I'm sure many people don't mind current heros and many of us would lime hee heros.
What about hybrid heros?
Dual typing heros that would do well with barriers to help people's rosters. Give only a toned down version of each heros class that is the hybrid.
Like a Warlock/Jarl give them a toned down version of the classes natural skills and allow a combination of skills allowed

Spellblades can do every barrier and are still a blue hero which has its limitations.
You could have heros that are only 2 types and can have different threat ratings, damage, evasion all of that

They'd be as you described, toned down versions of the original classes
