I get the environmental argument around eliminating plastic straws, but I do think it is fairly obvious virtue signaling when so many other sources of plastic are still prominent. my real issue from a health perspective is that paper straws are often lined with and contain more harmful coatings and chemicals in the actual paper mix and glues than plastic straws by a significant amount.
And those things seep into the fluids passing through them, and are obviously more reactive and soluable than the plastic equivalents when you look at how long they seem to last, or how quickly the tips get soggy.
Any other proper offerings would likely cost way more to invest in and make than what they are currently offering or what plastic ones cost, and they'd have to pass those costs to the consumer, so it is a relatively unattractive area of development.
