Trump also threatened South Africa with action on Truth Social, not surprising given there is the Apartheid baby puppeteering him from behind
even outside that, atleast a ton happened in Dallas and LA
another thing that happened
sonic 4 appearance is looming on horizon

Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts.

is there a filter or an add-on that allows automatic bot blockade
that was my question
i do not enjoy bot spammage on my comments
The short answer is, no.
damn
YOu forget Elon got rid of all the bots, these are are very real people.
Idk if that blue wall addon is still around
Auto blocked everybody with twitter premium
i had to privatize my account
because i could not manage to block all the bot followers
Honestly though, Russian bot farms might have better AI models than deepseek and chatgpt combined

Your point being?
i mean
why would you want a freshman in college with access to treasury payment systems
bad internship!
tbh I'd rather have a random freshman in college access to that than Elon
theres no point its just weird
Unfortunatly it's both though
these are his lackeys bro thats the same
there are teenagers all across chat servers having access to private and most personal data of all people including mine in turkey

totally unrelated (sorry), but anyone here who's seen the grammys this year? i yet have to see the performances, but heard that it wasnt that spectacular
doechii win
oh yes! saw it on insta
i wonder if the odd reaction by general populace was due racism, kendrick and beyonce won major this year
Award show performances haven't been spectacular on decades
zoomers dont want to play world of warcraft
beyonce has finally won aoty, though because i am not a country fan i am not the biggest fan of cowboy carter
true true
if someone else had made it i would like it less probably
all the people chanting not like us and the whole saga behind the song just feels performative to me
No idea why they even let him in at this point
not like us is a very good single though for sure
not saying it did not deserve it's awards, it had a big impact
Pretty sure its a fetish
Technically she is wearing something
she just wanna be like the transparent king jyp
I am glad that Doechii won something
She was just protesting against societal norms, bro
also the Weeknd made up with the grammys
so that feud is over
You just don't understand art /twt comments, probably
nah twt understandably is finding it odd, some comments are extreme like worrying if she is a victim of possible human trafficking
but not a lot of kanye defense going on here
atleast on pop culture pages
i haven't been in maga pages i would not know what it would be like there
That aside Drake got totally cooked lol
he had been also getting backlash for promoting usage of AI in music
Kanye doing stupid shit nothing new
being criticized for using ai doesn't even register on the totem pole of shit he gets criticized for
there is also the first ai-assisted song to win a grammy award, though it was not generative ai that was used there
regardless of ai-usage i just do not care for beatles music
i do not think they are the most overrated group in the world, i am just not their target audience
and that is more than fine
exactly
saying someone is not the target audience of a group from the sixties is very funny to me
like doh
Bjork had also been in a contraversy for AI-usage a few months ago
https://FxTWitter.com/bjork/status/1856352991038554256

We would like to share our “Nature Manifesto,” a sound installation at the Centre Pompidou @CentrePompidou, Paris. Produced in collaboration with the IRCAM @Ircam using AI software, this immersive sound piece gives endangered and extinct animals a voice by merging their sounds with our words. We wanted to share their presence in an architecture...
Thank you Centre Pompidou @CentrePompidou, everyone who made Nature Manifesto happen, and all the people that took it in.
We were happy to see the conversations that the use of AI in Nature Manifesto sparked !! Below is a message from Björk:
“ the flood of all things from AI is overwhelming !! i am super grateful for your concerns about it...
though i will say, if there is an artist that genuinely would be curious about AI instead of wanting to gain cheap commodity from it, it would be Bjork
regardless of the ethics around, yeah
for example i like bossa nova as a genre
i do not listen to it a lot, but i like the genre and i like the songs
and you were not the target audience of that, you just like it. different things
i like coffee shops
i listen to some genres more than others, there are two genres i will say that i won't listen to, maybe in some cases i will give a chance but it will not satisfy me
these are country (as a non american i just cannot relate to it, i do not think the whole genre is bad i just am not going to be able to feel myself in the environment)
and turkish rap (i like rap, turkish rap is just so strayed away from the purpose of being an alternative method of culture here)
no good flow, every kind of bigotry, ass beats, people being felons that commit personal monstrosities or run cartels, it is quite mainstream but i just do not see the appeal
we had someone with good flow (alizade), but they have deported her to azerbaijan for "promoting drug usage" in her lyrics
even the motivating flows are ass, it just feels like cultural appropriation
arabesque i am also a bit off, because the genre itself atleast in turkey, is well known to be a regime tool that is used to make people blame all their difficulties at fate or on god's plan instead of keeping people in power accountable
it's not that no good songs came from it, but even since the 80s, it was a political popularization of the genre here
it is also a widely popular genre especially among the populace, it's either that or turkish rap at this moment, that those two are the most popular
it is not to be confused with ethnic or regional folk music, which i do enjoy
it's also a larger issue of turkish artists, like other important people, more often than not shilling for the government for easy fame or money
even for supposedly protest genres, you'll not really find that much protest in these songs or in the artists
i am a fan of songs being about whatever one can think of, but restriction due amount of topics being allowed to be mentioned or handled does suck
i am not calling the genre bad, if i was american i could have resonated with it more
true that
i just cannot take it seriously because it feels too yeehaw to me
posty album 🔥
not a bad genre by any means, definitely enjoyable
idrgaf what music is being put on, if the vibes are good ill go with it
I just had a good call with President Trump. at this point I don't even care, I just want it to accelerate to see what the end results will be like, because this "we're gonna delay it by a month to see how you behave" bullshit is unacceptable and makes the US even more of a joke than it already was.
Are you saying you can't just solve problems that have been decades in the making by ordering a few troops to a border that has literally nothing to do with the actual problem at hand, just to stand there and look pretty?
Next thing you say is that this is fundamentally more of a US issue than that of their surrounding countries and they need to put in the fix on their side or something. Or that the opioid crysis is homemade or something.

About the grammys, yeah
Like i am aware that billie was the more high profile name, but the remix was not the more viral or historic one
Like if one would think about it, Girl So Confusing remix is the anti-Not Like Us
basically for 10 years Charli did not know that if Lorde even liked her or wanted to spend time with her, she had wanted to collab with Lorde bad but she was unavailable (she usually is unavailable, not in personal offense to her), and working it out in the remix is the ultimate response

Like, if there's one country everyone in that area hates even more than the Israelis it's the US
People memed about Trump sending US soldiers to die for Israel, but we live in the timeline where memes become real.
fell for it again award
Obviously all the Trump supporters are in full rev trying to justify and defend this.
You hear arguments like "he'll give them all right to return once it's a civilized area to live in again"
yeah that worked out great the first nakba
It's ok, the US has lots of experience in forceful displacement solutions. They'll manage.
I've even read one from a friend who is a democrat voter but didn't like Kamala trying to mental gymnastics this one.
"who else was going to fix it all, American bombs and missiles did the damage anyway, we'll own up to it"
All the reactions ive seen is leftists going "how could the democrats do this?"
i'm sure the enlightened jill stein voters are extremely happy
I heard jill stein has successfully re-entered hibernation so good for her
Though to be entirely fair, if there is a single country on earth who could go into Gaza and stop the genocide, it would be the US.
They (as in Trump's mind) just seem to be set on doing their own genocide instead.
There's a ceasefire ongoing right now y'know
hope it holds
Same here
Trump's comments don't help at all, not one bit
I mean, I guess displacing everyone in the area will prevent any genocide happening in it once it's done
I still think Israel should just annex both sides and give them residency/citizenship and call it a day, let the next generations figure it out internally.
two state solution will never work
I think there's a lot more behind the scenes than this alone
Iirc last time Trump made big promises like this he ended up compromising for something else and let the other leaders feel like they managed to get him to compromise. I think as a business man he might be trying to do the same thing here.
"We're taking over Gaza" -> "No you can't do that" -> "Okay fine I won't if you demilitarize Gaza" -> "Guys we're demilitarizing BUT we get to stay here in our land and we went up against the president of the US"
I don't think neither Israel nor the US want to bother paying for the transfer
It feels more like they're just trying to apply pressure
you're giving him too much credit
Trump is a smart business man theory in 2025
At least that's what I hope, Netanyahu is backing him but he's a snake so I don't think he would've gone for something like this otherwise
acting like a business man with his track record on world stage realpolitik seems like a recipe for disaster, it hasn't even been 2 weeks ffs.
To whom exactly, Hamas won't care and unlike with Canada and Mexico there's no one in gaza who could make a largely irrelevant symbolic gesture to make Trump feel like a special kid and make him happy
As in, I hate Netanyahu but he's a smart politician in that way.
There's barely anything left in Gaza, buildings, infastructure, etc.
I think they're banking on Hamas caring, they already mentioned they're open to discussions with the Trump admin.
Who is he trying to apply pressure to?
Well "caring" about losing their power in the strip/losing land
Hamas being back in control in Gaza after 15 months is still just hard to swallow
Realistically the US swooping in would change literally nothing
Hamas just watched like 40k palestinians be killed because of them, whats trump gonna do to make them stop lol
now if the US decides to go in non-militarily, to actually do what he said about the bombs and mines, US does have the expertise in that...
They do not have more firepower in the area than Israel and far less knowledge about whatever tf is left of the terrain
The south still does have infrastructure but for the Gazans it's more of an honor thing regardless. They'd rather live/die in Gaza than leave, that's why I think the "solution" Trump proposed is unrealistic and delusional but might apply to get conversations going
It's not just Hamas either, the Palestinian Authority might start making moves to discuss things as well
It's not about "honor", it's their fucking home. Come on now.
Does nobody remember what his son in law said a while ago?
Trump basically repeated that today
Middle Eastern Riviera
No it actually is about honor LOL that's why they want to return to their old homes from 80 years ago, it's not just about Gaza. That's what the struggle is for at the end of the day
REPORTER: You are talking tonight about the US taking over a sovereign territory. What authority would allow you to do that? Are you talking about a permanent occupation?
TRUMP: I do see a long term ownership position
Also this is already kinda breaking the no war rule so we might wanna stop the discussion here
It's all speculation on our end regardless
The war is over tho
Well it's still a war, ceasefire or not
The ceasefire could stop at any moment unfortunately
I really hope it doesn't but still
ownership position is an insane comment
that's a real estate developer mindset not a world leader one
That's what I mean by him talking like a businessman btw
He just doesn't understand the mindset of the people living there
Bro wants to be in an "ownership position" of a lot of places it seems
a big Trump hotel right on Al-Quzai'ya Beach
Empire where the sun never sets 2.0
The only way I'd accept this comment is if the US actually makes Gaza a US territory, and gives all Gazans past and present path to US citizenship
To be fair the beaches really were very beautiful, I think if the US did invest money into Gaza like they help Egypt and Lebanon monetarily that could be nice in the long run. Not for them to complete take over the region, but helping them develop it into something better and something that could improve the economy in Gaza when it does get rebuilt, that'd be nice
somebody's gotta rebuild after all
Yea the guy currently cancelling all us aid will definitely do that
hey it won't be foreign aid if it's a US territory

or a private Trump family beachfront
Cancel the DOE, we are building hotels in gaza now boys
sems to be the same thing nowadays
I think Trump is probably aiming for the Israel-Saudi deal to revolve around rebuilding Gaza tbh
But Israel will refuse to do that unless Hamas is gone/demilitarized
yeah Saudis are loving the "let's move 2 million people" part
