Printed some letters from Makerworld and then made a custom MERCH sign. Amazon 5V LED strips and each letter has a 3 pin in and out plug. Wired up to an Amazon controller running WLED. Came out great.

That’s pretty sick! I also admire you dedication to put in the effort to solder a single pixel, like the end of the “E”
Thanks. I really didn’t want to, but it really looked shitty without it. The letters I used are “deep enough” to diffuse fine, but not so deep that you can get away with fewer LEDs. But the font was decent and they printed easily and don’t take TOO long, so I can’t complain.
Oh, and I learned some stuff doing these. I used solid core wire so I could bend them and know they weren’t going to get in the way of stuff, but honestly I think that is actually a lot more tedious than just using stranded wire and then use a hot-glue gun and tack them down in a few places so they can’t shadow the LEDs. I think the building would just go a good bit faster that way.
cool nice job ^^
just asking did you know there are sideway led strips which you can turn and bend allot easier in these angles ?
I need to try some of those. I have a bunch of these still laying around, but will look into those.
cool it saves a but of soldering as you can bend the corners
i made some small holder bits in my cad design so slighty more design intensive
These letters aren’t very big and I’m not sure they bend quite enough to get into places like the middle of the E.
Oh, I see what you mean. Use them where you CAN get the bend, but solder where you can’t
i have done smaller letters and you can bend them pretty far
try to turn them on and see how far you can bend them 🙂
I’ll get some. Basically the “COB” ones, right?
these are the ones i use
the I O is a very early protoype that came loose from the small socket holders i made
but the effect with side ways leds white pla 2 layers
the cob ones might be actual harder to bend not sure i dont have those
Oh, so you stick those to the wall?
oh no there magnetic and i can make words with them
Hahaha, sorry, no I meant you stick the LED strips to the “wall” of the thing you’re lighting up instead of to the base.
yeah works to
i dont have full trust in the stickynes of the strips them self 🙂
I really like the seed pixels for this sort of thing because you can just bend them anywhere you want and use hot glue to stick them down. Eliminates the need to solder and plenty bright for most applications
Addition! $8.50 arrow from Amazon: https://amzn.to/4cVYZoH and just gutted its stuff and put 5mm F5 ws2812b LEDs in it. Now just need to sit down and figure out better animation. It’s just tacked onto the end of the MERCH string.
Did a custom ledmap.json file to make the arrowhead pop together. Very happy with this.
