cause its all basically cubes

if you can shade a rectangle you can shade anything

The critique I am gona make is heavily biased

However, usualy when you are tryna do a painting with just colors (mostly like a painting), what bring most cohesion to the piece is painting starting with a big brush

That blocks in the base values

I'd never worry about the small stuff, things like smaller lines and details, instead of doing them with a small brush, I'd paint them with a substractive method

This helps the lines feel mixed

And part of a same subject

i think the method of leaving the edge of a dark underpainting unpainted to make the lineart instead of actually doing the lines for the line art is really cool

that said i dont know if thats actually even a thing that people do nor have i tried it

well maybe not exactly lineart but i‘ve heard of this technique being used

it was especially popular when everyone only did only traditional paintings with oil paint

it actually wasn‘t intentional, most artist did this purely to save money on canvases

they basically just took their old paintings and painted new ones over them

and what you described came out as a result

i saw one guy who partially implemented this into his digital painting style

can‘t find his name for the love of it

but it came out being very vibrant with color and overall very epic

disco elysium portraits seem to kind of use the same technique
