Well there's a lot that goes into the idea but like the way I see it, a lot of third world countries that try to catch up to developed nations ignore lots of things that developed nations have that took years of change in cultural norms. Stuff like democracy, free speech, rights to protest, investing in infrastructure, education, labour laws, safety regulations, reducing class inequality, and more. They catch up technologically somewhat, and improve economically which is great but I feel like without all the right barriers in place, all that growth just ends up in pockets of corrupt people, allows the rise of governments that are self serving/authoritarian, and leaves the average people to be continuously exploited. I should say, this isn't to say developed nations are perfect but it feels like there are more barriers and higher quality of life despite their many flaws as well. Maybe those developing nations can change as well but with the level of military a lot of their government's possess, it feels like it would require a lot more than just peaceful protests. I think China and Hong Kong are a good example of what I mean. If that don't make sense, just pretend im crazy
