Sometimes you only have a limited amount of time to play a game of Risk. Let’s say 45 minutes. The problem is that you never know in advance how long a game will actually take. So if it runs longer, you either have to quit when the 45 minutes are up, or you decide not to start the game at all.
What if there was a gameplay mode where you set the total game duration upfront? Every player knows this time limit, and you can see the timer counting down during the game. When the set time runs out and the game hasn’t finished yet, the winner is simply the player who controls the most territories at that moment.
This would add an extra strategic element, especially towards the end of the game. When time is almost up, it becomes crucial to hold as many territories as possible. Of course, the last player in turn order might still try to grab a few territories at the last second, but that’s something you’d need to anticipate earlier by defending key areas or even trying to eliminate a player before the timer runs out.
I think this kind of gameplay could prevent players from quitting mid-game just because they run out of time. On top of that, it would introduce a different and interesting dynamic, knowing that the game must be decided within a fixed time window.
