im working on a project explaining the what, how, and why of equalization. im trying to cover band types of multiband equalizers. shelves and passing filters confuse me because i see no difference between a high shelf and a low pass filter. could someone explain this in detail?

a low/high pass filter will drop volume by x db for every octave above/below the threshold

#

a shelf will adjust volume by the specified amount for all frequencies above/below threshold

maybe you are confusing high shelf with high cut. A high cut will be the same as a low pass.

Shelf is basically lowering the volume of certain frequencies. Cut is just taking them off
