Locked out from progressing basement

I entered the neighbors basement, went into the furnace room and saved my game. When I later reloaded my save I was a in the closet outside the furnace room and the lever to open the brick wall wouldn’t open despite me pulling the lever. I reloaded my save multiple times but it still would not let me in.
