I think you shouldn't have to rely on having to read the books for lore. You should be able to figure it out in the games. Any normal person who just finds the apple coin for example wouldn't care since the game doesn't show what it means. Matpat even said that he didn't want to have to read the books in order to analyze the pilot for the HN cartoon pilot.
