There is a way for anyone that cares, as in just buying the already existing official ones. Never mind that they are at least twice the price of 3rd party products.

hoary charm
#

mfi is a certification, it doesnt mean /all/ third party cables are limited

blazing depot
#

They're not gonna give that certification to anyone they don't profit from. Come on now.

#

X % of every cable sale, Apple store style

hoary charm
#

well yeah no shit. their options are basically enforce mfi standards to make sure cables meet the correct specs or enforce nothing and run the risk of tarnishing their "it just works" approach to hardware

blazing depot
#

The joke here is, this would all be fine and just the usual Apple nonsense blabla "We're the best product, buy only us :D" shenanigans if it weren't for the "We'll limit everything else, even if it works cause it isn't certified"

#

There is just no justification for that part

#

At all

hoary charm
#

on the data transfer side no there isnt. there absolutely is on the power delivery side

trim flicker
#

Wacky apple things
I'm just wondering if a perfectly good cable that theoretically should work will be limited

#

Just because lack of certification

hoary charm
#

if its anything like lightning now then maybe, not sure. it used to be really hit or miss when they first rolled it out

#

no idea what its like now

trim flicker
#

It should work because it's just a spec thing right

#

unless they're doing some weird shit

eager parrot
#

the certification just like their lightning cables will be through a chip, which is basically artificially limiting every existing USB-C cable, whether they do or do not meet power delivery or data transfer rate standards that iphone would need

trim flicker
eager parrot
#

a chip in the cable

blazing depot
#

It's almost like there's no actual technical justification and they're just mad no one wants to buy their vastly overpriced cables and chargers

hoary charm
#

if you dont understand how bad the usb standard is then you cant really say theres no technical justification lol

eager parrot
#

I understand how bad it is

#

but this isn't to address that, this is to sell a certification chip to OEM cable makers as well as sell their own overpriced cables and accessories

blazing depot
hoary charm
#

the issue is that the usb consortium are dumb and fracture out their standards instead of enforcing a common feature set

eager parrot
#

Apple is part of that consortium

hoary charm
#

yep

eager parrot
#

it's not some evil cabal that could enforce things, they just develop standards and maintain specifications...

#

they have a compliance program but that's mostly left to the companies who are members, as well as OEMs who work with those companies and apply for vendor ID

hoary charm
#

which is fair, but that also doesnt really solve the problem of the standards allowing features to be mix and matched

eager parrot
#

fair, I agree with the USB problems, I don't think anybody here will deny it

#

I just can't see how paying Apple for a chip will resolve that

#

when there are existing standards and specifications

hoary charm
#

the mfi standard has a handshake of sorts that basically outlines what it supports, it doesnt replace the usb standard

#

it allows the cable to tell the phone "yes i support displayport and audio"

#

still has to use dp over usb

eager parrot
#

a proprietary handshake that gives apples certification money for every cable produced with their chip in it.

#

and denies fully compliant cables without chips from running at their full potential

#

I say this as an Apple user, other than PC, everything else I use is Apple

#

but I know bullshit when I see it

hoary charm
#

sure, never denied that. my point is that it at the very least ensures the cable you buy will work

eager parrot
#

it's the same thing they did with lightning

#

Anyway, at least Apple will finally move to USB-C

#

should have done it a while ago when their laptops and ipad pros did tbh

hoary charm
#

big agree, hate having this lightning cable dangling from my phone

eager parrot
#

lightning cable running at freaking USB 2.0 speeds smh

hoary charm
#

one can only hope they sort out their horrific wireless charging speeds too

halcyon iron
#

okay does anyone here know how equalizers work cuz im doing something but idk what

#

these sliders are a mystery to me....

#

ik i might sound stupid but 😭 im genuinely at a loss here

eager parrot
halcyon iron
#

idk atp

#

i was trying to see if i can tweak the sound to better suit me bc while i like sony's presets i feel like they're lacking something

#

but the issue is i never used an EQ and i have no idea how anything works aside from the clear boost slider

eager parrot
#

Are you listening on PC or phone or what platform?

#

oh phone

#

what headphones?

halcyon iron
#

sony wf-c500

eager parrot
halcyon iron
#

unless you count manual as a preset

eager parrot
#

right

#

it only allows you to modify five bands like that?

halcyon iron
#

yeah

eager parrot
#

so in that link above, let's look at the fixedbandEQ

#

they have 10 bands there, but you could kind of get some "guestimate" of what would sound good (they are EQing to harman curve) from that

#

I assume the "clearbass" part on the bottom is just a generic below 200 boost to bass

#

if you want more "bass" on those headphones, and the bass band isn't doing it for you, it might be because the tips aren't sealing very well in your ears

halcyon iron
#

my ears are weird
they're the only ones that fit me really well

#

so

eager parrot
#

there are foam tips you could buy that may fit better, but anyway let's try EQing it first and see what happens

halcyon iron
#

yup

#

i cant really test them rn but once i get home and mess around with what you sent me ill get back to you

#

its kinda dumb but its out of my control

eager parrot
#

so based on this EQ, but summed to 5 bands, what I would try on your software is -5.0 on 16K band, +2 or +3 on the 6.3K band, -3 or -4 on the 2.5K band, +1.5 or +2 on the 1K band, and just 0 on the 400 band. Then set Clear BASS to 0, try that with some music you're familiar with, and see if you need more bass or less bass, and increase or decrease accordingly the horizontal clear bass

halcyon iron
#

okay ill try that the moment i get to use these

#

thanks a lot :)

eager parrot

speaking of tax writeoffs and waste

#

corporate waste when it comes to tech is absolutely obscene

#

whenever they decomission a datacenter, they waste like millions of dollars worth of equipment and drives, shredding petabytes of drives and just giving away the rest to metal scrappers for free

#

drive security I get though

#

although in reality a lot of the tech does get "recycled" they just can't sell it

halcyon iron
#

sounds good so far! i turned up the bass a bit tho

haughty steppe

i only own one funko pop and it's the riddler one edwin gave me Wheeze

eager parrot
# halcyon iron sounds good so far! i turned up the bass a bit tho

nice, glad it is working out well. try it between the two different values for each band I wrote to tailor it more to your taste. And yeah I don't know exactly what the bass horizontal slider is doing, but I suspect it is just 200hz and below being raised, so that one's up to your taste and how well it sounds to your ears 🙂

trim flicker
#

Yeah i consider anyone on lower ranks to be victims, cults seek people when they're the most confused

#

Meaning teens and college years, and after losses

eager parrot
#

Absolutely, they recruit those who are vulnerable and impressionable.

#

Surprisingly a lot of these Korean cults have found their ways into western countries, not that we were lacking cults to start with. chuuhmm

last eagle
#

One of the KBS PD apperantly got it too

#

Like sheesh, this is mad serious

eager parrot
#

I remember reading an analysis of this, the issue with Korea is they have such a longstanding tradition of Shamanism and other kind of superstitious cults and religions, as well as Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism. Then when Christianity became very common there just in the past 100 years, a lot of these belief systems started melding together, giving rise to these new religious movements that don't neatly fit in any traditional category as sects of existing world religions.

#

This isn't necessarily uncommon elsewhere in the world either, but Korea seems particularly vulnerable to it.

last eagle
#

there's always be darker rabbit hole in every country

#

who ever knows we just in the tip of the iceberg

eager parrot
#

Yep, if you start digging into these things, it gets dark and scary quickly.

#

With no bottom to the abyss.

unborn echo
#

but yeah, the cult thing is pretty big in korea. you'll even see it in dramas, movies and even webtoons.

trim flicker
#

Plenty of dramas with cults

#

I only watched Save Me tho

eager parrot
#

I get the concern people have with that particular idol being part of a cult though, whether by choice or not.

#

Idols have a pretty darn close parasocial relationship with their fans nowadays.

#

It wouldn't be that difficult for them to subliminally affect their fans...

#

Especially the youngest and more impressionable and vulnerable among them.

pale flower
#

One of my recent psych classes had a discussion on how similar cults are to other more "accepted" systems like the military, and honestly if you think about it, being a kpop fan can sometimes result in cult-like behavior

#

So I don't blame anyone who ends up "falling for it"

#

Kinda a thin line at times between what makes a cult what it is, they can either be harmful or useful to their followers (like others mentioned, helping them with social needs/a feeling of purpose/etc)

#

I actually think that if they managed to cut ties with the cult though that's a better reason for that idol to stay in the industry

#

Because it means they're more likely to speak up on their experience and either warn/educate others

valid magnet
#

Like yeah seeing how being a kpop fan (or any kind of fandom) can lead to it (excessive love towards the artist, defending them at everything especially their crimes, attacking others etc)

hoary charm
#

blue gang is a kpop related cult please help

pale flower
#

Yeah and again, it's just part of what allows some people to fulfill their psychological/emotional/social needs

#

It's why a lot of people end up saying that stanning x group/being part of a fandom makes them feel better

#

Which again kind-of points to why one can't say that all cults/cult behavior are inherently bad
Though the worry is understandable considering how well-known bad/harmful cults are

#

(This isn't me telling peeps to go join a cult btw, I'm just saying that it might be less rare than some people might think, and some things/groups that can very much exhibit cult-like behavior are considered socially acceptable)

oak lodge
#

Reminds me of the psych studies about how gangs recruit and how the impressionable are drawn in. Quite similar in fulfilling a sense of belonging.

tbh that change is somewhat neccessary. France is in bad need of reforms in various sectors to adjust to not living in the 19th century any more

#

SHould be noted that this is still lower than pretty much everywhere else in Europe

oak lodge
#

The age of living expectancy certainly has increased by a substantial factor from when the rule was made

#

So, it's understandable

I will say additional 2 pension payments a year from what it already was sounds nice

It's a change very much explained by demographics

#

Younger generations paying the pensions of old people who retire early is just not realistically affordable any more

The whole France situation still boggles me anyway. Whole country in uproar over one way overdue change that in reality still won't be enough or even on the level of any other western country. It's not big societal issues like in Israel where they're protesting the descent into authoritarianism or BLM protests in the US or something. Protests in France should be peaceful over such trite matters and not get violent and eventually lead to the police using such (illegal) measures.

vital needle
#

Maybe some french people are just built diff and enjoy the chaos

haughty panther
#

people have the right to protest bad government when they don't represent or respect the people, and have the right to destroy government property or cause damage to private corporate property if the government doesn't listen as it sends a message of who actually run the country

eager parrot
#

I wouldn't say they have the right to destroy government property, certainly not private property, but on the other hand, a completely peaceful protest in designated places that the government approves of and gives permit for is simply too easy to file away and ignore by authorities and those in charge.

#

Protests by nature of their purpose are meant to be inconvenient and disruptive to get attention and be noticed. It doesn't have to be destructive though.

#

That's why general strikes are so effective.

#

But they're also really hard to pull off if society doesn't have strong social contracts and unity.

trim flicker
#

I'm pretty much fine with breaking government propriety if there's a good enough reason to be that pissed at the people in charge
I don't know much about the french protests, but I can understand people feeling violence is a bit of an overreaction to what they perceive to be a small change i guess

eager parrot
#

I guess it only seems that way from an outside perspective

#

since 64-68 are common retirement/pension ages basically everywhere else

#

though the French protests intensified now thanks to how the government bypassed a vote to pass this unilaterally.

#

which they see as an affront to democracy.

#

which I get, if they didn't have the votes to pass it, wtf then

#

it's a huge failure on the part of the government to not educate and inform the people of the urgency of the problem

#

but also a huge failure to not even be able to get enough support among the representatives of the people.

trim flicker

Yeah from the outside it may seem like an overreaction

I guess I can sort of see the motivation in harming large corporations so they'd put pressure on the government to fix things one way or another, since governments tend to care more about corporate interests than people's demands.

#

But still, the system is broken when protesting and rioting has become a pastime for fixing government misbehavior.

#

Like on a fundamental level, there's a disconnect.

how long are your presidential terms?

5 years

eager parrot

I mean, are the people truly willing to do what has to be done to pull a president down from barely the beginning of his second term?

lilac lodge
#

we shall see

The people elected him, a coup isn't the answer to him.

#

Much like the US had to live with Trump and Brazil had to live with Bolsanaro you'll have to deal with it.

At least the gal in Italy is just there for a bit of power and doesn't really seem to do much

eager parrot
#

and frankly, macron doesn't seem like the type to back down, he'll fulfill his 2nd term and might even run for a 3rd given his age and level of support, despite whatever current polls say in the heat of the moment about him and his policies.

#

best bet would be the level of protesting delays the law going into effect indefinitely, and maybe whatever your version of the supreme court/constitutional council is rules his method of passing this as unconstitutional or beyond the scope of the procedure he used.

lilac lodge
#

presidents can only do 2 terms here

eager parrot

I read that there's a loophole, 2 consecutive terms, but they can run again for a third after one other term passes with somebody else in charge

Digital payments are not synonimous with crypto currencies

#

Cryptobros' brains have become soup istg

eager parrot
#

digital payments aren't the issue

#

central bank digital currencies are very similar to cryptocurrencies, minted out of thin air, though they may not need to use blockchain or anything if they are state issued.

#

central banks want to create money digitally without having to print an equivalent amount of cash.

#

A few countries already have this in place.

#

China most notably.

blazing depot
#

That's not "similar to crypto" at all though, that's just how the modern banking system works literally everywhere. No one has a vault full of gold like in some fucking movie.

eager parrot
#

They still have to mint an equivalent amount of physical currency for any amount of money they loan out to banks.

vital needle
#

Yeah most money is already created digitally

eager parrot
#

And the vaults full of gold also exist.

vital needle
#

They just add zeroes to another bank's account and boom

eager parrot

That's not how it works.

blazing depot

The dumbest, really.

eager parrot

I'm not comparing it to cryptocurrency in any other sense than only in the minting/issuing procedure.

#

most money is just adding numbers to accounts

That's how it works at the consumer/commercial banking level, yes.

#

But not at the central bank level.
