I'll be a bit more specific...
When you shatter the glass, the object in which you used to smash the glass will depend on where the glass flies to. So if I were to throw it left, the glass will shatter and fly towards the left.
But as a downside, stepping on the glass shards will alert the AI because it makes noise
Like in the museum

They could block up the entrance afterwards as a way of cutting the player off

Glass shards alert the neighbor in the museum, why not everywhere else
It makes for an interesting and immersion downside for breaking a window
This way entering through a door isn't rendered entirely useless.
Honestly, that would be a plus
It’s a trade off
You get a new point of entry
At the cost of making the neighbors stronger by giving them new ways to spot you
And the way of cutting you off if it becomes a habit of going through it
