-# I try not to suggest anything that would require a major overhaul under the hood of how the game works. However, the following idea might require such a rework. Yet, I will still suggest it as it is a base to further ideas.

Leave a Troop Behind ON/OFF
This is a modifier option to toggle the requirement of leaving a troop on previous territory.

This would make it possible for a territory to have no troops.

This may be a controversial change to what has been a core element of Risk for so many years. I do believe it would be interesting to see how this may change and enhance the gameplay of Risk. This could open up new strategies and enhance existing ones.

Would zero-troop territories be neutral?
Are dice even rolled on a no-troop territory?
How do bots or zombies interact with them?

What are your thoughts?

That's an interesting idea. There are two possibilities for this to work:

  1. Zero-troop territories would become neutral (a neutral bot territory with "1" on it basically).
  2. Zero-troop territories would stay with the same player, but become defenseless, meaning anyone can take it for free. Let me also suggest that you should only be able to leave territories defenseless when they share at least 1 border with another player. Otherwise this could become way overpowered.

My thinking is a zero-troop territory would be both neutral and undefendable (dice would not be rolled). No player occupies one of these territories beyond the attack phase and they don't contribute to anyone's territory count. Capital territories, being the only exception, would continue to not be able to have a zero-troop value.

Players could move more troops across the board while however sacrificing being able to retreat or fortify back. Fog of war would even further be used to hide a players movement, as these territories would effectively disappear after each turn.

On its face it is really just a simplification of existing gameplay and removes some of the luck factor.

Where it really gets cool is in the difference of how bots and zombies could react to zero-troop territories. Bots could take them while zombies avoid them. This would open up some interesting new strategy with zombies.

How could this idea mesh with new risk game modes that haven't been thought of yet?

As just an option to play around with I don't see a problem with it beside the obvious development work to make it possible. However, I do see why it might not be a popular idea. I will soon officially submit it as I currently have it, unless I get more input from the community.

I guess I won't be shocked if it gets any more no votes.

For capitals they could simply be grey or even ghostly (partially transparent)

I’ll leave zero troops on my territories when I’m dead!

How would this affect cardblocks? If you can leave 0 troops and take that same card next turn it might lead to huge stalemates.

Would I be able to turn any 1 stack into a 0 stack in my fortify phase? If so can I do this to get infinite cap cards?

Easy solution. You only get a card for attacking a territory, not just taking a zero.

But If that wasn’t the case and you could attack and then fortify out of the same territory over and over again on turn after turn (in a prog caps game for example) then most high level Grandmasters would know what to do || Go and do something else I’d imagine, but I’m not a high level grandmaster so I don’t know for sure.||

But many master level players would be stuck in a forever stalemate. Eventually you might bait them into a self destruction or rage quit simply by repeating the same move over and over again. Since this is a family friendly game I don’t think SMG wants to encourage || master baiting || so they would probably go with the option of cards only for attacking and taking enemy territories and no card for only taking an unoccupied territory.
